Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Thursday 15th July

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Well, they won’t be going bust anytime soon then. Somewhat reassuring for those that like to top them up with £££.

But SoftBank have backed a gazillion total flops, so I guess this means nothing long term if their underlying business isn’t strong. And IMHO it isn’t.

      • MD says:

Completely agree, especially about SoftBank! Seriously dodgy. But it means we can keep rinsing it for a while longer at least anyway. 😁

Overpaying Energy supplier with AMex Q

I have a credit of £1k after deposits over the last few days.

I intend to withdraw said amount and then repeat the deposits.

Anyone have any experience of any issues with the timing \frequency of this?

It would be a great quick way to get to the £6K spend on our 2 Amex’s

    Supplier is Igloo

    • TGLoyalty says:

So you’re are asking how much can you take the mick before they say no more?

£1k over a few days and want to repeat? sounds like you’re gonna be on thin ice

      • Youllnever says:

Can’t believe people are actually asking this.

        • Blindman says:

You must be new to this site then!.

This is one of the lesser dodgy loopholes I’ve seen on here.

      • Blindman says:

        My thoughts exactly TBHO

Just wondered if anyone had tried and failed :0

Don’t want to cook this goose.

    • Jonathan says:

They’ll refund to your card in this situation, they’re not stupid. The only way to play this in the medium term is to build up credit using Amex then reduce direct debit to negligible amount.

      • Blindman says:

        @Jonathon

        That’s my intention.

DD is reduced to minimum and the £1K is earning 3% interest.

        • Tim says:

I recently topped up bulb by £1k a couple of weeks prior to switching. Credit balance paid back to current account, result.

          • Rob says:

Same happened to my referral credits when we moved house – put new contract in my wife’s name.

  • Grant Blackshire says:

Hi all – having a bit of difficulty finding a complete answer here so wondered if you might know? I’m travelling Alitalia in business between LHR and FCO next month with the family and wanted to know which lounges (if any) I have access to in Terminal 2?

  • HAK says:

Has anyone been on the Eurostar recently? How is it looking in terms of security times etc?

    • Nick Burch says:

Basically no queue for security, main queue is before checkin when Eurostar staff check all your documents. Trains are pretty empty so not that many people to get through compared to usual. e-gates are switched off and they’re stamping all British passports, but it’s fairly quick, no worse than normal.

  • Sarah says:

I know this is really down to personal preference but just wanted to know what others thoughts were as to best value for points and what would be best holiday for family of 3 with 14 year old.
We can potentially do one of the following:
April – Mexico City / Cancun business class both ways
June – New York – first one day / business return
June – Sydney – business one way /WTP return.

    • Craig says:

I’d avoid Sydney, I can’t see there being much movement on restrictions for a considerable time. Not sure if it’s you thing but have a look at the cruises out of NYC, it would give you a city break followed by some Caribbean fun.

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

New York is likely the worst value in £/point but likely the best for you … even a 14yo can’t complain that New York is boring 😀 .

  • Jonny says:

I understand BA have a policy that you can call up on same day as your flight and change to another flight for no cost, subject to availability. Does this policy apply to Avios bookings?

    • Pete M says:

I am not sure on the Avios question, but I would recommend trying to change it on the day (after midnight) via MMB. I’ve had a horrid time trying to convince the Indian call centre a couple of weeks back this is genuinely a thing…

    • Memesweeper says:

      Not applicable to Avios bookings.

    • Jonathan says:

Same Day Change is a feature of short haul Economy + bookings & you can do it online without calling as long as you haven’t checked in. Very useful if you’re solo & flexible as there’s normally at least 1 seat free on every flight.

Avios bookings can be changed for free on day if there’s Avios availability using the current BWC policy.

  • Mark says:

Anyone knows what are the rules of entering France from Spain, having been in the UK in the last 14 days? Don’t see any statement on the link below that counts the past 14 days too (unlike some other countries). Asking this because if I were to go directly to France from UK, I would have to do an antigen test, but not the case if I were to go from Spain.

  • Graeme says:

Thinking about the Algarve for Christmas. We’ve Dubai booked but who knows!! Some lovely well priced villas on vrbo and cheapish flights. Any advice on weather or things to do around Vilamoura. Canaries flights are silly money and Portugal seems next best.

    • Rui N. says:

Weather: cold, rain and wind (but a few degrees warmer than Southeast England).
Things to do? Drink beer and see what a ghost town looks like in the rain?!
