Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

A quick question about changing a BA avios booking through MMB on ba.com. If the booking is LHR-EDI, does ba.com show alternatives to choose that also include LCY-EDI if available, or does it restrict the iotions to just LHR flights? TIA.

Has anyone managed to test the new virgin T&Cs with Curve yet? My statement isnt due until the end of the month, otherwise i’d try it myself!

  • Save East Coast Rewards says:

I saw the lounge was missing on the description of the hotel so I asked them a few months ago about it. The lounge is indeed closed now and the space is used for something else, it’s not a COVID casualty as they had planned to close it in 2020

The lounge was surprisingly good when I had to stay there a few times in 2019, a good selection of hot food rather than just things like chicken wings.

  • Jonathan says:

My understanding is you need to turn them into vouchers by today by either printing them at till or converting through App. Once you’ve converted you have 56 weeks to use.

    • CH says:

Thanks. Yes, mine too. But only after I “requested” the vouchers (in the app) did I then realise my settings were to print at till (and wished I’d thought to check/change it to ‘load to card’ before pressing the “request” button!), so now wondering if I need to do a special journey today to collect the vouchers.

    *Honestly have searched*

Do we know if we have to pay for a departure test for an Amber country? Or would an NHS Lat Flow count? Looking online it does say that rapid antigen tests are taken…?!

    • Rhys says:

      No, NHS tests don’t count.

Do you mean departure FROM amber to UK or from the UK to amber country? The latter will depend on their local requirements.

      • Nick says:

NHS tests totally count for departure from the UK for some countries. The rules on ‘UK departure’ tests comes entirely from your destination, as they’re really ‘pre-arrival’ tests!

Of course, some (like Portugal) specifically ban them, but the rumours that every country needs a PDF certificate or a signature or a stamp or a passport number is not true. I’ve travelled plenty of times with just my NHS SMS result.

    • Blenz101 says:

The .gov website is pretty clear for almost all scenarios and you should be able to easily work out what you need. Good to become familiar with it as things may change between any answer worked out for you here and the rules in place when you actually travel.

  • Reney says:

For your 6 selected retailers it is 1%. Curve reward is varying rates.

  • Ryan says:

Cheers Rob, I was questioning the latter – The amber country website states:

a negative Rapid Antigen Test taken no more than 72 hours before entry; or a negative PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before entry

So a Lat Flow must be “verified” to count…?

    • Rhys says:

Yes, you will need a certificate to prove which NHS won’t give you. Plenty of other providers such as Randox, ExpressTest etc will.

    • Ryan says:

      *Rhys… definitely didn’t misread your name….

  • Oh! Matron! says:

    Marriott / United.

Just got my email saying, “Matron, as a Marriott Bonvoy® Gold Elite member, you can enjoy elevated benefits with United MileagePlus®.” Yay!

But this is Titanium only, right? Does Cruz do Marriott’s IT too?

    • YC says:

Yes United silver is only for titanium. All members get 10% additional points when converting from bonvoy to mileage – which is possibly the benefit they were highlighting

      • Maciek says:

Certainly not only Titanium. I’m Platinum and have received UA Silver upgrade.
