The HfP chat thread – Friday 9th July

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Shepherd’s Bush BP £30 amex offer works on M&S giftcards, now have £300 worth of M&S giftcards.

  • Tim says:

    Data point #3,405,384:

Ordered 2x Qured tests yesterday for (potential) use later in year returning from US. Arriving via DPD despite selecting Royal Mail free delivery, on Monday before 11am.

  • Aston100 says:

Heading off to Wales for a couple of weeks at the end of the month.
Are masks going to be voluntary in that country?
I ask because I’m down to a couple of fabric ones and half a dozen disposables. Not sure if it is worth buying any more.

    • Peter K says:

Wales have typically been more cautious than England throughout the pandemic so far.
I’m pretty sure Mark Drakeford has said July 19th relaxation doesn’t apply to Wales but I haven’t double checked that.

    • Travel Strong says:

a couple of fabric ones and a half dozen disposables have lasted me 16 months 😂
But yes, drakeford will do continue things in Wales for longer than England, on political principal.

    • Anna says:

Hotels and other venues may well decide that mask-wearing is a condition of using their facilities for some time yet, so I’m hanging on to my masks!
Also they will be required on planes (and possibly in airports) for the foreseeable future.

      • Aston100 says:

Ah well, guess I’ll have to order a box of 50 disposables then.
They’d better be insisting on masks when I get over there.

        • Rimmingtown says:

It would take you years to get through 50, a packet of three will suffice for about two months

          • Aston100 says:

Yuck… don’t you throw them away after wearing?
For that matter, how often do you wash your pants?

          • Rimmingtown says:

I don’t know, ask your wife she does them for me 🙂

  • YC says:

Anyone able to share what details you get with a day 2 test from Collinson? Is it just a text/email to say its negative? Or does it include name, passport, etc. Looking to use this as proof of entry to Europe 2 days later as well

    • Rob says:

You get a full certificate which should do the trick – includes your passport details etc plus the necessary stamps and signatures.

    • Ikaz says:

I actually didn’t get a certificate as their digital signature on opencerts.io (where they upload the results) is not valid…

      • Ikaz says:

(That is for day 2 Collinson)

        • Rob says:

Collinson certs are stored as PDFs on their website collinsonassistance.com.

If you set up a log-in there you can see them.

          • YC says:

Thanks will probably give this a go. Much prefer in person than posting and waiting

  • den says:

Does anyone have experience of transiting through UK to USA as a UK passport holder? As in stayed in Europe for 14 days before travel to US to avoid the ban on anyone entering US who has been in UK in previous 14 days – does it apply to transit flights through Heathrow eg Helsinki to LHR to JFK, is this allowed or would be classed as being in UK?

    • stevenhp1987 says:

Would be banned from entry as you’ve been in UK.

Finland is part of Schengen so you would also be banned from entry to US if you stayed there.

You’d have to stay in a non-Schengen/UK/Ireland country and not transit through one on the way.

    • Liam says:

Most European countries are part of the US travel ban as well, so be careful there. However, note that transiting does count as being in a country in the eyes of the US, so you could not, for example, fly from Croatia (not included in the US bad) to the US via LHR.

  • Gary says:

Return to UK pre-departure self administered lateral flow test… Does anyone know how Prenetics verify identity/result before sending it out (seem vague on their website)? Or any provider whose result is not reliant on live appointments? Ideally would like to avoid as may get very busy for any live appointments in a few weeks.

    • Rich says:

When you register the test online you’re asked to choose ‘which picture does your result look like?’, then you submit a photo to verify. Didn’t work on Safari, OK on Chrome.

      • Gary says:

Thanks… Seems like a more efficient process compare to zoom consultations

  • Mrs_Fussy says:

FYI – used Express Test at Heathrow for PCR fit to fly test. Highly recommend, in and out in 10 mns and test received in 10 hours ( I paid for the normal service ). Paid £113 for 2 using BA code

  • Gothbe says:

Anyone having difficulty paying hmrc with curve today? I’ve tried several times and it’s hanging at the contacting card issuer page

    • QwertyKnowsBest says:

Had same problem in past. Was an HMRC web issue for me. Try clearing cookies/cache on your browser or use a different browser. That worked around for me.

      • Chas says:

That is brilliant – thank you! Had been using Safari, and even Chrome didn’t work. But I’ve just downloaded Firefox and that worked….

        • QwertyKnowsBest says:

Increasingly finding that I experience less website problems with Edge than Chrome, did not used to be that way.

    • Dr C says:

Yeah usually is the website try again tomorrow

    • Chas says:

      Yup – discussed on pages 1, 2 and 4!
