The HfP chat thread – Monday 19th July

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Are there any Plat Business referral codes worth using at the moment?

    • Optimus Prime says:

I think now the referrer gets 30k points instead of 18k (until 7 Sept). The signup bonus is still 60k though.

    • TGLoyalty says:

I don’t think there’s anything but the 60k available from any referral link.

    • James says:

There are 70k personal plat referrals still though and not sure whether the business plat gives you anything over and above what you would get from the personal one?

      • TGLoyalty says:

A bonus every 6m rather than 24m and doesn’t exclude you from personal.

  • Mark says:

Looking at a Hilton booking in Barcelona which is a non-cancellable rate. Because I want to get the 50 pounds off Amex offer, I’m guessing I have no choice but to pay in the hotel’s local currency rather than being able to pay in GBP online it seems to avoid the FX fee etc.

    • Rob says:

If you’re booking via the Hilton website it is almost certainly charging in Euro even if you set the display to £. Amex does not allow businesses to charge in any currently other than their home currency.

  • Ben says:

Just noticed that the bonus when I refer on my Amex plat is a whopping 70,000 points (usual spend £4,000 within 3 months). The referral bonus I receive is 24,000 points (has been that way a while), but I did not realise the recipient bonus has been doubled aswell – is this targeted? Happy to provide a referral code if offer not widespread.

    • TGLoyalty says:

      Yes it’s targetted.

    • mark2 says:

I have got it but have already exceeded 90,000 for referrals.
Amex computer must have a sense of humour!

  • Bill says:

I’ve got a referral code if anyone needs it

I will be flying to Switzerland on Sunday. Anyone with experience departing terminal 2 recently?

    • MIchael C says:

Just seeing someone off 10 days ago, but all v v easy. No queues anywhere at all, everything on time, Costa + WHSmith’s open!

    • iSub says:

I was in T2 a month on a Saturday morning / lunchtime for a flight to Ireland. I was hand luggage only and the queues at security were a little lighter than average. The queues at Aer Lingus bag drop looked worse than normal though. The terminal felt emptier than usual, but as Michael C said, everything was open. I went to the Plaza Premium lounge and it was as busy as ever. You could not help yourself to food – there was a chef, but you could grab soft drinks. The bar was open as normal

I saw someone mentioned that the Gold supplementary cards have adopted the new card design similar to the Business Gold. I do wonder if this means a redesign will come for the main Gold cards (although I don’t see them rolling out the metal card without a fee increase)

    • Youllnever says:

That was me – I don’t think it was confirmed whether the new design is already on the main card as well – someone will need to request a replacement and confirm.

If it has the new design, It’ll be left to be seen whether or not this is temporary until the release a metal card/few increase, or if that isn’t happening here.

  • George B says:

Reposting my comment from yesterday –
The Snoop App article from January mentions that the app supports Nectar and Tesco Clubcard content – I’ve just started using the app but can’t see anything on there related to the schemes. Is the ‘support’ limited to giving suggestions related to your spending using a BA card or shopping at Sainsbury’s, or does it more actively track these schemes?

  • NutJuice says:

BA Edinburgh lounge rn (finally), not busy at all. Food and drink offering basically the same as before, as in quite limited. Staffed counter service only, more than friendly but not quite efficient.
