We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Data point.. Just got back from 7 nights in the new Hilton resort and Spa in Rijeka Croatia.
I’m a diamond member I paid 60k points per night for a standard room, on arrival I was upgraded to one of the villas (priced at €700 per night) with a gorgeous sea view.
The hotel is brand new and the spa facilities are superb, the hotel gym would rival any UK Pure gym or Bannatyne establishment for space and also equipment.
We also got lounge access which was a lovely quiet area to relax in away from the main restaurant area.
Also head to Nebo on the top floor of the hotel, the signature restaurant is outstanding and the views and food are the best I’ve ever had the pleasure of enjoying in that part of the world.

All in all I got great value on this one from my Hilton points.
Total points spend for 6 nights minus the 5th day discount was 300k
Total cash price for room allocated on arrival was £3750
All in all a great trip and one I’d recommend 👍

Should also point out i spent the 7th night of the holiday in the Double tree in Zagreb as I come back a day earlier from Rijeka than planned to see the city and make sure i wasn’t going to miss my flight back to LHR
I used 24000 points for this.

    • BJ says:

Thanks for this Mark, sounds great. Glad you enjoyed.

    • Vin says:

Glad you enjoyed @Mark. You will find that you’ll also receive the 1000 points Diamond MyWay bonus and any spend at the hotel will attract the current triple points promo for stays of 3 nights or over. In addition, rewards nights redemption count towards status and ‘milestones’.
Will bring down the cost of your redemption further 🙂

OT – Can you use Avios to reduce the balance of a BA holiday please?

  • Pete M says:

Morning all! Has anyone been to LGW in the afternoon/evening recently, please? I have a 1930 departure tomorrow and wondering what’s open around that time, as I gather all the lounges will be shut by then…

    • John Gallagher says:

2 weeks ago all shops were open, restaurants were closed but I recall Pret was open. And yes all lounges close around 2pm.

    • Travel Strong says:

Weatherspoons is the lounge of choice in the afternoon right now.

  • Simon says:

Would anyone likely know or roughly guestimate when the next Marriott Points sale is likely to be? I think there was one in Feb and I was wondering how frequently they tend to appear these days? Many thanks in advance.

  • revlou says:

Got my new Amex Preferred Rewards Gold Card yesterday. Much to my surprise it’s the new US design, even though the UK website, the app and Apple Pay are still showing the old design. Has anyone else received the new design yet?

    • Andrew says:

Yes I got a new design gold card as a supp on my Platinum a few weeks ago. I don’t like the sliver numbers as it clashes – the black numbers of the old design were a better match to the gold background.

      • revlou says:

Thanks, not just me them! I guess they are phasing them in. Agreed on the black numbers looking better, although the rest of new card design is neater in my opinion.

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

+1 except that I quite like it, especially the black “American Express” writing. Looks very classy to those who care about that

    • Manny_D says:

Guess they wont be bringing the metal Gold card to the UK then if they’re already slowly rolling out the new design. Would’ve much preferred the numbers on the back.

      • Rob says:

Metal Gold is rolling out across Europe already. Only a matter of time.

        • Manny_D says:

Ah fair enough, heard any rumblings on its arrival to the UK as of yet?

          • Rob says:

No, but you can be fairly sure it will be attached to a ‘refresh’ which involves a fee hike 🙂

  • Joe Green says:

I have 100k MR points in business platinum that I want to close.
Any point hanging on for 0.9p cash out bonus they offered a few months back and last year? Or any other transfer bonus?

    • Peter K says:

I had this dilemma with personal platinum. Decided that last year they were offering unusual bonuses to keep hold of people, but with things opening up the gravy train had likely left so transferred out.

    • Rob says:

Avios to Nectar gets you 0.8p so you won’t lose much.

Bigger issue is whether you are willing to give up the flexibility of MR vs whatever you go into.

  • SimonP says:

    Octopus energy referral code please

    • Carol says:

      share.octopus.energy/peach-crab-530. Thanks

    • Rhys says:

      Too slow 🙂

      • Rich says:

A marketing guru should study this.

The chance of an Octopus is one of the reasons I pop back onto H4P several times during the day, rather than just wait till evening and read all the comments at once!

      • Number9 says:

No Rhys I replied before anyone else it’s not the first time my link has been removed.

  • Bill says:

@LadyLondon – following in from yesterday messages. my explanation for not rebooking my cancelled easyJet flight is that one passenger had cancer. if i dont get a revooking I’ll just get a refund next week
