Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

For those who aren’t picking up bottles of Molton Brown from hotel rooms (or Maid’s trolleys), there’s a 10% offer across my LBG cards this morning.

  • ChrisC says:

Finally a meaningful offer for me on MBNA rewards!

10% of a single UK stay at a IHG brand.

    Max payout is £30

    • Andrew says:

And on NatWest Rewards too – seems to separate out the offer for different IHG brands so can probably be used multiple times if staying at different brands.

    • Harrier25 says:

Not as good as the current Amex IHG offer.

  • Lisbon says:

Collison group antigen test costs 40 Pounds and with discount code:priority20 it comes to 32 pounds for an in person test at LCY (20 mins by tube/car for me) or other airports .Other tests look cheaper than express test if the discount code is applied .I have priority card through Amex anyway.

Like i posted yesterday planning to take the test on Friday Evening to travel to Lisbon and use the same result to enter England on Sunday. Ya responses please.

  • Mco says:

Any discounts available for Manchester Airport on site parking? Only discounts I can find are the off site car parks.

  • Colin MacKinnon says:

Anyone know when Air Tahiti Nui releases award seats to American Airlines?

Looking at Tahiti for August next year – probably from Tokyo, but maybe from LAX to give a side trip to family in the states.

    • meta says:

330 days more or less like all AA awards. It’s pretty much available all the time.

  • Super Secret Stuff says:

Last day of the Rimowa offer, to do it or not to do it? 🤔

    • RichardH says:

Had the same dilemma with Rimowa, finally went for it a couple of days ago – remember the extra Avois:

      https://www.shopping.ba.com/retailers/rimowa-uk

The transaction has arrived on my AMEX, but I didn’t get an automatic notification for the promo – wondering whether manual intervention might be required.

My only word of caution is that my (online) order was not processed at all until the next business day – so you might need to go to the physical store today to be sure of qualifying.

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

Ahhh the payment processing might be an issue, no way I could get the rimowa store.

Out of curiosity how long were you waiting for the points? Only reason I haven’t done it yet is I’d need the points within 30 days so I can still return it. Think they are waiting as long as possible with this offer for that exact reason

  • C F Frost says:

“Ben White: Arsenal sign England defender from Brighton in £50m deal”

If they’d paid with Amex it would have been 49,999,700 😀

  • Clubx says:

Avios devaluation on partber rewards have been devaluated again. HKG-TYO in business is now 50k return for example. CX redemption takes the worst hit as it seems.

    • Sam G says:

      CX & JL – good analysis here – https://mainlymiles.com/2021/07/28/has-british-airways-devalued-avios-short-haul-cathay-pacific-and-jal-redemptions/

Not surprising, bit of a sweet spot vs Asia Miles etc in the region which I doubt the local carriers were happy about

    • Gavin says:

That’s a real shame about the short-haul JAL devaluation. I used it many times when it was 4500 per sector and last visit at 6000. Now at 7500 per sector, it will be better value to book in cash using the JAL Explorer Pass fare (5,500 to 11,000 Yen) or the ANA equivalent. Especially since GBP has been strengthening a bit vs. JPY over the past year.

    • BuildBackBetter says:

The devaluation was long due. Applying intra-europe mileage chart for Asia was always expensive for Avios. Another sweet spot gone.

      • Jimmy says:

Yep – did HKG – DPS on cathay for 25k in economy – got bumped to business when amex gave out free Marco Polo gold.

This was in a 747 with a first class cabin – got upgraded again.

Best use of 25k avios ever – probably to this day the best premium flight experience with their excellent cabin crew.
