We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Hello all,
I got a 50% extra Avios offer from BA today, perfect timing to top up my account before booking flights to BGI. Bought 100,000 plus 50,000 free. Got a confirmation email, then one minute later a confirmation of a refined of the points that I didn’t request. Even stranger, my BA account shows one 100k and two lots of 50k added, then one 100k and 50k removed, meaning I have 50k Avios for free! Should I buy again and hope for the best? Is this a common problem?

    • Rob says:

Wouldn’t try again – if it is anything more than a one off they will spot it.

Anyone stayed at the Domes of Corfu – considering this for a Sept stay? Thank you

    • Anuj says:

I’ve stayed in domes miramare (also in corfu) and it was excellent, I want in October and it was still just about warm enough to have a swim in the sea.

      • njb says:

Thank you – the domes of corfu has just opened and is not as expensive- but has some questionable reviews – so I am hesitant

  • Luke says:

Does anyone know if the £50 off £500 spend at Apple on the AMEX card offers includes gift cards?

Offer expires at the end of August but want to buy a £500 gift card to spend next month.

    • Benilyn says:

Should work. A non-guaranteed way to sense check is try buy a normal product (e.g. iMac) and see if you can add a gift card to the same basket – I tested this and you can. And so likely it is processed the same way, as opposed to some website’s not letting you do this, and gift cards are processed by a third party. As I said, a non-guaranteed way to check

    • Sarah says:

Yes, I did this and the £50 was credited very swiftly to my Amex card

    • Ali M says:

      yes got it (got online)

  • Alan says:

I have just received an email warning me that my Hilton points will expire at the end of the year, as I doubt I will be traveling before that what’s the easiest way of extending them.

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

If you google “headforpoints how to stop my hilton points expiring”….

      https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2019/05/13/when-do-hilton-honors-points-expire/

      • Alan says:

        Thanks, very useful.

Now I just got to decide if its worth buying more with the 100% bonus. Has anyone got suggestions for great value redemptions in Europe that would make it worthwhile.

        • Harrier25 says:

If you have accumulated MR points via an Amex card just use the minimum amount, 200 points, to purchase 400 Hilton Honors points. That should stop them expiring.

        • Harry T says:

Waldorf Astoria in Amsterdam has an excellent reputation – apparently it used to be hard to book five nights there on points but I managed it for this August and then booked next Easter without any issues.

          • Harry T says:

The cash rates there are absolutely bananas, so it’s a great use of points on paper (95,000 a night, less with five for four)

          • Memesweeper says:

The Hilton in Amsterdam is Player Twos favourite ever redemption. Understated class that hotel.

        • The Savage Squirrel says:

“Has anyone got suggestions for great value redemptions in Europe that would make it worthwhile.”

That’s backwards. Where do you want to go? Now see whether points, or even buying points, is a good option to get you there.

  • @mkcol says:

Other than the Apex Grassmarket in Edinburgh, are there any other hotel/serviced apartments fairly central in Edinburgh which have a swimming pool for use by guests you can recommend?

Doesn’t have to be member of any points schemes as it’s for my brother & family from Oslo who aren’t bothered by that aspect.

    Thanks 🙂

Sheraton Grand and Caledonian/ Waldorf Astoria both have pools. Sheraton Grand has the better pool by far, WA nicer hotel as long as you avoid basic rooms – but it can be far more expensive in which case would recommend the Sheraton.

Kimpton also has a pool but never used that.

    • Harry T says:

The Sheraton Grand has a very good pool plus other water based spa facilities. I’m informed they have just reopened after a fire caused some issues.

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

Radisson Blu Edinburgh City Centre is right on the royal mile and has a child-friendly pool.

  • Peggerz says:

The MacDonald Holyrood has a pool and is 1 min from Scottish Parliament, 2 mins from Holyrood Palace and the Royal Mile at the bottom end. It is also on the doorstep of the Queen’s Park – inactive volcano in the city centre. Novotel and Radisson Blu have pools as well as the Apex Waterloo. After that, try the WA Caledonian or Rocco Forte’s Balmoral, And I think the Scotsman hotel still has its all metal pool. Kimpton in Charlotte Sq has nice spa and pool too. Not sure if the Sheraton Grand’s pool is open – there was a fire a while ago.
Lots to try centrally in Edinburgh.

Any news if Virgin are extending status by a further 6 months. Looks like my US trip will be cancelled so will lose my silver status at the end of September.

  • Ukgeorge says:

Sorry, I mistakenly posted this on yesterday’s forum a little earlier.

I am struggling to understand the entrance requirements for flying to Hungary. This is a leisure trip not business.

The U.K. gov website foreign travel advise entry requirements for Hungary

Implies you can enter with a negative PCR test.

But the Hungarian border force police website, which various other sites recommend seems very ambiguous and says you can enter with a negative PCR test or a EU digital Covid certificate, I presume the nhs app does not count. But then also states foreign citizens… shall not enter Hungary.

    http://www.police.hu/en/content/information-on-general-rules-of-border-crossing

Anyone have any recent experience? Thanks
