We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • GRIMZ says:

If I use a BA 241 voucher on flights from ABZ – Palma with a connection in London, (I cannot go direct) do I get the entire journey as half the avios?

    • AJA says:

Yes you should do providing you can book it as one ticket ie ABZ-PMI. The change in LHR would be incidental. If you book ABZ-LHR on one ticket and LHR-PMI on a separate ticket then only one of the flights will be eligible.

      • Anna says:

But note that you will have to pay avios plus RFS fee for both sectors 😩

        • GRIMZ says:

When I do a dummy booking (without adding in the voucher) the fee comes up as £2!! That can’t be right?

          • Genghis says:

£2 + a lot of avios? Add in the voucher and it should price up at the “old” (i.e. accurate for the voucher) rates.

  • Kipto says:

Has anyone used the VeriFLY app ? Is it worthwhile having ? Opened the app and I could only see American Airlines as the airline option in the drop down menu.

Is it possible to upload the proof of double vaccine and the Spanish health form prior to online checking in with BA. ?

    • Liam says:

I haven’t used it since proving vaccination became possible/necessary but I did use it when I flew LAX-LHR on BA and LHR-LAX on AA in March, to prove I’d uploaded the necessary documents and negative test, and it was really simple and saved me a few minutes at check-in each time. The agent glanced at it for five seconds, saw the big green tick, and that was enough.

    • AFKAE says:

I used it last week. It did offer both AA and BA in the drop down boxes.

I uploaded proof of vaccination, Covid status (lateral flow to return) and PLF for both myself and companion. Probs took 15 mins or so…..longest part is taking photo of companion.

Having done all that it was a total waste of time, couldn’t get anyone remotely interested. It might be mostly aimed at transatlantic, I was coming back from Madeira.

      • meta says:

I used it for Croatia recently and couldn’t recommend highly enough both outbound and inbound. You have to do it before online check-in. Didn’t have to show anything to check-in agents and check-in lasted a minute tops. It way like old times. The agent just said, I can see it all in the system and issued the boarding pass which had a line- “verifly ok!” The verification process by Verifly for the outbound took longer (overnight as I did it after 10pm), but on the inbound it took 2-3 minutes tops.

        • John says:

Ditto – I also used for Croatia. It offered both AA and BA as airlines. On the outbound I didn’t have to show any paperwork until Croatian immigration – I presume because BA matched up my information with the booking code (which it did ask for).
Will see how clever it is tomorrow when my “companion” doesn’t fall under the same booking code as myself – but when she checked in online, she wasn’t asked for any paperwork by BA, so fingers crossed. In any case, it’s nice to have an extra green check somewhere, it provides reassurance.

          • meta says:

Croatian immigration was totally disinterested in seeing any paperwork other than my passport, but I am dual national. I tried to show my vaccination certificate, but they just asked where I came from and said no need and let me through after scanning my passport. It all felt oddly normal.

      • Chelseafi says:

I used it Monday for my trip to Spain with BA but when I tried to check in online I had to uploaded all the requested docs on BA and they verified them in couple of hours

        • meta says:

Did you do it before doing online check-in? Maybe due to traffic volume they do it differently for Spain.

          • Chelseafi says:

Yes I started it a few days before but you can’t complete as some questions are on health and need to be completed no sooner then 48 hours before flight. It was useful cause it provides the links of what you have to complete, so when checking in with BA it was just a case of uploading the QR codes from the Spanish form and the NHS vaccine details.

  • Ste C says:

Is this new? Just checked the referral offer on my OH Gold card, I can pick between 6000 MR points or £30 statement credit

    • Ls says:

I think it’s new. Take the points. Convert to nectar via avios and get 0.8ppp rather than 0.5.

    • Harry T says:

I just have the offer to get 15,000 MR rather than 6000

    • TGLoyalty says:

Is it not simply pointing out you can redeem the 6k points for a statement credit?

      • Ste C says:

nope, there is a selector and the link changes depending on what you pick.

  • Muhammad Abdullah says:

Shambles at breakfast today in Conrad SJ. Our service was OK but many guests complaining about waiting times, orders taken twice, it was just uncomfortable to hear all the complaints and issues while eating your brekkie.

Hope they didn’t pay the £28 plus 12.5% for a Full English.

The area in reception sprung a leak last night and a bin from a guest room was left (with hazard signage) to catch the drips.

    Not very 5*.

    • Henry says:

Would you have preferred they let the water accumulate on the carpet?

      • TGLoyalty says:

Probably Fix it before guests even see it … but that’s not Conrad SJ pricing it’s multiples of that to get that sort of service.

  • Andrew says:

    BMI Lives on!

Just reading my updated MBNA Horizon Credit Card Agreement. “The Credit Card Intermediary: BMI of Donnington Hall Castle, Donnington, Derby, East Midlands, DE74 2SB”

Who knew they still existed in the background?

  • Gormlesstraveller says:

I am the sort of person who stays in hotels where the coathangers can’t be removed and I was wondering about Choice Hotels. Not many in the UK but plentiful in Scandinavia and USA, especially the Comfort Hotel brand. Is their loyalty scheme any good or is better to book through hotels.com?

    • Rob says:

The US scheme is generally seen as very average EXCEPT the Nordic Choice ones which are, as all things Nordic, crazily expensive for cash but decent value for points.

    • Travel Strong says:

Choice will do status matches FYI. Haven’t looked in to who they match from, definitely Hyatt, probably many others.

  • Anna says:

Okay we have 2 vaccination certs, 2 negative Covid certs and 4 Spanish health check certs with QR codes – is this all we need to get on our flight to TFS tomorrow?! (On top of the pre-Covid docs, obviously!)

    • Optimus Prime says:

Don’t forget the face masks 🙂

      • Anna says:

        We have a box of 50 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

        • Optimus Prime says:

Have you printed out the vaccination certs? My NHS app isn’t working as of now…

    • Harry T says:

      Should be fine!

    • Jody says:

      Have a great trip Anna.

      • Anna says:

Thanks all – yes all of it printed as back up!

I hope it gets better than the newly minted Doubletree at MAN. We were greeted by the stench of the weed that people were smoking outside the front door, our rooms were on different floors (never mind interconnecting, Rob!), our drinks order was wrong, as was the food order; it was 1 hour 20 mins before we got all the correct items. To top it off the air con isn’t working!

  • KP says:

Does anyone know if I make a booking through Emyr then can I use my suite night awards for marriott ? … or not ….?

    • Harry T says:

As long as the property is eligible for SNA use, I think it should be okay. I’m afraid I’ve only booked STARS at RC and EDITION via Emyr, which are properties where you can’t use an SNA anyway.

    • Aso40 says:

I asked this question a couple of days ago, and went ahead and booked with Emyr based on the helpful responses. SNAs successfully applied today.
