How to donate your £120 Deliveroo credit from American Express Gold to charity

Yesterday we ran an article showing how you can spend your £10 per month of Deliveroo credit from the American Express Gold card to generate a small profit.

A reader pointed me in the direction of something I’d missed and which is substantially more useful to society as a whole.

You can donate your credit as part of Deliveroo’s ‘Full Life’ fundraising campaign, which aims to provide 1 million meals to families in need.

How to donate to Full Life via Deliveroo

On the home page of the Deliveroo app, you should see this tile:

If you don’t, simply type ‘Full Life’ into the search box.

You will end up on this page:

You can donate money to Full Life in the same way that you would order a standard meal. Select the £5 donation option and add it to your basket.

For reasons I don’t fully understand, there is a 1p delivery charge added but I can think we can treat this as negligible:

The £5.01 is charged to your American Express Gold card as usual:

American Express pays you £5 in cashback as long as you haven’t already used your 2 x £5 monthly credits. You are 1p down but someone else get a £5 meal.

PS. When you’ve made your donation, it is treated as a ‘real’ Deliveroo order so you get a delivery timeslot etc showing on your phone. Don’t worry, no-one and no food is turning up.

This is a fantastic option, thank you for pointing it out

  • CarpalTravel says:

This sounds great, if I understand right, Deliveroo will take food from certain retail partners and deliver to charities, who in turn then distribute to those in need. I don’t have the Gold card but would definitely do this, if I did. It is a top spot.

  • Andrew Mc says:

What am I doing wrong. Whenever I try to add my Amex Gold as a payment method it fails, saying “Incorrect card number entered. An unexpected error occurred.” Before anyone says it, yes, I am entering the correct card number! Can I use Google Pay to check out with my Amex, or will that not trigger the credit? Thanks.

    • CarpalTravel says:

Quite a few people said that in the other thread too. One did say they did it via Google Pay and personally I don’t see why that shouldn’t trigger it (as it’s not fronting it, unlike Curve etc..) but I am afraid I am just guessing. Perhaps try it once and see how it goes? Worst case scenario is you have donated £5.01 to charity.

      • John says:

Don’t want to be a downer and not sure exactly how it works but it’s more like you pay a restaurant £5 and they give away some food? I wonder if deliveroo takes their usual cut?

        • CarpalTravel says:

I did think about that, but aren’t they they ones providing the credits, via Amex? So they still have to pay their riders, supply the food, and effectively refund your payment, via Amex?

      • Harrier25 says:

No, I said yesterday that you need to go to the Deliveroo website using your browser if adding your payment method fails in the Deliveroo GooglePlay app.

    • Liam J says:

It works with Apple Pay for sure. Not personally tried Google Pay but I imagine it’s the same.

    • Toppcat says:

The credit still triggers if you use Google/Apple pay.

  • Mikeact says:

Shame it’s only on Gold…..of all the many cards they issue…I wonder how that decision was arrived at…

    • Harrier25 says:

I would think that it was only introduced to Gold as a sales pitch to make the £140 annual fee look more attractive. The same idea as introducing the Dell monthly credit to Platinum cards.

      • Rob says:

The Dell credit isn’t proving attractive in the UK. The US Dell website, where this offer has been running for a while, sells a lot of varied stuff including third party gift cards and you can use the credit easily. The UK Dell site is VERY thin.

Even buying stuff to eBay isn’t very easy because £50/£75 doesn’t give you much profit for your efforts, assuming you resell the item for £30/£50 and then pay postage and eBay fees, plus the time needed to order the item, write the listing and ship it.

  • Polly says:

Great use of the £5. Was actually costing us more to use it anyway, so wasn’t bothering. But this is such a worthy cause. And yes l hope they are not taking their usual % cut first. The project is worth funding, if you think how many of us on here will be donating. It will soon feed a lot of people.

  • Britbronco says:

Is it eligible for gift aid? (And UK tax rebate)

  • FCP says:

So presumably set up 1 account and gift £5 twice a month to use the credit?

    Better than not using it

  • Matthew David Bell says:

This is obviously a great option Rob, but from a cash flow maximizing perspective, I am guessing that you can choose the donate £1 option, twice a month, and generate a £96 profit in a year?
