Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Get 2,000 Virgin Points by activating Tesco Clubcard Auto-Convert

Tesco and Avios may have gone their separate ways but Virgin Atlantic remains a Tesco Clubcard partner.

Virgin Atlantic has launched another bonus if you agree to convert your future Clubcard points. You will receive 2,000 bonus Virgin Points if you switch your Tesco Clubcard account to auto-convert points to Virgin Flying Club.

There is also an extra carrot this time around. One person who sets up autoconvert will win 40,000 Virgin Points.

To turn on auto-convert, you need to visit the Clubcard website here.

Sign in to your account and click on ‘Clubcard Account’.  Select ‘Account Management’ and then ‘Voucher Schemes’.  From this page you can select the “Virgin Points” box to enable auto-exchange.

Note that:

  • you must activate auto-convert by 13th September
  • you must keep auto-convert turned on until at least the next Tesco voucher date of 21st October
  • you must have at least £1.50 of Clubcard vouchers available for conversion on 21st October
  • you must not have received a bonus for turning on auto-convert to Virgin Flying Club in the past
  • your 2,000 Virgin Points will be awarded by 21st November

I am usually a little sceptical about auto-converting your Clubcard points. You would miss out if a conversion bonus came along, or indeed a better Tesco Clubcard offer launched with another partner.

In general, it is better to keep your Clubcard vouchers in a drawer until you need them, or until a conversion bonus appears.

However …. the days of lucrative offers on Tesco Clubcard seem to be over.  2,000 Virgin Points is also a VERY good incentive – you’d usually need to spend £800 in Tesco to earn £8 of Clubcard vouchers to receive 2,000 points.

On this basis, assuming you’d only generate a few pounds of vouchers per quarter, you are likely to be better off by activating auto-convert for a while and seeing how it goes.

You can see details of this new Tesco / Virgin Points bonus on the Virgin Flying Club / Tesco Clubcard page here.

  • RussellH says:

I only got 1000 points the last time the Clubcard offer ran. Complained, but never got any reply, not even a refusal!
Now stuck with 2551 Virgin points and not inclined to get any more.

Anyone know if the Virgin Red app runs on Android 5.1.1?

    • Rob says:

Virgin Red works perfectly fine on desktop computers, it isn’t ‘app only’ despite how it is promoted.

      • RussellH says:

I thought that if one wanteda Gregg’s coffee or sausage roll, one had to show a QR code on a phone to the person serving you. Or do they accept paper QR codes too?

  • LS says:

Im assuming BA charge Qantas/Qatar/AA for their guests using the lounge?

Would it not be worthwhile for them to open up a lounge somewhere with high throughput of other airlines’ in oneworld passengers, to charge those other airlines for access?

    • Martin says:

I was wondering if they charge each other for each others lounges.
We had lot flights abs they scanned our boarding card in lufthansa line and then told us they had no food on opening day the 26th.
Luckily lot have an agreement with plaza premium..

      • LS says:

They must do, surely. Any idea on inter-alliance lounge charges/financing Rob/Rhys?

        • Rob says:

I have been told by people who know that the cost is far higher than you would expect (so presumably more than members of the public pay for No1 etc) but I’ve never seen an exact number.

          • Stuart says:

It makes them RFS redemptions to Europe from terminal 3 where I lounge hopped for 5 hours a very expensive ticket for BA!

          • lumma says:

If it’s a lot of money, why does the American Airlines lounge at T3 seem to try to dissuade me from going in when not flying American? Qantas and Cathay never have an issue.

        • John says:

CX charges US$60 for J and US$80 for F, or did in 2019 at least.

Apparently the airline only pays for the first OW lounge you enter so if you go to BA first CX gets nothing, but that seemed a bit dubious to me

    • ChrisC says:

They all charge each other for visits. All that scanning of BPs on entry is part of that process.

One World have proposed having single One World lounges at some airports but saying it and doing it are different orders of magnitude.

Much easier to do it at new airports stillunder construction or where a terminal is being redeveloped than trying to come up with something in an existing space where it may not be practical.

      • Martin says:

No wonder they scanned our LOT boarding cards in Lufthansa Lounge, before telling us no food and no working toilets on opening day..
        Money for nothing..

  • MilesOnPoint says:

Any thoughts on when CX might be inclined to reopen their lounge @ Heathrow now they have moved back to T3? (especially given the number of Oneworld airlines now using the newly opened BA T3 lounge)

    • Rob says:

Won’t happen until they can fill multiple flights per day which will be 2022 at best. I think BA will be the sole OW option for quite a while.

  • Chris Heyes says:

Hmmm wondering if it would be worth it or even possible to open a virgin red acc just for the bonus auto convert Tesco then transfer to Hilton points ?
Not at all interested in Virgin Red so it would be a one off
Or Just use Tesco to Hilton Vouchers ?
    any thoughts please ?

  • AndyS says:

Tesco > Virgin. It says : “you must have at least £1.50 of Clubcard vouchers available for conversion on 21st October” But as you have to convert 250 clubcard points to 625 virgin miles, surely you must have £2.50 for autoconvert to work – or is this a loophole that you would get the bonus but still keep 1.50 in the clubcard account ?

  • Mark M says:

“…In general, it is better to keep your Clubcard vouchers in a drawer until you need them…”
So. does the Clubcard > Virgin process auto convert ALL of your existing CC vouchers?
And if so, is there a way to save them safely, then reinstate later?
