The HfP chat thread – Saturday 17th July

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I believe mark (little m) is currently at Rijeka searching for his (lost) luggage

    (I’m joking 😁)

  • Andrew says:

Anecdote – don’t you mean “data point”? 😂

  • Paul says:

Anybody any experience of purchasing a car via Cazoo or Cinch?

    • Richie says:

Read all the details about their guarantee if there’s a problem with the car. The trustpilot reviews are also interesting.

    • SteveJ says:

Yes, purchased from Cinch. Car was as described and happy with it. Didn’t have to use the 14 day returns option so can’t comment

  • Barraclough says:

This is by far away the best travel, rewards and points site and I’ve learnt so much from very knowledgeable people who contribute regularly, not to mention the outstanding work over the years by Rob, Rhys, and others.

Personally I don’t care what people want to ask or discuss because if there is a topic that doesn’t interest me or is repetitive I simply move on! There are a few grumpy’s though who don’t see it that way! Albeit, many give excellent advice and commentary but hate discussion of Beardy, Che and Solihull. Yet despite such references taking up what must be way less that 1% of the total column inches there is always someone complaining, whether it’s about opportunities to make points or the use of code names.

Let’s live and let live and recognise HfP is not for the exclusive use of regulars who read it ten times a day! There are newbies here too with other commitments dipping in who may not have time to read HfP in detail every day. The irony is also that Beardy, Che, et al is at least on topic – the collection of rewards and points – whereas some regulars seem to love talking about everything but!

Rob takes a relaxed view of the topic range, and that’s good. So for those who complain I respectfully ask you to recognise the diversity of the readership in terms of knowledge, availability of time, and varied interests.

The issue with IHG card etc is that people put in a lot of effort to find these routes and are then not happy when the secret is shared. Rob never mentioned IHG in atleast the last 6 years but he knew the “secret” i bet his surprised with how open people have become

      • VerdantBacon says:

Once Curve become popular on here, it wouldn’t be long before everyone tried whatever card they had. We’ve even see people ask if they could use a card to pay itself off via Curve.

The problem is not the secret getting shared, the problem is how incredibly easy it is to MS with Curve and Revolut and just how long this route has lasted.

Usually MS is more cumbersome and doesn’t last as long, or lasts a while but is a secret held by the few that try instead of ask.

Eventually Curve and Revolut MS will die off, the conversation will disappear and all that will be left is people reminiscing about easier times.

      Well said

    • Jill ( Kinkell) says:

Clearly I’ve got up too late and missed some posts, but seems that’s just as well today. Totally agree @Barraclough. HfP is my ‘go to’ breakfast reading . Skip, gloss over what’s not interesting, laser like scrutiny over what’s relevant and interesting. Love the fact you are all so patient and helpful in your responses to ( repetitive ). queries. Keep it up ,posters

  • Chelseafi says:

My return flight only is now via BA CityFlyer economy end of month from Minorca what do I get in the way of F&B never done before, so any advice for flight thank you.

    • MilesOnPoint says:

Presume you mean in Economy on CityFlyer? pre-COVID it was usually a wrap/Sandwich or potentially a cold boxed salad for longer routes to/from LCY (had a nice Mackerel salad on flight to Florence).

Booze is available for free and includes standard spirits (Gordon’s gin, Smirnoff Red, Johnny Walker red), red & White wine along with beers/soft drinks.

That being said, I’m not sure what current state of play is and you may just get the standard crisps and water as Heathrow eco now does.

      • Memesweeper says:

My last BA CF a few weeks ago was a biscuit and a drink. On a longer route you may do better. It will be free of charge.

  • patrick C says:

The usefulness of travel insurance really depends where you’re from what you take and where you travel.
A ryanair handluggahe tourist within the EU staying at cheap hotels has less need for it…

  • Mikeact says:

You have to accept that an open forum like this, or others, attracts both the good and bad. The exception is probably Flyertalk where comments usually remain on topic.

    • Craig says:

A forum? Where you can have threads and edit and stuff? Now there’s an idea.

      • Mikeact says:

Of course, I use the term very loosely on here but not for the regulars !

    • Harunn says:

The ability to block some of the people who post over and over would be great!

  • Andrew says:

With the news of the rules on returning from France, the government has quietly slipped out a fourth traffic light: Amber+ which I would expect to see apply to more countries at short notice as a half way house to red status.

    • Craig says:

Green, green watch, amber, amber plus and red. What’s confusing about that?

      • ChrisBCN says:

Red amber green is no longer fit for purpose – I propose red, scarlet, pink, dark orange, amber, emerald, green as the way forward.

        • Lady London says:

The trouble is, other countries do just that and on those, the UK remains dark red, Netherlands just went orange after 2 weeks of nightclubbing fromba much lower base of infection than the UK, and the rest of Europe is Bright Green. Oh, except Spain and Portugal which have been receiving British holidaymakers for the last month and are now scarlet red.

          • Tony1 says:

Cases in Spain are growing exponentially. Spain will be Amber ++ soon

( France and Spain can not go Red as there are not enough hotel rooms in the UK for the return traveller – I guess )

          • meta says:

EU also does regional, so within country you can have green, orange, red, dark red.

    • LessCleverAndrew says:

Yup. Just been caught by that as was due to return from France, via Geneva – on August 1st. Will be cancelling my trip now.
