Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Monday 19th July

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Data point: I phoned earlier today to convert Avios to Nectar. I’ve just had an email confirmation about the transaction and when I logged into Nectar I can see the revised balance

  • Optimus Prime says:

For those waiting on an update on the US travel ban: https://twitter.com/BBCJonSopel/status/1417152219661602822?s=20

    • Jonathan says:

His follow up comment is fairly crushing & considering he’s pretty well connected to the DC decision makers probably pretty accurate.

“There’d been speculation that travel ban for Britons travelling to the US would be lifted at G7. It wasn’t.
That was replaced by speculation it will be lifted by end of summer. It won’t, given latest CDC advice“

  • Benilyn says:

Unable to pay Beardy with Bendy/Shanghai/fronting for the last few days… anyone else?

    • Yorkie Aid says:

Beardy turned down my direct Che payment earlier.

    • Reney says:

haven’t managed it since 2 July, I kept trying for about 2 weeks and have now given up.

    • Tom H says:

Same had to switch to rev, but now don’t earn points with WE when topping up rev unfortunately

    • AnotherUser says:

I was having problems paying beardy with bendy fronting. Didn’t find a fix – I had too small a bill to be worth the time for me

  • Tiger says:

Can Sainsbury’s gift cards be used to pay for fuel?

    • Andrew Mc says:

      No.

    • Rui N. says:

If they were bought at the supermarket, yes.

      • Brighton Belle says:

Last week the Sainsbury’s fuel station refused to take my gift card for fuel … the gift card was purchased at the same location. It looks like it depends on the till operator.

  • GaryE says:

Quick question – is the IHG offer £50 off £200 on cumulative spend or must it be done in one transaction? Thanks

  • David says:

USA raises risk level of travel to UK/Plague Island to highest level, thanks to blundering Boris and his let it rip policyhttps://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices/covid-4/coronavirus-united-kingdom
Good luck getting into the US anytime soon.

    • Harry T says:

RIP USA summer holidays, I guess.

    • SimonP says:

Please let us know what has changed regarding getting into the US – thanks.

      • David says:

What do you mean? Nothing has changed nor did anyone said it had. The point is, surely, that if the US have upped their level of concern for the UK, it’s more likely they won’t be allowing ‘us’ to travel there anytime soon.

        • SimonP says:

Ah, sorry @David I may have misunderstood you. I thought you were suggesting that something had changed. As spouse is US citizen I am hoping to travel there in September and was concerned that maybe there was another snafu.

    • Dot Cotton says:

Let’s all just stay cooped up forever then. It still wont go away ….

    • Anna says:

It’s no better in the US though – even Boris looks informed and consistent next to the kind of conspiracy theorists and “freedom” endorsers who seem to hold sway over there!

      • Iain says:

I think you’ll find that the infection levels are signifciantly better in the US

    • James says:

The US situation continues to be bizarre though. Most of their level 4 highest risk countries are allowed in and yet some they class as lower risk with better testing/vaccines aren’t.

Very interesting to see what this update is that biden has this week.

  • Harry says:

Terminal 3. Club Aspire or No1 lounge?

  • Natalie Bennett says:

As we have Che, Beardy, Solihull, Seagulls, Bendy etc, what do I call my Santander Credit card? Basque? AntnDec? Spanishfly? Jose?
