The HfP chat thread – Friday 16th July

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

BP / M&S offer (£10 statement credit for £30 spend).

Did a bit of testing and used this across 4 cards successfully.
    Seems to be very flexible.
£45 fuel purchase split across 2 cards OK. Amazon gift cards split across 2 cards was also OK (One of the cards was used for £15 fuel and £15 Amazon gift card).
Took 6 days for the statement credits to appear.

  • Aston100 says:

Oh, almost forgot – I managed to get a £5 statement credit applied for a place that was showing on the Amex shop small map but refused to accept it when I went to pay.
This goes against my previous experiences and those described here by others too.

Maybe they just loved my accent.

    • MJ says:

I think a lot of this is how generous you are on the phone – I’ve had a load of points credited instead of the offer.

  • BJ says:

With regard to the new amex additional cardholder offer with spend target bonuses, has it been established yet if we can take advantage of this offer for one card only or for all three cards?

  • Patrick Cold says:

Does anyone have any clever ideas as to how/where I should purchase an Iphone12 pro max please?

    • idrive says:

John Lewis offers 2 yrs warranty, where about are you? or if you want to use you Nectar Argos/Ebay, do you want a new one outright or pay monthly?

      • Patrick Cold says:

I`m looking to buy new outright, I live in Ascot. Many thanks for the swift response.

    • Tim says:

As idrive says, depends what you’re looking for! If it’s a really cheap 2yr contract with larger up front and smaller monthly cost then mobiles.co.uk/Carphone Warehouse are good places to start. Otherwise maybe use Nectar, or find someone who knows someone who works at Apple / use educational/corporate portals for Apple.com

      • Patrick Cold says:

Many thanks. No educational discount on the `phone unfortunately.

    • John says:

I just purchased from mobiles.co.uk using Amex. Paid 639.99 (choice of colour) and wanted to remain on Vodafone so purchased £23 a month plan (unlimited texts/calls and 18GB) total £1192 for 2 years.
Vodafone wanted £79.99 a month for same package: £1919.76
      Great phone!

    • Anuj says:

If you have the cash I would just buy on eBay either, brand new or unsealed brand new. The phone is several months old now and you’d be losing a big chunk of the money instantly

      • Idrive says:

First of all i would figure out your needs in terms of sim card. If you do not need 5g nowadays you find amazing deals, i recently purchased Lebara on £6.95 for 10 gb / jnlimited calls/sma (runs on vodafone) therefore buying a new sealed phone on ebay from a reputable (commercial seller) would be a good start to own the phone outright at a discounted price. My GF bought one sealed from ebay after she got hers stolen and was perfect. Now with the new models approaching in 2/3 months you do not want to pay the full price anyway.
Without starting the new conversation about tariffs and operators, if you need/want 5g then it could be a better deal to have a pay monthly but in that case i would make sure i can pay with amex rather than direct debit.
Coming back on the hot topic of insurance, mobile this time..things can and do happen, a good priced one seems loveitcoverit (on Axa) with lower excess amounts. I got mine via curve anyway but if you buy outright and spend some cash, you may want it, available on a monthly basis(cover loss, theft and damage) while Apple care plus only covers damage but a very low excess (i am a screen breaker and got it as well).
        Hope this helps!

What’s the best ride hailing app to use in BCN? If any

    • Optimus Prime says:

      Cabify?

      • Gtellez says:

Cabify for sure, best service and price. Avoid regular taxis, most likely rude driver, dirty car and more expensive.

400 Avios in Iberia Plus for first trip!

    • ChrisBCN says:

Much of a muchness…. Free Now is the one I use, but often easier to hail from the street if there are taxis around. Rude taxi drivers and dirty taxis exist in most large taxi firms around the world… Or take the bus if its practical, more legroom and super cool aircon!

Plaza Premium website states LHR T5 departures lounge is reopening Mon 19 Jul, opening hours will be 0600 – 1700 daily.

  • Ed says:

Picking up on the new claridges / Amex offer mentioned earlier this am, has anyone had success on previous claridges offers in triggering the offer on f&b spend without a room booking?

    • Andrew says:

They did a specific F&B offer in the autumn (spend £75 get £25 I think) so the POS must be set up separately – but worth a try and if you get £100 back then bonus.

  • Nathan says:

Hi can anyone here recommend a place in Mexico City to purchase a Covid test in order to board a flight back to the U.K.
I believe it’s just a lateral flow test needed in order to board the flight.

    Many thanks
