The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 14th July

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Currently at Bournemouth Airport. No food / drink or WHSmith open after security. Duty Free is open and selling tepid bottles of water. No water fountain. There is a small cafe before security. I would usually find a Ryanair flight bearable if I’d eaten and had a large glass of wine before boarding. On the positive side flight was only £7.99. About £100 return with front row seat and a 10kg bag in the cabin.

  • PK says:

Che top-ups from Solihull failing for any amount greater than £1500. Is this something new?
I suspect Solihull has implemented 300/500/700 type of cap on Che top-ups, but I could be wrong.

    • Swiss Jim says:

Mine are failing far lower than this. Used to put £000s through every week. Now struggle to get £500 through day sometimes. Heh ho, part of the MS game. Might come back, might not. Other opportunities still out there…

    • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

Yes – the £1,500 cap has been a place for the last two weeks or so for me. It seems to be a weekly amount too 🙁

      • thehornets says:

Not for me. Had a problem a few weeks ago, but topped up more than £1,500 today.

Hi, I’m looking for all-inclusive, very comprehensive travel insurance for Greece for double vaccinated travellers.

I know Battleface covers medical treatment for Covid, but nothing else (e.g. if slammed into quarantine). Any ideas?

    • Yorkieflyer says:

I don’t think any such thing exists

    • Rory says:

Check out SafetyWing. I’ve used them before and were great, and pretty reasonable. Not sure how comprehensive it is though.

  • Mycity says:

Email from Virgin buy points up to 60% bonus, actually when I go into my account it’s up to 70% bonus.

  • Backpacker says:

Hello all, first flight in 18 months (Spain – I am double vaccinated) and worried that I might have missed some step somewhere in the enlessly changing restrictions – Do I need anything other than the below 5 steps?

    Leave tomorrow:
    1) Take Certificate showing double vaccination
    2) Spanish locator form – fill out & print QR code
    Return 20 July:
    3) Take a covid test before return
    4) Book & Pay for Day 2 Covid-19 Travel tests
    5) Complete a passenger locator form – on the way back only.

Is that all I need to do, is there some additional form I have to complete?
Don’t want to get turned away either end, thanks in advance!

Anyone know a Reasonably-priced place in Barcelona that can do the covid test for me to fly back?

    • N says:

That’s all you need to do. Have your return test ready to show at the airport at check in.

Eurofins Megalab has an antigen testing centre in Barcelona airport which will do you a test there, but the queues are often rubbish. Get a Vueling/BA discount from Unilabs (30eu) or Quiron (40eu) here: https://www.vueling.com/en/passengers/test-pcr-covid

      • Backpacker says:

Thank you so much all, and especially the great tips for the testing in Barcelona!

    • N says:

Alternatively buy a ProjectScreen test before you leave and use it for your return test: https://web.projectscreen.co.uk/add-to-cart?product=uk-lfd-fit-to-fly-arrival&tag=virgin

    • Travel Strong says:

Understand the trepidation – it’s not a nice feeling approaching the gate wondering if everything is correct, with no time to resolve it if not!

To help with this – go to bag drop as soon as you get to the airport, even if you have no bags, and they will do all the checks there rather than waiting until it’s time to board (makes boarding quicker then too).

      • meta says:

Flying BA? Spain is on the Verifly list. I would also upload everything to Verifly and take away all the stress at the airport. They will verify and you just show your Verifly pass to BA check in staff. BA will actually have everything in their system so it will be a breeze.

    • BJ says:

      Which vaccine did you get?

  • Mark1 says:

Will the HSBC Premier WEMC travel insurance cover me for travels after 19th July?

    • JDB says:

That will depend on your destination and the FCDO advice in place when you start your journey (for all the non pre-journey elements).

  • Sam says:

Double vaxxed and wanting to do a last minute trip next week. Would love to hear some suggestions of destinations that is more feasible for a solo trip by myself. Preferably not the major cities like Rome, Barcelona, south of Spain, Porto, Lisbon, Faro etc as been to them.

    • Rob says:

Get down to Dubrovnik, probably only Summer you will avoid mass overcrowding (if they let you in).

      • Princess says:

from Dubrovnik you can then move easily to Kotor in Montenegro. Kotor bay is lovely and if you like hiking you have several option in Montenegro.

      • Joe says:

Or cross over to Bosnia and Herzegovina for a beautiful and cheap (but off the beaten track) break!

  • Martha says:

Hi there. A flight for 8am tomorrow morning . When is the last I can cancel/receive voucher? Problem is it’s part of a booking of a few and only one wants to cancel and I can’t do it online or get through to BA in UK.
