The HfP chat thread – Thursday 5th August

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Today is the 1st day of the changed cash advance rules for the VS cards isn’t it?
Be interesting to try a test later.

    • Alex says:

It is yes, we will have to see what impact it has. If any.

    • Sprout says:

I’ve made a test transaction which went thru’ OK – I’m not sure when any fees / interest might show up. I guess it might not be until the next statement?

      • Alex says:

Same situation here. Done a number of different test amounts on various routes. Will have to see what happens, my guess would be nothing. Just because T&C’s have changed, doesn’t mean their IT has been updated in any way

        • Reney says:

Love some data points when you have them. The problem with IT being behind T&C is that we won’t know when it will catch up. It could catch up tomorrow, in a week or in a year. You can’t take any comfort in whether it comes or not, and may one day do an unusually large transaction and get charged.

I’ve not been able to use Beardy behind Curve for Gov Services MCC since 1st August. Was fine on 30th & 31st July & fine with Apple Pay & other online transactions since

Did anyone take advantage of the IHG ‘Sign up, stay twice, get a free night’ offer, and has successfully received the free night cert? I completed my second stay 3 weeks ago now and no sign of voucher yet. I know the terms say 2-6 weeks to receive the voucher but just curious to know if it really takes that long in practice.

    • Colin MacKinnon says:

Yes, both of us have the voucher – shows up on our phone app as “2 free nights”, and then when you click one is the credit card free night and the other is the Stay Twice one.

      • s says:

How do you end up with a credit card night cert and a new member cert? Surely to haven’t the credit card cert, you’d have been an IHG member for at least 12 months to have hit your Creation card anniversary, and therefore not eligible for the new member free night cert offer?

        • Colin MacKinnon says:

Not the new member night – it’s the Stay Two and get one free night.

    • TJ says:

My wife signed up and received the free night within a week after completing the 2nd stay.

      • s says:

could you see that you had enrolled to the offer in the ‘Offers’ tab of the app? I did sign up using the link for the offer but I don’t see the offer in my offers tab

    • Zara says:

I (spire) had to call up and they uploaded it on to mine during the call. For my husband (basic club) they wouldn’t do it and he has to wait 4-6 weeks. I’m already using mine next week.

  • Alex says:

Seen that BA have extended their book with confidence policy, @Rob – does this mean we should hold hope for a 241 extension again, Any whispers coming your way…?

  • JohnT says:

Any suggestions for Chester stays? See there is Moxy Indigo and CPlaza?

    • Ste C says:

There is a Doubletree a couple miles out, stayed there a few times now and really like it. depending on your fitness levels it is very walkable into Chester.

    • Mattb says:

I like the Doubletree but it’s not that close to the centre. The abode overlooking the racecourse is in a nice spot but haven’t stayed there for a while as it was always suspiciously a couple of £ over my company limit!

    • Dave says:

Indigo-if you seeking a chain hotel

    • DarrenS says:

We stayed at the Indigo a couple of weeks ago. Great place.

    Advice on booking a cruise:

Looking at a Windstar cruise in Polynesia next summer. How do I protect myself from cruise line going bust? (My thoughts are that we’ll either be back to normal next summer, or many tourism companies will go under).

I know Trailfinders segregate client funds, but they don’t do Windstar.

Or do I just go with the cheapest agent, and trust Amex or whoever to help out if the agent, or the cruise line, go under?

Air tickets would be with points.

    • Sam G says:

There is some grey area where you use an agent and you try do S75 claim – can’t remember the details – this might be useful – https://www.ukfinance.org.uk/faqs-chargeback-rights-and-section-75-and-coronavirus – I ran into a similar issue when flybe went bust and I had used an OTA but HSBC paid in the end. Personally I’d try book direct and use a CC then there is no ambiguity over who the contract is with and where the funds went. Otherwise travel insurance with end supplier failure cover might be an option

    • GeorgeJ says:

Book direct with a credit card on the lowest deposit option you can get! Why would you want to use an agent, you can get most of the perks by going direct, just ask.

  • Phil W says:

Flying MUCFRAEDI on Saturday. Couple of questions:

    1. Do LH offer the ability to check luggage in the night before a flight?

    2. We only have 1h to connect at FRA. What chances are there of making that?

    TIA

    • Sam G says:

Assuming nothing has changed you can check in until 9pm day prior (no more than 23hrs before your flight)

If your connection is on time you’ll make it, Frankfurt is well set up for connections. There is a good thread on FT if you want to try familiarise yourself with the route / gates etc. I had a very short connection from Singapore to Milan once and it helped I knew roughly where I was going and what the steps were going to be

      • Phil says:

        Thanks Sam, much appreciated.

        • ChrisC says:

You might be able to do OLCI 23hrs before but I don’t think you can physically check in BAGGAGE the night before with Lufty.

I’d check what the Lufty website says.

    • John says:

Potentially very long walks so hope you are reasonably fit
Remember it’s Schengen to non Schengen so passport control needed

  • David wakelin says:

First lounge LHR now has self-service drinks & snacks as well as “your menu” ordering – useful if you want to sneak a tin or two onto the plane !!
