Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I blame Mr. Cunningham. And not from Happy Days.

  • Blair says:

Amex saved offers still missing for me. Thought an overnight cycle might bring them back. I had screenshotted all the now missing hotel ones ending 31/08 and will cancel upcoming stays if not honoured by Amex. Might also call up to give out as taking offers already saved devalues the Plat proposition even further. JDB may have views of course; were the offers simply an invitation to treat, etc.

  • David Laurence says:

My Hilton and Hyatt are back

    • John says:

Thanks for this, just checked and my unused one is back too.

I spent £50 on average food at a Hilton 2 days ago expecting it to be free (as I was happy with the room rates without any discount) so was mildly worried…

But I wouldn’t even have noticed the offers had temporarily disappeared if not for people posting about calling Amex for every little thing

      • FFoxSake says:

My (already used) Hilton offer is back under saved offers… if it triggers again after a further stay that would be nice 🙂

  • Sandgrounder says:

My Plat referral bonus has a new promo rate valid until 2 Nov, 24k/65k.

    • VerdantBacon says:

It looks like the 70k plat offer that was given to a limited number of card holders was replaced by 65k offer for all plat holders and has an actual end date.

A few friends who have plats didn’t have the 70k but they all seem to have the 65k one now.

Similar to the offer before the 70k, limited to a few card holders and then given to all card holders

      • TGLoyalty says:

Yep it’s not only 5k less points but £2k more spend (granted in a little more time)

        Ends Nov 2nd

    • IanM says:

I also have the 24k referral bonus, no sign of any 70/65k ??

In terms of hitting the 90k limit, is it possible to see what you have had so far and is it by calendar year or membership year??

      Thanks

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Gold offer has now disappeared, oh well

    • Pid says:

Just a shame I only have 8000MR of referrals left this year on my account. 🙁

      • VerdantBacon says:

Yep it’s a shame they didn’t increase the limit, both my wife and I hit 90k a few months ago and still have a bit of churning to do this year!

        • Reney says:

is the 90k limit per person or per card, i.e if someone has a BAPP and a plat, can they max out 90k plat referral and then refer from BAPP?

          • Rob says:

Per currency, so you can do 90k MR across Gold and Plat (if you have both) plus 90k Avios and 90k Marriott.

  • Blindman says:

    Amex Bonvoy
Anyone had the Referal Link “temporaily” unavailable ?
    Cannot refer anyone at present!
Chat were useless as per usual to find out why

This is a new account (less than 30 days)

Spend is only 20% of limit.

  • Anna says:

Filled in our PLFs last night – a couple of observations. I included our teenage son and nephew on my OH’s form and it didn’t ask for their Day 2 test codes, hopefully this is not going to cause an issue at the airport?! So in theory we didn’t even need to buy tests for them.
Also, my nephew doesn’t live with us but only our address had to be entered on the form so I’m not sure how they think they’d track him down if they had to contact him for test & trace.

    • Andrew says:

Should probably be a different PLF for each household.

      • Anna says:

Can lone children have their own though? It was very vague and let you fill in any connection to the child. No questions about whether they live with you, only if they’re travelling with you.

        • Lady London says:

you are your nephew’s guardian for the trip so that means if ok for your son should work same to include nephew.

    • Peter says:

They no longer check them on arrival. Just at check in/boarding.

      • Anna says:

Hence my concern about the airport!

        • TGLoyalty says:

They just check you have a plf and the name on it.

          • Anna says:

Well now I’m wondering whether to even bother doing son’s day 2 test and see what happens?! Are they able to be “re-purposed”?!

    • ankomonkey says:

Have been overseas with my kids twice this year. At Porto Airport they asked to see all names on my PLF (to ensure all travellers were accounted for). I had also noticed that they never ask for Day 2 test references for kids. Last year when I got called by Test & Trace to see if I was isolating after a trip, they only mentioned me, despite OH and kids also travelling. Kids were on my PLF for that trip too under my phone number.

  • Alan S says:

Found myself sorely tempted to use the Amex/PaW double dip on Montblanc yesterday. Equals as much as 45% back.

Question is, can I justify spending £500 on a pen…

    • Pid says:

      No!

    • Andrew says:

      Yes

    • VerdantBacon says:

      Absolutely you can

    • Andrew says:

      They are rather nice pens.

I got mine a few years back on an “intern rate” from an airline mileage scheme. They were out of stock and when you clicked through were coded as a negative redemption rate. I chucked a couple in my basket, bought a few other bits, and forgot about them.

About six weeks later a pair of MontBlanc pens were delivered by DHL and my mileage account was credited…

    • HAK says:

Well, I would sell this to myself as an attempt to maintain civilized standards!

    • Rochelle says:

What is PaW? Considering buying a pen myself.

      • Rob says:

Perks At Work. If you don’t know, you don’t get it!

        • Andrew says:

Even if you have it, you might not get it!

I’ve got two different log-ins. One for my employer of more than a decade ago, and one for my current employer.

The one for my old employer (Banking) has a significantly broader range of offers and far better returns than my current generic NHS. For example my Banking one has Corporate Travel offers, the Mont Blanc offer and a Dell offer – the NHS one doesn’t.

    • The cyclist says:

There plenty of our Mont Blanc branded items that you can pick up, I got a leather pouch back in the day for an iphone SE, now that I have upgraded my phone ,I split the side of the soft leather and it doubles up very nicely as some extra padding in my cricket box.

  • J says:

Posted this yesterday but didn’t get a response so I’ll try again!

Anyone know a quick way to use billhop to hit the welcome bonus? Ideally I can use it to deposit into an account that I can instantly withdraw from? Just not sure which apps/investment sites allow for deposits via billhop.

    Thanks
