Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Sunday 18th July

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Steve Not as tiresome as all the one-liners about beardy, bendy, che ect
Mostly just saying did you do this. did you get that, I did, I didn’t, I’m waiting
it might, it might not, we’ll have to wait n see. or not, it might work, mine did, mine didn’t, I tried this or that or the other lol
endless rubbish, but of course my rubbish might be someone’s interesting conversation
Come back Anna I Iov you, I’ll marry you or your OH ?
If you haven’t gone Mornin Anna

    • SteveJ says:

That’s kind of my point. Many find the Che/Bendy stuff useful, many do not. Many may find Anna popular/valued, many may not. Sweeping generalisations that topic or person a, b or c are “valued” is just opinion disguised as fact.

  • Andrew says:

Me being one of the “other 11 Andrews”. My twopenneth worth is that life’s too short to swipe, goad, react etc. For the most part, this is a friendly community that helps one another and we should do all we can to protect and foster that.

Equally, I would imagine Rob and Rhys have far more rewarding things to do (including furthering the journalism of HfP and hopefully enjoying the sunshine) and could do with spending less time wielding a referee whistle.

  • Annabel says:

Morning. Can anyone tell me if I can use my Avios to book an American airlines flight from Hawaii to Las Vegas? Doing a search on BA doesn’t seem to bring up any flights at all. However on the American Airlines search there are air-miles flights available. Is it something that is available to us but only by telephone? Thanks

    • Chris Heyes says:

Annabel I’ve used AA loads of times to transfer across USA
I’ve always had to ring BA though, to use Avios. AA release there seats at differant dates to BA though and mostly suitcases have to be booked in at AA when arrive in USA
      That’s annoying

      • Mikeact says:

And don’t forget you have to pay for luggage using Avios on internal AA flights. If you have Delta/Partners miles to use, then luggage is free.

        • Chris Heyes says:

Mikeact Yes that’s what I was meaning when I said booked in, in USA I meant paid for as BA cant/wont book n pay luggage

    • BJ says:

I don’t know if that is an AA route but you cold go to LAX and then take hire car or bus. LAX will have larger aircraft on the route I’d expect and possibly with full international cabins so better products. As always for both Las Vegas and Hawaii, there will likely be lots of inexpensive revenue flights so check them out before using avios.

      • Doc says:

Normal aircraft that ply the LAX-Hawaii with AA are the A321 with no flat bed seats but recliners.
If you want larger aircraft with flatbed seats, look at the DFW to Hawaii routes. Normally a Boeing 777. Obviously COVID could change all of this.

    • Louise K says:

There needs to be saaver award tickets to book with Avios on BA.

    • Memesweeper says:

Yes. Be sure to check the availability you see on aa.com is the cheapest rate — that’s the only one BA can book. Consider a change in LAX, this opens up more flights.

    • 1ATL says:

Remember you can also use Alaska Airlines too now in order to get to Hawaii from the West Coast.

    • AJA says:

Is the route a direct flight? If it isn’t then I think you need to search for the individual segments and then phone BA to book to have it on one PNR.

  • Barraclough says:

I don’t know the size of the readership of these daily chat columns but it must be large. I’d respectfully challenge the assertion that the arguments (and in some cases potshots) at others including the “big characters” is “why we come here everyday”. That may be the case for a tiny few regular contributors but this public chat facility has a readership who dip in and out, including newbies, looking for tips and advice on travel, rewards and points, and not for the personal criticism, put downs, and bitching!

  • Luke says:

Anyone had any issues with the 6k AMEX additional cardholder application? Filled it out using the link in Rob’s article last week, haven’t heard anything so went on the live chat yesterday and they couldn’t see anything so have told me to call the new accounts team…no points or card have arrived so far.

    • BJ says:

My dad added me to his Gold, took 8 days for it to be confirmed.

  • BJ says:

@Andrew … Both Debs and Anna will enjoy that 🙂

  • JustLetMeFlyAgain says:

I’ve got the ARCC Amex (the clear one) and the blue (non-premium) BA Amex.

Am I eligible for any sign up bonuses on new cards, I seem to remember I can get something on the plat card but could be wrong

  • Ash says:

    Lol
