We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Just got my flights to US cancelled. I plan to ask for a refund which includes 2-4-1 expecting Jan 2022. Any chance I can call and ask BA to swap the voucher in my other booking for Dec 2021 where voucher used has a longer validity?

  • Yorkshire Rich says:

Just had one night at the Hilton curio Cambridge. Was pretty good and was located around 10/15 minutes through a park to the bars/restaurants.
We had a one bedroom apartment with cooking facilities and a dishwasher. The kitchen diner area was quite plush with one nice TV in there and then a nice TV in the bedroom.
There were plenty of families staying and pool wasn’t really suitable for actually swimming, but also had a sauna and steam room.
The bar area was quirky with a pool table and some games on the tables.

    I Would recommend

Booked reward nights for the first time with the 5 for 4 with Hilton Gold, staying at Hilton Malta. Any experience on how they tend to treat reward nights with benefits? I.e. less favourably as not paying? Any tips on increasing chances on upgrade to executive room level?? Thanks all!

    • Harry T says:

They shouldn’t treat you any differently but could potentially do so. Hilton Gold members aren’t eligible for lounge access if upgraded to executive rooms.

      • Pid says:

I thought they were only entitled to lounge access if upgraded to an executive room. At least I have on many occasions.

        • Yorkie Aid says:

The last time I stayed at Hilton Gatwick we were upgraded to Exec room with lounge access and I was only Silver at the time. Obviously very lucky then.

      • Ros says:

Yes I thought you get lounge access if upgraded to executive level room??

      • Chris Heyes says:

Harry T sorry to pull you up with your extensive knowledge
But O Yes they are I’m Hilton Gold (never been higher)
We three Are always up-graded to Executive Room or Suite
and without fail given Executive Lounge access
In all the years we have booked Hilton (and it’s a lot of years)
whether a day or a week We get up-graded usually to a Suite although occasionally an Executive Room
Never not been unless none at Hotel !

        • Ros says:

@Chris Heyes, wow! What is your secret?? I’m really hoping we’d get lucky, may consider paying a supplement for upgrade if reasonable. I did email to enquire but there was a blunt, it will only be offered depending on availability on arrival! Which doesn’t give much hope

          • Chris Heyes says:

Ros It’s not really a secret I’m Gold, Partners Gold her Brother isn’t
The 3 of us go on Holiday together have done for years
We always go when it’s off-peak
Most if not all Hiltons only have a couple of 3 bedded rooms
We always without fail book the 3 bedded room just below a Suite
Because most Hiltons like to save their short supply of 3 bedded rooms for Family rooms
I Purposely look for the 3 bedded room below a Suite booking BnB if necessary even though we’d get it free anyhow
Depending which Hilton we are staying at I could tell you the room they are going to give us lol Hilton Gatwick Junior Suite, Athens 3rd floor or above Executive Suite, Sorrento 3rd or 4th corner Suite
Funnily enough even at Sofitel Heathrow We book a three bedded room and before we arrive are e-mailed we have been moved to the Junior Suite
What is amazing about that is we are only Classic with Accor
I Think nearly every Hotel must have a shortage of 3 bedded rooms
or want them for Family Rooms ?
            OR I have a secret even I don’t know lol ?

          • John says:

Being a repeat guest of many years is the main factor in upgrades

        • Harry T says:

I bow to the wisdom of the Hilton veterans – apologies for the misunderstanding on my part.

          • Lady London says:

You’re obviously spending far too much time in nicer Marriotts Harry T 🙂

  • ChrisC says:

    Quick Q re BA e-vouchers

Have a flight booked using the TEAMGB1 voucher.

If I claim an FTV for it do they give me the value of the gross or net cost of the original booking? Recall something in the T&Cs about vouchers but can’t remember the specifics

  • GoodExperience says:

Can anyone tell me their recent experience, regarding Covid requirements on travelling from the Uk to the Netherlands and back to london. I’ve spent the last hour reading online, but frankly it’s seems like a nightmare. Seems like we need a PCR Covid test before leaving as the Uk is considered very high risk without a variant and another PCR no more than 3 days-before returning and then a Day 2 test upon return. We are double vaccinated. Seems like a whole lot of complexity and expense for a 4 day trip. Any thoughts appreciated regarding where to get PCR done, if we do proceed.

    • Dayle says:

      That would be correct

Without vax you would need another one day 8…

    • LS says:

Mostly correct (and no problems if you do do what you’ve said). The test within 3 days of returning to UK can be a lateral flow, bought In the UK prior to leaving. This is better than PCR as it is quicker, cheaper, and allows you to, erm, self-manage the situation if you are positive.

    • Harry T says:

You do not need a covid test to enter the Netherlands from the UK, if you’re fully vaccinated, as of August 8th. Check the FCDO page for an explanation of the recent changes. For returning to the UK, you require a predeparture test (rapid antigen) and a day 2 test after you arrive (PCR), as it’s an Amber list country and you are fully vaccinated.

    • charlie says:

Regardless of testing requirements prior to flight out and back, you are subject to self-quarantine unless you fall under an exemption https://www.government.nl/topics/coronavirus-covid-19/visiting-the-netherlands-from-abroad/self-quarantine/exceptions-mandatory-quarantine

      • GoodExperience says:

Charlie, I can obtain an exemption for self-quarantine due to visiting family. Harry T, are you sure as from what I read, the uk is classified as a very high risk country outside the EU, therefore requiring a negative Covid test prior to entry. Thanks LS, I will check that out.

  • Craig says:

Hoping someone can help, what are the rules if someone flies into the UK in the morning and back out the same afternoon? Obviously the fit to fly would work for both flights but what about day 2?

    • Craig says:

Also, would a fit to fly taken in France be good for both flights?

    • Stephen says:

You fill in Passenger Locator Form and there is an option for transit exemption. You need a test within 3 days prior to arrival in UK (even if transiting), but no need for Day 2/8 tests. I used my test for arrival into UK for entry into Croatia too

  • Simon says:

Hi has anyone been using HSBC PWE and Curve metal with HMRC recently and getting points or is this one over?

    • Nigel W says:

Seems like it is over from my own and several other’s experience.

  • Allan says:

Any experience of whether Windows at Galvin at Hilton Park lane will trigger the Amex £50 off £200?
