The HfP chat thread – Sunday 18th July

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

You might want to think twice before signing up for any The Economist deals in future?
Or maybe your ?BLM agenda will have you running for a subscription

    https://www.rt.com/news/529203-italy-team-white-racism/

    • Rui N. says:

Yes, I’m sure Putin propaganda from RT is the way to go!

    • Yolo says:

Thanks for the tip, I’ve cancelled my subscription. Can I make a contribution to your Save the Boomers campaign instead?

      • Rui N. says:

@Yolo, instead of that we all should just watch GB News ranting about cancel culture after cancelling one of their own presenters (I won’t say he was fired for not supporting racists) and their no2 content guy (for the crime of wanting a news channel to be about news). GB news together with Putin’s RT and we are good to go.

        • Harrier25 says:

          Oh dear, GB News!! 🙄

        • Rui N. says:

@Harrier25, what’s not to like about a channel that on its opening night had a guy who lives in France ranting on how proud GB News is to be based in the UK?

          • Harrier25 says:

In my opinion, which not everyone will agree with, just about everything is not to like regarding GB News, right down to the cheap logo which looks like it’s been designed by a far right-wing movement.

    • Harry T says:

I always base my opinion on an article after reading an article about the article, rather than the article. It’s more meta that way 😊

      • Rui N. says:

And one that says that only white people can be considered Italians at that. But clearly not even RT read the Economist’s article (maybe they are waiting on another Avios promo!), they just read the snippet on Twitter and made a “news” piece about that and about other people that also didn’t read the article said on Twitter!

        • Lord Doncaster says:

Are you overheating Rui? Best dunk your head in a bucket of cold water.

      • meta says:

@Harry T +1 three times removed from the original is the way to go.

      • bazza says:

No, i didn’t read the original article. As far as i can see you have to pay for it?
And i don’t want to put money in stupid people’s pockets.

You didn’t disagree with the article though did you?

If you don’t like RT then plenty of others sources are taking exception to the stupidity of this even if your not!

        • Rui N. says:

Commenting on stuff you didn’t read. Yes, that’s make it much better.

      • The Savage Squirrel says:

“I always base my opinion on an article after reading an article about the article, rather than the article. It’s more meta that way 😊”

I double-checked, really hoping that Meta had made this comment 😀

    • Newbie says:

BLM agenda? You must be one of those harassing Rashford, Sancho and Saka.

      • bazza says:

No, i don’t use twitter and i don’t watch football. I was only aware of rashFord out of these 3 before the tournament

Accusing me of racism because i don’t agree with u? Nice!

        Liberal at its best!

        • Ben W says:

Some of these posts almost make me wonder if the Russian Troll Factories are working overtime.

  • Sam says:

Scoot (SQ’s low cost subsidiary) awarded 168 take off and landing slots for Winter season. I.e 4x weekly. Interesting…

    • Sam says:

      Gatwick.

    • Andrew says:

      Scoot?

Why would you name an airline after slang term for the runs, or the way that a dog with worms drags its bottom.

Or worse, the 1990s tech flop.

A few of us did some PT work for them in the late 1990s in their Oxford offices. £2.5Bn value in 2000, a perfect example of market hype. For some reason, the fact that a high proportion of the calls to the 0800 number were lonely people looking to chat or dirty old men asking “are you wearing stockings” were missed from the value driving investor spiel. Business sold for £5M in 2001.

    • Lord Doncaster says:

Long haul no frills? Where has that launched and failed several times previously…

      • marcw says:

SCOOT has been going on for almost 10 years already. They do both long haul and short haul – doing well so far. Their model works.

    • Lady London says:

Thanks for that one Sam. Got an idea their flights even go as far as Australia…

      • Sam G says:

It actually makes a bit of sense, SQ frames are very premium heavy which might not be appropriate whilst business travel is reduced so a few Scoot flights could work well to add in a bunch of economy seats. They carry SQ codes so you can connect onwards to either Scoot or SQ flights.

Wouldn’t fancy it down the back but the ScootPlus is doable if the price is right, I’ve done Athens and Berlin. No IFE though so BYOD!

The other thing they might be doing is fifth freedom , they’re starting Berlin-Athens . Not sure where from though. Dubai?

    • John says:

Used them 4 years ago Hong Kong to Singapore. £39 each business class. £1.79 to upgrade to pick your own “luxury food menu”.
      Brand new plane.
Compare it to BA/Virgin premium economy seat.

      • Lord Doncaster says:

So comparable to Cathay’s short haul Asian Business Class seat?

        • Sam G says:

Yes pretty much. Premium Economy basically with low co food and pay for wine

  • Yorkieflyer says:

So Boris and his head prefect aren’t going to self isolate then, a Barnard Castle moment methinks

  • Dave says:

Just got back from Barbados – a lovely trip & thanks Rob and co for the suggestions. We stayed at Fairmont, would really recommend. Accor platinum completed. Travel felt very safe & people out here take it very seriously. Weather, stunning.

    • VickyTM says:

Glad you had a good time Dave. Do you have to wear masks on the beach there at the moment? Thanks

    • Will says:

Not self isolating then self isolating just a day before “freedom day” ie the end to legal restrictions which has transpired to be a month late, legal restrictions on travel remain and a legal obligation to self isolate remains.

I’m in favour of a cautious approach but they do love setting themselves up for having to eat their hats.

  • VickyTM says:

Sorry to ask again, but posted this yesterday but didn’t get an answer…
Looking for some advice on a Virgin Atlantic redemption booking please. I have a return redemption flight booked to LAX that I booked in the half point sale.
    1) Am I able to cancel the outbound but keep the inbound? If I do that, will I have to pay the difference in points?
    2) It’s also highly likely that they will cancel the outbound. If they do that, Can I keep the inbound? Am I able to move the LHR-LAX leg to after the LAX-LHR leg?

    Many Thanks

    • Mikeact says:

I would call them personally…rather than some second hand information.

      • VickyTM says:

Yeah I get that, and I will ultimately have to call them – was just hoping to avoid listening to Bittersweet Symphony on loop for 2 hrs…
        No worries

        • Memesweeper says:

          WhatsApp is a decent alternative

        • James says:

Good news! I rang last week, they have updated the soundtrack. 4 other songs now 😁

  • Paul says:

My families Global Health Cards arrived yesterday. Dear god I hope I never have to take it out in public. The background is an enhanced colour Union Flag. Simply ghastly and probably as effective as Johnson handling of Covid crisis.

    • Yorkie Aid says:

Wow, they sound fantastic. I better order ours now then. Thanks for the tip.

    • Lord Doncaster says:

Wow they sound much more exciting than the boring design plastered on the EHIC. Duly ordered. Thanks for the tip 😁

Roll on the driving licence redesign

    • Anuj says:

This government seems to be forcing inappropriate nationalism down our throats. More of an American idea to blindly love your country to that extent

      • Lord Doncaster says:

Doesn’t Von der Leyen wear a face mask emblazoned with the EU stars and always have a few EU flags in the background for her speeches?

    • Mike says:

Paul – thanks for highlighting this, I will order one immediately sounds like a really patriotic design

      • Dave1985 says:

I’m a proper patriot who holidays in the U.K.

        Do you?

        🇬🇧

  • Mel TS says:

Just wanted to say thank you to those who gave me advice on booking flights to Nairobi next year. Debated waiting for a sale, but we have fixed dates and found an ok price so just went for it. Thanks again ( and pretty much can guarantee another sale announced on Monday now)

  • Marc says:

I’ve a question about the UK Virgin credit card – I have the free card but would like the paid for card. Can you have both or should I close the free card and re-apply for the paid card?
    Any help would be great.

    • Optimus Prime says:

You can’t have both at the same time.

    • Travel Strong says:

It will reject you if you use all the same details… But use a different email address, and you might just come away with both! (Not tested for a while so please report back!)

    • Harry T says:

You can theoretically upgrade to the paid card but it involves closing the free card, applying for the paid card and being rejected, then calling up to have the rejection over turned. At least, this is what they told me last time I wanted to downgrade (presume it works the same way the other way).

    • Sandgrounder says:

If you apply for the other product sometimes your application will be accepted. It worked for me.
