Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Does anyone know if the 70k Plat referral still exists? If so, does anyone have a link?

    Please and thanks! 🙂

  • Anthony says:

Has anyone had the 750 Tesco Clubcard points awarded for a Hotel.com booking? And did you actually check in?

  • cinereus says:

    Re VS 241 voucher.

    1. Is it possible to book a cash flight, upgrade to the next class using miles and then use the 241 for a second ticket in the higher class?

    2. In your article you say “All card holders can now use their voucher to upgrade a cash or mileage Premium ticket to Upper Class. There must be reward availability showing in Upper Class.”

Unlike the other two options there is no mention of taxes and fees. Is this correct?

    • Gary says:

      1. Wouldn’t be surprised if you could as VS vouchers open to interpretation. Have 4 upper seats booking, and CSA suggested charging flying club miles for primary account holder and deduct 3 “companion” vouchers. it was a 4 for 1 booking essentially!
      2. Taxes and charges for cabin travelling in will be due for all passengers.

      • cinereus says:

Re 2, so you’re saying Rob was wrong when he said no additional taxes/fees?

        • Rob says:

Obviously any sort of cabin change would incur additional taxes and fees.

          • cinereus says:

Then why, in that article, did you mention it every time for examples 1 and 2 but never for example 3?

  • Niall says:

Apologies if I have missed this, but does anyone know how long the 70k Amex referral offer is likely to stick around?

    • Ste C says:

doesn’t show an end date on my view

      • Niall says:

        Nor with mine.

My friend thinks they cancelled early July 19 (and so it has been 2 years) but isn’t 100%. She has long since destroyed the card and can’t login to the site. Any ideas on how to check?

        • Niall says:

Sorry to answer my own question. Called the platinum number and they confirmed that if she calls, name, dob and address will be enough for my friend to find out from them when the card was cancelled.

        • gareth says:

Ask on the chat function or call

          • Niall says:

No chat without login I think is the issue with that. I was surprised you could call too without the card as I’m always asked for the last 5 digits… but I was assured she can call.

        • Rob says:

Ring Amex up, not a problem for them.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

I’ve had the gold offer for over 2 months and still not showing any end date

      • Rob says:

If you click on the referral link itself the recipient sees, IIRC, 7th September.

  • David says:

I’m on holiday and I’ve just realised I have some spend left on the Amex Platinum £175 offer which expires today. Does anyone know if buying something on Waitrose Online today and choosing a delivery slot for later in the week will work, or will the Amex transaction be dated on the day of delivery. Or am I just safer treating myself to something for the Selfridges website? Any other suggestions for how to use the credit and be confident of being charged today?

    • Tracey says:

Not sure if your offer has any restrictions, but if it doesn’t then you could top up an Amazon balance fairly instantly.

      • David says:

It’s the one that has to be spent at Waitrose, Selfridges or Harvey Nichols and I believe online gift cards are excluded (which would have been the easiest option).

    • Harry T says:

Buying a Harvey Nichols gift card online works but not a Selfridges one. Double check the Waitrose one works online and not just in store.

      • Harry T says:

If you have the selfridges plus delivery or whatever it’s called, dispatch and charging your card is fairly rapid.

        • Kevin C says:

Yes I left this until last minute but bought an outdoor pizza oven with Selfridges Plus yesterday. It got charged to card (as pending) and will be delivered in two hours.

          • David says:

Thanks for everyone’s feedback. Have bought an overpriced polo shirt from Selfridges. Fingers-crossed it charges today.

          • TGLoyalty says:

If you don’t like it you can return it Instore for a gift card too

  • Bojo the clown says:

    Sorry BETA variant

  • Gary says:

Traveling to Balearics. OH is EU/UK dual national but vaccinated in UK. Myself & dependents all UK passport & Uk vaccinated. Is there any advantage of utilising EU passport on Spanish PLF or might create complication as OH has no EU vaccine certificate?

    • Harry T says:

The process is very easy with a UK passport and UK proof of vaccinations. Did it myself yesterday as a fully vaccinated in the UK Brit. Gf had PCR and UK passport – also no issues.

  • Dave1985 says:

“ They were *phoned*. It’s a crime to go out.”

Fair enough. Tough luck then innit?
