We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Question about the IHG Amex offer – has anyone tried it and established if it works on cumulative or online spend? Need to stay at a Hotel Indigo in August for 2 non-consecutive nights and am planning to book the advance rate online. Will hit the £200 threshold for the combined spend but not on each night individually. Thanks in advance!

    • Grant says:

I think this came up in yesterday’s chat and the answer was yes, it does trigger on cumulative spend.

      • WS says:

Thanks! Not sure how I missed it yesterday! I’m assuming that booking an advance rate online hasn’t been a problem despite the T&Cs excluding online?

  • Tazzy says:

I have a club Europe booked next week to Prague with Avios and paid £2. If I cancel do I lose the £2 or is it a £35 charge?

  • Panini Boss says:

Dumb Avios question (as I’ve never redeemed before). I’m looking to book flights for a 14-day 2022 holiday at a peak time. Therefore the outbound and inbound flights are 14 days apart.

I assume that I can only book the journey 355 days after the inbound return so there is no way to ‘protect’ the outbound flight. In other words, am I at the mercy of other travellers bookings for the 14 day window of my planned holiday?

    • Rhys says:

You can call up to book the outbound flights first and then call again 14 days later to book the return. The call centre will do it for you.

      • Panini Boss says:

Thanks Rhys – I forgot to mention that this will be using an Amex 2-4-1. Does that change things?

        • pauldb says:

No it doesn’t. You can book the outbound as a oneway online. Then call and have the inbound added to it, with the voucher benefit, on the appropriate day.

          • Neil says:

Be aware that on a popular route people do this at midnight and call an overseas call center to bag the tickets as soon as they are released

    • Anna says:

Depending on the route you can gain or lose (significantly) on the taxes/fees element, especially to the USA (lose).

      • Genghis says:

Only if you book the return leg online and then get a refund of points (but not taxes) paid (two PNRs) instead of on phone and adding return leg onto the outbound PNR.

  • Mike79 says:

Just been on Nectar app to get phone number to call to convert and there is a message advising it goes back online tomorrow 9am?

    • Sukes says:

Seeing that too. ‘From 9am Wednesday 21th July, you will be able to convert your Avios to Nectar online. You can still convert your Nectar points into Avios online as normal.’

    • BSI1978 says:

Well goodness me, if true that will surprise me and others I imagine who had thought this function would never be re-instated online!

    • BSI1978 says:

….although further to my original response, I am not seeing this message/advice anywhere on the Nectar app.

      • Andrew says:

It shows when you press the arrows in the transfer tool to change direction and instead of the phone number popping up this message pops up.

  • Rash says:

Any issues with me using my Amex Gold and supplementary Amex gold for the £5 Deliveroo credit? I.e having 4 transactions a month?

  • Roostee123 says:

Just tried calling up for my plat not had a retention offer since last September and due to renew in September but the only offers available where the downgrade to gold or pay monthly.
2nd time I’ve tried in 2 weeks am I doing anything wrong?

    • mutley says:

Wait until three weeks before annual fee is due, then go in hard ” not getting the travel benefits” etc, If they don’t offer anything be prepared to ask for 50000 MR, they may then counter with 35000 which is basically a years fee. I am guessing its largely determined by timing and your spend pattern, they will want to retain big spenders. They may of course offer nothing in which case your probably fooked in terms of getting retention bonus. Good luck 🙂

      • Roostee123 says:

        Thank you!
I will give it another go in around a month’s time which will be 3 weeks before

        • Chas says:

If you don’t have any success it might be worth trying a final time just after your card anniversary date. My renewal date was end of May, and I tried several times in the run-up to that to get a retention bonus, and was always fobbed off no matter the spiel I gave them. When I called 3 weeks after my renewal, I was suddenly offfered 50k….

      • KS says:

How is 35k equivalent to a year’s fee? Am I missing something?

    • Mouse says:

Waiting until 12 months since last retention bonus seems to help, and calling outside UK office hours so that you get the Manila(?) call centre. At least that’s what people have reported on here, and it worked for me.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Just ask them to go monthly anyway. It’s not a retention offer and won’t exclude you from getting a bonus to stay.

  • Alex says:

Can you double dip when booking an IHG hotel?

  • Niall says:

Has anybody noticed any pattern for who has been given the invite a friend exclusive referral offer (70k points for them, 24k for referrer) on the Platinum card?

I’ve hit my 90k annual limit and so now is the time for me to cancel my card (unless there is a retention offer), but I’m wondering which of the platinum card holders I know are most likely to have it.

    • Rob says:

I have an enhanced offer on my Bus Plat and I hit the referral target months ago … completely wasted unless they want to reset the limit – which they did do a couple of years ago.

      • Tom says:

        @Niall no worries.

I am surprised Rob doesn’t have some sort of no limit cap on his referrals given his relationship with Amex to be honest!

    • Tom says:

Niall, if you want to email me – tom at emailup.co.uk i can give you an enhanced referral for 70k.

      • Niall says:

Thanks Tom but I will definitely have others amongst friends who have this offer, so don’t think I need a referral. Was just more curious about who was vs wasn’t targeted.

@Rob – very interesting! Did they reset the limit for the same reason i.e. an enhanced offer which meant too many people hit their limit?
