We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Looking to stay a couple of nights at Hampton by Hilton Waterloo. The hotel main page says free breakfast but the Flex/Semi-Flex rate I’m looking to book says Room Only on it (there is a slightly higher rate Family Rate that does say free breakfast). Can anyone confirm that this (or other Hamptons) offer free breakfast on the Flexible or Semi-Flex rates? Cheers

    • Rob says:

      Free breakfast for all

      • Oh! Matron! says:

However, was there last week: The breakfast currently isn’t great. It’s a VERY limited buffet that’s behind glass so you have to get a member of staff to give you stuff.

Looking to draw on the great wisdom of the HFP community…..
Any recommendations for all-inclusive resorts in Jamaica? Hilton & Marriott look to have strong options but not wedded to going with a big chain.
Also, any recent experiences travelling there ie during Covid (we will be 2 fully vaxxed adults plus 15yo) – on paper it seems relatively easy, unlike say Barbados which requires 5 days of quarantine.
    TIA

    • Simon Robinson says:

Barbados- If your fully vaxxed you only need to stay in quarantine at your hotel/ villa until the result of your second test which is taken at the airport on arrival- results back within 12 hours.

      • Degsy says:

Thanks. Yes it’s not us, it’s our (un-vaxxed) 15 yr old that’s the problem – she needs to quarantine in an approved hotel for 5 days and because we would be with her, so would we. Unless I’ve mis-read/misunderstood the requirements.

    • Mrs_Fussy says:

Royalton Negril – taken over by Marriott. Hilton Rose hall and a few others too – all in Jamaica

  • JSemity says:

any updates on cash advance charges with beardy?

    • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

Test transaction of £50 on Aug 6 did NOT have any cash adv fee associated with it – going bigger today so wish me luck 😉

      • Degsy says:

        God speed GG 🤞🏽

      • Yorkie Aid says:

        Good luck!

      • JSemity says:

excellent! Thanks. I’ll do a bigger spend today

      • Chas says:

I’m still very nervous that any interest / cash advance fees will only be applied when the statement is created, so won’t be testing mine out until the very beginning of next month. Good luck with your stage 2 test!

    • Andrew says:

It’s not a game I play, but there daily planned outages of Clydesdale’s systems at the moment.

I suspect that the dates in the T&Cs relate to the earliest dates that they planned to commence their sytem updates, but actual charging might take a little longer. Whether or not they catch up and backdate to the T&C date is a different matter.

They do seem to be having problems though, with the actual outage extending well beyond the published plans.

      • Anon says:

Given it took them 9 years to follow up on the fact I kept a staff bank account after I left then I don’t think we’ll have problems any time soon.

Clydesdale have always been bad at technology and probably always will be as they pay lower than industry average so struggle to get really good technology staff.

Question about the Hyatt offer 250 spend/100 back. I had them saved on many of my cards, but they all disappeared. I thought the offer was until 31st August. But this morning at checkout, I checked the saved offers and none had it listed.

Anyone has it on their cards or remember the date of offer expiry ?

  • Terry S says:

BA Amex & Pref Rewards Gold: Hi. My wife waited 2 years with no personal Amex cards then I referred her for BAPP, she then refers me for Preferred Rewards Gold & I then refer her for Preferred Rewards Gold etc etc.
We’ve done all the required spending but yesterday Amex stated she is not eligible for the Pref Rewards Gold bonus (enhanced 32000 May offer) because she holds a personal Amex card ie her new BAPP. Thought Avios & memb rewards were treated separately as per Rob’s article?

‘The key to this is that the British Airways American Express Premium Plus card and The Platinum Card have different bonus rules from the other cards. You are only blocked from a bonus if you have held another card in the same ‘reward family’ over the previous two years’

    • Thom says:

She needed to take out the gold card first and then the BAPP …

      • TGLoyalty says:

No she needed to take out the Bonvoy then the BAPP/Plat or vice versa.

Gold/nectar/free ba/Bonvoy are all considered personal Amex’s that mean you won’t get a bonus. And now you have an MR card you can’t get the Plat bonus.

Expensive mistake after 2 year fallow period.

        • Terry S says:

Ok thanks that clears it up. Personally not fussed about Platinum as we have HSBC World Elite too.

    • Genghis says:

No bonus. You’re quoting Plat and BAPP rules there, not PRG. Unlucky.

      • Terry S says:

Is that not just an example in Rob’s article as Plat and Pref Gold are both memberships rewards? Thanks

        • SteveKicks says:

No it’s only the platinum card, not any of the other membership rewards cards unfortunately

          • Terry S says:

Ah ok thanks SteveKicks. Just seen that myself in the eligibility criteria on those cards.

    • AJA says:

Unlucky. Holding the BAPP stops any bonuses on any other Amex card other than Platinum. That’s the problem I have being a BAPP holder since 2007. Totally ineligible for any sign up bonuses on everything else other than Platinum. Talk about not rewarding long-standing customers. I only discovered this website about 3 years ago and by the time I understood what I’d been missing out on Amex had tightened the rules.

      • Terry S says:

Thanks AJA. I’m not interested in Platinum due to the other cards we have. Would have been useful if Rob’s article mentioned the eligibility differences for the MR cards.

    • BuildBackBetter says:

The rules changed again a year ago.

  • Andy D says:

I had a paper copy of (Amex) Departures arrive this morning. I thought it had gone online only? Happy to see it.

  • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

Datapoint – Marriott credit card points posted today but NOT the triple point bonus from the June / July promotion…

  • Blenz101 says:

Quarantine hotel rules face legal challenge

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-58180307

I really hope this is successful and if so I hope those who paid are able to recover the cost of their HMP Mecure stay back as well as compensation.

    • Yorkie Aid says:

Yes, that would really be an excellent use of taxpayers money. Good grief.

      • Blenz101 says:

Well it will be a helpful reminder to this government to comply with the law and that imprisoning citizens at their own expense should be proportional to the risk they pose.

        • Yorkie Aid says:

Whatever they do will be wrong. They are criticised for not going far enough and then for going too far. Are they incompetent? Sure. Would I rather have them in charge than the alternative? Absolutely.

          • Pete M says:

I think this paragraph is really telling: “The other European countries with mandatory quarantine involving hotel detentions – Ireland and Norway – have amended their schemes so fully vaccinated travellers are exempt from needing to quarantine.”

          • Save East Coast Rewards says:

Definitely better having someone in charge that gives out dodgy PPE and track and trace contracts than someone who cares for the NHS and wanted to see those on the frontline get better terms and conditions

    • Yorkie Aid says:

What that tells me Pete is that if you ask five epidemiologists the same question you’ll get five different answers

    • Lord Doncaster says:

      Errrr no.

If some families couldn’t resist jetting off on jollies to red list countries then I have no sympathy. If it was for an essential reason like a funeral then I may feel differently (but even then we had restricted funerals)

      • Blenz101 says:

Don’t be so ridiculous. Nobody went off on holiday to a red list country. As the article points out those suffering are Brits living abroad (as 5.5.m do) who have had to travel back at short notice for emergency / unavoidable reasons. Anybody with time was always able to avoid paying for UK hotel quarantine by staying in an amber/green country first. This isn’t an option when returning to see dying relatives, attend a funeral or any other time sensitive emergency.

        • Yorkie Aid says:

So as long as they are coming back for an “emergency” it’s fine to bring in a potentially unknown variant?

          • Blenz101 says:

There is zero correlation between where a variant may occur and which traffic light colour the UK applies. Is it proportionate to make somebody coming back to attend a funeral for perhaps two days pay for £2285 of hotel room rooms and Covid tests they will never take?
