The HfP chat thread – Saturday 31st July

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

How would you know when you’ve passed the £500 limit on Curve’s overseas spend? Does the app break it down?

    • StevieKicks says:

I think you just have to add up the value of your transactions manually

    • Gavin says:

I could not see any breakdown, it just starts charging more. I think you have to keep tabs manually. In my case I did a large transaction which took me over the limit, and part of the transaction was calculated at the higher fee.

    • Matty says:

If you click on the transaction I think it shows the fee.

    • Mr. AC says:

It shows an extra fee in the details of the affected transactions (same place where the weekend fee breakdown goes).

    • Oli says:

Is this £500 limit on calendar months, ie resets tomorrow?

  • Michael C says:

@LadyLondon & co. Just to say re. my (permanently) cancelled return IOM-LHR: BA flat-out refused me through half a dozen channels to re-route me IOM-EDI (Loganair)-LHR, which was the only possibility. “Not OneWorld/partner”. However much I huffed/puffed/EU261-ed!
I did get half refunded in order to use the outbound (although this took 48 hours to “calculate”), and am now returning boat/train! Cheaper and same time or less as re-route, so hey-ho!

    • Bill says:

I’d send the sail and rail ticket to Loganair and ask them to reimburse you

      • Sam G says:

your right to remedy ends when you took the refund. Could have just left the booking and then tried this afterwards. If it didn’t work then you could either have taken the refund at that point or pursued further via CEDR or MCOL (if the £ was worth it!)

        • Lady London says:

          Exactly.
Taking any form of refund, probably even partial, loses you the chance to get what you have a right to but BA is denying. That’s why you should never accept any refund if you have better rights.

MCOL is deliberately made simple, uncomplicated, cheap and risk-free for little customers who are being bullied and abused, for example by giant companies with far more resources than them.

  • Lady London says:

Thanks for letting us know but buying your ticket for your own choice of flights and then doing a simple mcol form with a small fee would have got you all your costs back plus fees.

Although unusual at mcol given BA bullying and denial of such clear rights I would also have put in my claim the out of pocket comms costs contacting them, my time spent using my professional rates as a benchmark, plus 8% statutory interest on the whole claim till paid. I’d have added a note that this is because BA cancelled your flight and repeatedly denied statutory rights which in this case you believe to be clear.

    • Michael C says:

Thanks so much, LL: I’d understood this to be the case, mainly from your incredibly informative posts, but for the minimal amount involved, and various other irritating issues at the moment, decided to cut losses and go stress-.free!
Will of course bear it all in mind for when it happens with a SIN J flight, etc. etc.!

  • Sam G says:

Oh but it’s cheaper, so obviously your way is better! Worth a try with Loganair but it’d be a customer service gesture. Why didn’t you just book Easyjet out of interest?

    • Michael C says:

LGW much more inconvenient for us in general: v poor transport links and, on this occasion, no car. And of course, booking so late, it’d be triple the price.
      Plus, it’s LGW ;o)

  • Lewis says:

Any etiquette or rules on how to convert a soon to expire 2-4-1 in to a FTV?
Can I just book online and then ring up later that day to cancel?

  • Manya says:

Any suggestions on a number to call BA exec club that won’t tell they’re too busy and ask me to call back?

Trying to amend the return leg for a trip that we are currently on and need to speak to someone ASAP to lock in AVIOS availability.

I’m not having any luck with +44-844-493-0-747

  • Reeferman says:

Here’s some numbers HfP previously advised:
    https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2021/04/01/what-is-the-british-airways-executive-club-silver-line-telephone-number-2/

Hopefully one will work for you

    Good luck!

    • Manya says:

Thanks. Managed to speak to someone, what I thought would be a straight forward change of airport needs someone from back office team to recalculate the taxes and for me to call back once I’ve been informed of the revised amount.

Nothing is straightforward with BA recently.

  • Keith says:

Hi, does anybody have one of the referral codes offering the enhanced Platinum sign-up bonus (I think it’s 70,000) they would like to share with me?
