We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Will be double jabbed +14 days.

    My understanding is

    1. OK to visit Germany with no pre departure test or quarentine on arrival.

    2. On return to UK – no quarentine, no pre departure test ex Germant but need a day 2 test

    3. Isolate until day 2 negative test result received?

    Correct?

    Thanks

    • Sean says:

Cannot comment on entry requirements to Germany, but:

You do need a pre-departure test from Germany and a day 2 test.

    • YC says:

      My current understanding:

      2. All international flights into the UK will require pre departure
      3. Don’t need to isolate on return in Amber/Green (and vaccinated) just need to do day0-2 test. So you can live ur life as per normal unless test positive

      • BrightonReader says:

        Thanks.

So I could use a Qured test for entry to the UK?

Any UK providers for only a 2 day tests or is it too soon for those to emerge?

        • Anthony says:

          https://nwp-online.co.uk/

          £40 day 2 test

          • ChrisC says:

            Ok thanks

That looks to be green list only (Germany is Amber at the moment) but will keep an eye out

          • meta says:

Prenetics is the cheapest one for entry to UK at £26. For day 2 one go for the cheapest one if traveling after 19 July. Somebody mentioned £28 one on previous pages.

        • Rob says:

Day 2 tests have been bookable since Green List came in.

          • BrightonReader says:

But Germany and a huge swathe of Europe are on the Amber list so requiring (at the momemt) day 2 + 8 tests

I don’t think BA would let be board at BER with only a two day test booked until the Government make that specific

          • TGLoyalty says:

            Make what specific?

It’s clear that if you are over 18 and fully jabbed + 14 days you’re the same as a green list arrival. Do just a day 2 (or before) test.

          • kitten says:

Just read that France is now vaccinating age 12 and up. Clearly they know the British are coming 🙂

  • tony says:

Does anyone know of any hotels in London (around the City) which are offering 3 nights for the price of 2 at the moment? I have found some but they’re either further west or not really that much of a deal.

    Many thanks!

    • Ikaz says:

Emyr might be able to get you 3for2 at Hyatts, Intercontinental and Conrad. What about the Andaz Liverpool Street?

    • Cabal Of Rabid Baboons says:

Is the Conrad St James suitable Tony?

      • Dan says:

Emyr got me 343 at The Savoy.

      • tony says:

Thanks – no, most of my meetings are in the City, so I’d be schlepping back and forth across town all the time. I thought the 3-4-2 at the Andaz had finished earlier this year? Will drop Emyr a note.

  • HBommie says:

France entry, is Covisheild (Astra Zeneca) still a problem when producing proof of vaccines status?

    • meta says:

      No.

    • Nick Burch says:

They didn’t even bother looking at the NHS app or printout today, just accepted our word that we were double jabbed. So, absolutely no chance of them spotting a Z in a batch number!

This was at St Pancras as the juxtaposed border control, all they were interested in was the Covid Test and stamping my passport…

  • Imran says:

    Very much off topic:
My loyal old Bosch drill gave up on me today. So I am looking for a new Combi drill for home usage primarily but very often I need to drill into concrete and masonry. Does anyone has any recommendations for the drill brands, shops and miles/points offers on them?

P.S.: I am getting inclined towards DeWalt drills based on some rave online reviews I have read.

    • Travel Strong says:

I’m a big fan of buying a really well rated item that is NOT one of the top brands (for which you pay an arm and a leg). Buy them from a highstreet store and you can return if it isnt up to standard, and often you get a multiyear warranty too.

Very pleased with the Bauker 18V Cordless Combi Drill from Toolstation, it which has 2 batteries included in the £55 price. It has enough clout on its hammer function to drill walls – but at the end of the day it is a combi drill not an SDS bit. So its great for cordless multifunctional use – but if you are drilling concrete all the time – get a corded SDS.

I have an incredible corded SDS from Wickes. Their own brand 1500W SDS+ is £75, and has enough power to annihilate anything!

At these prices, and with perfect performance and a long life span – I find it impossible to justify top brands!

    • KP says:

Check robert dyas. Some good offers there

    • Jonathan says:

Get a cheap Macallister SDS from Screwfix for drilling concrete/masonry. They’re great as long as not planning to use for hours at a time to break concrete or masonry when overheating would be an issue then get a battery powered Dewalt/Milwaukee for everything else. Look at the trade websites as B&Q etc sell DIY models with less durable components. You want brushless & an all metal transmission.

Batteries are the expensive bit so if you only use for an hour at a time just get a 2Ah battery & charge before use, only pros need 5Ah+

    • ThinkSquare says:

I don’t regret investing in a DeWalt. I’ve just checked my Amazon account – I’ve had it 5 years and it’s just been flawless, even with some abuse. Model is 18V XR, but I guess that’s superseded now.

    • the_real_a says:

My Milwaukee is fantastic for all my landlord duties. For lite use they will last a lifetime. The 12v SDS is my go-to drill that i use 99% of the time (after the 12v impact) its incredibly powerful for all DIY type activities. I also have the 18v SDS which has rotor stop for removing tiles. Best thing is that they are available new on eBay so managed to pay for them with Avios -> nectar -> ebay.

    Other question

Past couple of days people have been saying they are posting their NHS home test results (ones in the 7 test pack you can get from pharmacies) into the NHS APP – but they don’t specify which one.

I do those tests and add results to this website https://www.gov.uk/report-covid19-result

How are people getting their results into the NHS App(s)?

The number on the test is the wrong format for the Covid T&T app and the texts/emails don’t have any reference numbers iin the right format to them to add them in.

Can’t see these results in the NHS App either and nor in my GP app

    • Gareth says:

I can see my LFT results (which I log through gov.uk as an NHS staff member) in the NHS App by going to the Covid pass section, then event trials and scroll down to ‘view Covid-19 records’.

      • BrightonReader says:

        Brilliant thanks!

Would never have thought to look there.

Was looking for something obvious like ‘past test results’

    • Sandra says:

I just report mine (I’m not NHS) as per your link and they appear in my app, you can see them in the pass section of the NHS App as Gary says

  • Nigel W says:

Just checking, is paying Brighton via Beady x HSBC still working?

    • PK says:

I got a call from HSBC last week where the reviewed my WE card transactions with me. I could make up some excuse for the Che top-ups but couldn’t give an excuse for the Seagulls transactions, because anything I would have said would have self-incriminated me.

Long story short, they let me off with a warning. But I wouldn’t risk my Premier relationship with them again.

    • Anna says:

Chris – it’s being reported that travel to the US won’t re-start until September at the earliest, you might be best looking for European Plan B before prices start shooting up!
Your flights may well still run as US nationals can enter the US and cargo is still moving but at least you can cancel or get FTV up until just before you were due to go!

  • Alex says:

    Good stuff lol
