Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Friday 30th July

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

A friend has had to travel to india, does anyone if there are any country they could fly back to for 11 days without needing to quarantine, or at least where they could quarantine in a cheap hotel rather than the uk red list hotels? The complicating factor is they only have had 1 vaccination and may be travelling with someone thats had 2 doses of the indian vaccine?

    • Aaron C says:

Iceland – but as they are not fully vaccinated that may be a problem.
Russia or Serbia too maybe – I think they are pretty liberal.

I think some EU places do recognise full Indian vaccination including Ireland so maybe the partially vaccinated person could complete their vaccines in India?

      • Blenz101 says:

Are they both on UK passports? Doubt they can apply for a Russia visa from India using the example above.

I would have suggested Georgia but I think they have specific rules just for anybody who has been in India.

    • Pete M says:

I know Mexico is allowing everyone in – saw loads of Indians at the airport. Have heard rumours it could itself go red, though…

      • meta says:

Croatia – entry with a PCR or antigen test. They’ll also need a letter from accommodation to confirm reservation.

        • Mutley says:

Unless staying with relatives of course and then no need for confirmation

    • Blenz101 says:

If you look here https://www.kayak.ae/travel-restrictions/ and select origin as India you can see where you can get in.

Just then need to see how that aligns with the UK list and hope nothing changes at the next review.

    • AJA says:

Assuming they have a British passport this is where they can go. Basically limited to Romania, Albania and Mexico

Hi all, just wondering about the following what happens to your priority pass after cancelling the platinum card, does it get cancelled, or can I still use it?
We want to downgrade to gold as we can’t really justify the yearly fee any more.

    • sloth says:

      cancels at same time automatically

      • Rob says:

… because a PP is automatically rejected at the lounge if it doesn’t have a valid credit card ‘behind it’ to fund additional guests. If it was possible to swap your Amex Platinum for another credit card then it may continue to work, but you can’t.

Worth taking a punt on the USA opening for Brits in January or not a chance?

    • Rob says:

Depends what your punt is! Would I buy a cash ticket now, knowing that I’d be forced into taking a voucher if I couldn’t go? No. Would I book an Avios ticket if availability was there, only risking £35 to cancel? Yes

      • Aaron C says:

Cheers Rob. Would either be Avios or an existing FTV.

        • ChrisC says:

Personally my US trips have all been booked via BA holidays. Even if you just have one night in a hotel (it can be at the airport the night before) it counts as a holiday and you only need to pay a deposit

True you would need to cancel 3 weeks before and get an FTV but at least you’ve only paid BA a small deposit rather then the full cost of a flight,.

  • Michael says:

Currently at the new royal senses Crete curio collection… Can’t recommend it enough for a family getaway! Enjoying it so much just extended my stay!!

  • Marie says:

Well done BA. An amazing 9 minutes on BA bronze line to cancel Rome flights !
Now whether or not a should take a punt and swap to Montenegro?

  • Toby says:

Niche question: I’m considering opening a Wise Business account. If anyone has a referral link for that, please pop it below.

  • Tony Soprano says:

Afternoon all, very basic question today.. How do I search through historical daily chat threads?
I’m sure it can be done via google advanced search but cannot remember how exactly! Would rather not ask the same questions that I have seen answered previously, if poss.
    Many thanks!

    • Doogie says:

Normally googling site:headforpoints.com and the words or phrase should bring up the results. You can also use “phrase in quotes” for exact phrases

      • Tony Soprano says:

Thanks Doogie. That seems to work to find articles but not working to find comments within the daily threads. I’ll keep playing around!

        • Doogie says:

Certainly site:headforpoints.com “bendy beard che” gets you a chat thread, and site:headforpoints.com bendy gets you a load so they are indexed

  • BJ says:

What’s happening with the avios-Nectar transfers since the nonexistent automation returned; are the Nectar points appearing exactly 10 days later? I did a transfer on the 21st but no sign of the Nectar points yet although the avios were deducted from BA when I initiated the transfer.
