We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Vox pop: what are the chances of Thailand opening up to tourists in December? (by open, I mean you would be able to freely travel between Bangkok and, say, Phuket providing you are double-vaxxed on entry. So, no quarantine or sandbox rules to put up with. I have a holiday booked for late December but starting to think a Plan B is needed!

    • KellyK says:

We are booked to fly to Bangkok on 3 December, 241, same dates as last year which didn’t happen ,looking at the Phuket sandbox mess I can’t see it happening.

      • Sam G says:

Agree. I’ve got November 2-4-1 to Bangkok and not expecting to go, even if they set up “corridor” flights to Phuket the risk of being carted off to state quarantine because you were on a flight with someone who tests positive is too high for my liking. COVID is only really relatively just taking hold in these countries (Indonesia Vietnam etc as well) and their vaccination rate is low and pretty slow, I can’t see them being in a fit state for tourists until well into next year, booked my winter sun in Lanzarote instead!

        • Thywillbedone says:

Thanks folks. Yeah, looking like a real mess. Shame as I have locked in some great hotel rates – but the go/no go on some of those rates is 60 days out.

I’ve written off alternative Asia destinations for obvious reasons. Was looking at Mexico but Cancun/Playa rates over Christmas are nose bleed territory (at least for good spots). Hadn’t considered the Canaries to be fair, will have a look.

        • Lady London says:

the issue with Phuket has been not just carted off to state quarantine… but carted off to state quarantine…. that you suddenly have to pay for

    • iSub says:

Low I’m afraid – I’ve a postponed Scuba Diving holiday pushed back to April 2022 that I’m worried about, especially given the recent news that the Sinovac vaccine they have mostly used is not very effective against the delta variant and they are starting to use AZ as a booster. It feels like they are a way off opening up – that that is before you consider the amount of times they have messed up the sandbox concept in Phuket

Following on from a mention about cash advances appearing on credit reports yesterday, do those of you meeting Argentinian revolutionaries in Solihull at a bendy venue, get these reported as cash advances on your reports? (seeing as they attract interest so not treated as standard purchases)

Family return from amber country after 19 Jul. Both adults double jabbed +14, and child will be under 4 on date of return to UK so don’t need day 2 & 8 tests. So child still needs to isolate but adults can roam freely?

    • Rob says:

No, under 18’s get a free pass if parents vaccinated.

      • TGLoyalty says:

parent/guardian vaccination status doesn’t matter. all u18’s exempt

    • TGLoyalty says:

Under-18s will also no longer have to self-isolate. Children aged 10 and under will not have to take a test before departure for England, but will have to take a test on day two. Those aged four and under will not need to take any tests.

  • VickyTM says:

Just want to check something if I may…I believe that if I fly from the UK to Barbados, stay 14 days there and am fully vaccinated, I can then enter the USA and don’t need to self isolate. I know I need various tests etc, but in principal, is this correct?
Also, is it 14 full clear days, or can I arrive in the US on the 14th day?
    Many Thanks

    • Pete M says:

Yes – but believe you can only enter on day 15. The US only needs an antigen test to enter. I think quarantine regulations also vary by state, but are pretty difficult to enforce there.

    • Rory says:

I did this but with Mexico and left 14 full days, and entered the USA on day 15. Saying all that, not a single person ever checked…

      • VickyTM says:

Thanks, that’s great… Have given up on US borders opening anytime soon direct from UK 🙂

    • ready to fly says:

Important: the day you arrive in Barbados is day 0. You can enter the US on day 15. You will be denied boarding if you try to enter the US on day 14.

  • Jimmy says:

So VS have cancelled the return leg of a trip next month to MCO (understandable) and have offered the choice of a travel voucher or to rebook/reroute.

Thing is this was booked in the 50% off sale.

No mention of pricing at a higher rate of miles for the rebook but im a bit wary of that, would the travel voucher be a better option?

    Any advice?> Thanks in advance.

    • Anna says:

VS has cancelled so you are legally entitled to re-routing under EU261 at no extra cost – check out all the options thoroughly before committing to anything!

      • Chris Heyes says:

Anna Just rebooked USA for Easter London Denver, Denver Phoenix, same Hotels
Forced open Business seats (no Avios availability) as they was open for cash, 241 Voucher had run out by then but used as BA Cancelled bit cooler but less rain
All round satisfactory result even AA flight transferred over
Just not sure if knock Lake Powell on head ?

      • Jimmy says:

Thanks. Would that be the same even though it was only the inbound flight is cancelled? Is it too cheeky to go for next summer? In all honesty was thinking of cancelling anyway!

        • Chris Heyes says:

Jimmy it was only my outbound that was cancelled , but my 241 run out before April next year

          • Anna says:

I think Jimmy’s referring to his own cancellation! It should apply to both sectors as long as it’s all on one booking.

      • Jimmy says:

Thanks anna. Yes was referring to my flight. Yea it’s all on one booking so that’s good.

Is it allowed for me to rebook to next year though? June 2022?

    • Eugene says:

I rebooked HKG flights booked in the 50pct from next week to end of May. Zero extra points or cash costs.

  • Nigel W says:

Just checking, does paying Brighton with HK x Bendy still work?

  • Mark says:

Seen the rumours that USA are aiming for 6th sept opening for international travel? Any thoughts of this will happen? I know no one has a crystal ball just wondered

    • Mart says:

I’ve seen that date mentioned a few times ,but I wouldn’t rule anything in or out

    • Travel Strong says:

That date is based on ONE comment only, from their secretary of commerce, in an interview: “I’m hopeful that post-Labor Day we will see a nice uptick in business travel and international travel”. There is nothing more substantive than that as far as I am aware.
I was also tempted to book for mid-sep on the off-chance, but I haven’t done so yet.

  • Yorkieflyer says:

Guardian reporting that France may be put on the Red list, ministerial meeting underway and traffic light announcement due to today rather than tomorrow

    • TGLoyalty says:

So all hauliers will be put directly into hotel quarantine?

    • Dave says:

That makes no sense really. The delta variant is out of control here . France is at 45 cases per 100,000. What possible risk is there to the country for people returning/coming here?

    • DK says:

      France stayed amber

    • YC says:

Looks like update has been announced. No real drama with France and Spain appear to remain Amber
