When Nectar and Avios began their partnership in January 2021, it opened up Sainsbury’s Bank as another potential route for indirectly earning Avios.

When it comes to earning Avios from insurance, your best bet is Alan Boswell Insurance Brokers. You can read about Alan Boswell’s Avios offer in this article. They can offer you up to 10,000 Avios when you take out household, business, medical or landlord insurance.

Boswell doesn’t offer Avios on all insurance types, however, and Sainsbury’s Bank could fill some of the gaps. Details of what it offers are here.

What insurance products can I buy from Sainsbury’s Bank?

These are the insurance products on offer:

Sainsburys Bank life insurance Nectar offer

Get 22,000 Nectar points with a life insurance sign-up offer

There is currently a generous offer running on Sainsbury’s Bank life insurance as you can see here.

This what you can earn:

  • 10,000 Nectar points (6,250 Avios) if your policy is under £8.50 per month
  • 16,000 Nectar points (10,000 Avios) if your policy is £8.50 to £20 per month
  • 22,000 Nectar points (13,750 Avios) if your policy is over £20 per month

You don’t qualify for the points until you have paid your first five monthly premiums. After this time, the points may take a further 60 days to reach your Nectar account.

You also earn a MONTHLY Nectar bonus with your insurance

When you become a Sainsbury’s Bank insurance customer, you receive a monthly points bonus. This is equivalent to the base points you earned in Sainsbury’s and at Sainsbury’s petrol stations during the previous month.

For example, if you spend £200 across Sainsbury’s and its fuel stations in August, you would receive a bonus of 200 Nectar points in September.

Here’s the clever bit. The more insurance policies you buy, the bigger your bonus.

Each Nectar account can earn the bonus from one car, one home, one pet, one travel and one life insurance policy. This means that you could earn a monthly bonus worth FIVE TIMES your monthly spending in Sainsbury’s, assuming you had five policies across the five categories above.

Is this a good offer? Clearly it depends on how much you spend at Sainsbury’s and how little you spend on insurance. I can imagine how, for someone with substantial Sainsbury’s spending, the bonus points could effectively make the insurance free.

To be clear, it is only base points from Sainsbury’s supermarket and garages which are doubled. Bonus point offer in-store are not doubled, nor points from Argos, Habitat, Sainsbury’s Bank, Sainsbury’s Energy and other Sainsbury’s services are not included.

Earning Nectar points with Sainsburys Bank insurance

You may receive targetted offers for other policy types

To be honest, it is quite rare for Sainsbury’s to offer an ‘open to all’ sign up bonus such as the current life insurance deal.

It is more common for you to be offered targetted deals via the Nectar app. For example, I am currently offered 7,000 Nectar points (4,375 Avios) if I take out home insurance. This offer does not appear if you visit the home insurance website.

Conclusion

As the value of any insurance offer is totally dependent on the premium you are quoted, you clearly need to look at any Nectar earning in the context of what your policy will cost.

That said, it is worth keeping an eye on the Nectar app to see what targetted sign-up offers are made available to you.

It is also true that, if you have substantial monthly spend at Sainsbury’s supermarkets and petrol stations, the monthly bonus points could represent a good return on your premiums.

  • Ian McDowall says:

My 20k nectar arrived this morning. 😁

  • Mr. AC says:

Can someone who tries filling out the application report what’s the lowest life insurance premium they could get? E.g. paying a minimum of 40 quid to get 10k nectar is not exactly a smashing deal.

    • Jonathan says:

“ The amount of life cover selected was too low, so we have increased it to match the minimum premium we can offer you.”

      Minimum premium being £5/month

    • BJ says:

£5, maximum 2 policies per household per year. If you are over 50 then their over 50s policy is the best deal given what I guess to be your intentions.

      • Munch says:

Just received my 20000 points for over 50’s policy. I assume I can now cancel? Is the annual limit start when you take out the policy?

        • BJ says:

Urs, you can cancel. I am not certain on the answer to your other question. I cycle them so that I receive the 2x bonus in 1 calender year and so far that has worked.

      • fivebobbill says:

Hey BJ, were your 2 per household on the one Nectar card, or two?
I ask as I took a couple of the over 50’s out for me and the wife at the same time, but she doesn’t have her own Nectar card so I registered them both onto mine. One of them (don’t know which, it just says Sainsburys bank Award on my statement), paid out 20,000 the day after 5th payment on July 1st, no sign of the other a month later.
Both were taken out at exactly the same time. I know T&C’s say up to 60 days, but I raised the matter with L&G the other day and got an email next day to say they were investigating.

        • BJ says:

In my case both policies were in my name and on my Nectar card as my partner is not yet over 50. Note that I never took the policies out at the same time, they did not even overlap as I cancelled one before starting the next. I believe you are entitled to both bonuses so hopefully L&G will sort it out. I think the key is two bonuses per household per year, not about Nectar accounts and names.

          • fivebobbill says:

Thanks for this, in hindsight your strategy does look to be a better bet than mine, but I wasn’t sure how long the offer would be out there so dived in for both at once. We’ll see how we go with L&G, the agent did seem fairly receptive and the follow-up email says they’ve passed it onto Sainsbury’s to investigate. I shall of course report on any progress 😊

          • BJ says:

The offer has been running off and (mostly) on for years and I’ve took advantage since I turned 50. Funded a lot of VTEC and LNER with them. Only surprise is that L&G keep paying out despite me cancelling. I expect you’ll get your points.

  • kevbar says:

Sainsburys Bank are refusing to pay my 6000 points for car insurance from last December, with various made up excuses.

    • Pablo says:

They never paid out for my imaginary cat insurance either. However they paid out promptly for my life insurance.

  • Colin MacKinnon says:

How do the points appear on your statement? I have the credit card and an over 50s life assurance, but just one 20,000 point credit (Sainsbury’s Bank)

    • BJ says:

You should also have monthly transactions fir SB under your Nectar app activity detailing the bonus poiht credits Rob refers to.

  • M says:

Is this a Steve Belkin style scaling opportunity? Should I find 50 students willing to sign up for insurance? 😁

  • Nick says:

I don’t know if anyone else took advantage, but we briefly had a taste of the old HfP Tesco Pet Insurance days back in April, when Sainsbury’s pet insurance were offering 8,000 Nectar points for taking out a policy. My son’s rabbit was covered for a small monthly premium, and, very surprisingly, the 8,000 Nectar points were posted only 3 weeks after the policy started. Worth looking out for in future.

  • Luke says:

I just applied but they insist on a health check before proceeding. I probably shouldn’t have been so truthful about alcohol consumption.
Anyway, the time and inconvenience of a health check outweigh the points, so application is being cancelled.
