The HfP chat thread – Monday 9th August

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Peter says:

Can you open your own Covid test centre for pre-return rapid tests? I don’t seem to find any information about what the requirement is for a pre-departure test to be valid in the UK other than how specific the test needs to be.

    • John says:

I guess so because the test centre could be anywhere in the world

    • Blair says:

The requirement is around the quality of the test itself, in the sealed box, not the test centre. The EU has issued a loooong list of specific manufacturer tests that are acceptable. The UK just mentions the quality required. The test ’centre’ could be a one man band in effect so long as he uses quality tests.

Think that, that ship has long sailed. IMHO the only thing that will change is the price, and that will be downwards now that the press are biting at the profits made.

  • Scott says:

Just got an email from IHG.

Welcome to your next exclusive offer. Register now and stay two nights between 19 August and 30 September 2021 to earn 3,000 points. Stay two more nights by 30 September 2021 and earn an additional 3,000 points totaling 6,000 points in just four nights!*

Not sure if this can be 4 x 1 night stays, or 2 x 2 night stays. 3000 points for 2 nights, and 3000 more for another 2 nights.

    • Blair says:

Seems to apply to all existing bookings and any rates. Not linked to specific summer rates. It won’t change my behaviour for 3000 but I’ll not say no when they flow to me in a fortnight.

    • Sandra says:

T &Cs say a qualifying stay is a minimum of 1 night booked under a qualifying rate (USD 30 or local equivalent spend) so I take that as meaning 4 x 1 night stays will trigger the two awards if you want to do it that way

  • BuildBackBetter says:

NHS Covid pass can now be added to Apple wallet.

    • Blair says:

The next iteration due in autumn will automatically take 3% extra per Apple Pay transaction to start Building Back Better.

    • Bigmaggot says:

It’s only for domestic and not for travel for me?

      • HBommie says:

I have x2 QR’s on travel and one QR for domestic. Is this the reason?

  • Lady London says:

There should be. but smartly, they’ll make the change for new contracts now and others at contract rollover.

Note that as with BA, Vodafone is about corporate customers and corporate customers will keep excellent deals including roaming. Just like BA hands corporates free seat selection from time of booking in all classes.

Vodafone is not really a network if you’re not a corporate customer sooner or later they will turn on you.
