We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Just please remind me of the advantages of cash vs Avios tickets on BA. Looking to book for September but of course the world could change by then, am I looking at 35 pounds each to change the redemption but cash would just go into a voucher?

    • Jonathan says:

You’d only be able to get a voucher if the flight isn’t cancelled. If you cancel an Avios booking for £35, you get back whatever you’ve paid

      • LessCleverAndrew says:

Are you sure? From the BA website:

You can claim a voucher to the value of your booking, valid for travel until 30 April 2023, if:
You booked prior to 3 March 2020 for travel due to have started by 28 February 2021
You booked from 3 March 2020 onwards for travel due to be completed by 30 April 2022

        • ChrisC says:

Jonathan gave the correct advice for an AVIOS flight that the PASSENGER cancels.

No fee if you turn it into an FTV

£35 to have avios returned to your account and cash back to your card.

          • LessCleverAndrew says:

Gotcha. Was aware of the rules but misunderstood his reply.

  • Chas says:

How quickly does IHG status update once points are awarded? My CC points normally post on the 23rd of the month, and when they post later this month I will have hit Spire. I have a stay booked on 26 July, and am wondering if I will get the 100% points bonus for the stay only if my status has formally updated by then. I’m obviously not expecting (m)any other status benefits….

  • Yuff says:

Quarantine ditched for fully vaccinated from July 19th……hallelujah

    • Rui N. says:

Does this apply to tourists coming into the UK as well?

    • Tracey says:

UK residents, vaccinated in the UK, coming to England. Guess the devolved nations have to wait for their own announcements.

      • Rui N. says:

So, what are the rules for tourists then?

      • ChrisBCN says:

I’m not a UK resident, but I do have a UK passport, I wonder how they would know I am not resident….

        • Steve says:

They’ll presumably use the NHS app as proof of vaccination? If you were vaccinated in the UK you’ll be fine, I guess.

    • Sean says:

UK residents vaccinated in the UK only and those that can evidence vaccination from taking part in an approved trial (eg. won’t be on the NHS App).

    • Anna says:

      🎉🎆🎄🎇🍾🥂😁😎
      🤞

      • Sean says:

Just remember he did say Amber countries can still turn Red!!

        • Anna says:

          Hence the 🤞

          • Sean says:

I thought another key point was that he also said FCO advice about not travelling to Amber countries would also be withdrawn on 19 July. Assume this therefore impacts insurances from that point onwards?

      • Optimus Prime says:

Not sure about the Christmas tree… 😛

        • Michael C says:

That’ll be for flights to NYC restarting!

          • Anna says:

Lol the tree is for the cancelled Christmas we had last year!

      • Rimmingtown says:

        WTF is that?!

  • The Lord says:

Just need Sleepy Joe to return the favour now

    • Optimus Prime says:

What favour? Americans aren’t still allowed here without quarantine.

      • Yorkie Aid says:

Yes, but they are allowed in without travelling via a 3rd country for two weeks.

  • stevenhp1987 says:

Prenetics… Ordered the test on Tuesday, supposedly next day delivery.

Got the DPD Tracking link – says next day delivery. Even today the link says DPD have not received the parcel… We kind of need it tomorrow (unless they do Saturday delivery) as we’re flying to Iceland on Sunday and this was for our fit to fly on the way back!

    Is this normal for them?

    • Lottie says:

We ordered Monday about 5pm and got ours Wednesday lunchtime

      • stevenhp1987 says:

Hmmm doesn’t bode too well for me then.

The DPD tracker just says “We’ve received your order details, but have not yet received your parcel” which means it hasn’t been scanned in at all.

Their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. They just copy and paste the same reply stating it’s been dispatched and I can track it with DPD… No way to actually call them.

        • C says:

Their phone number is at the bottom of the order confirmation. I’ve called them twice today and they answered straight away and were very helpful.

    • SimonP says:

I was very dubious about Prenetics after reading TripAdvisor. Booked using Eurotunnel link. You need to set up an account. Kits arrived in time. Tests delivered to one of their pods before 4pm courier collection and result delivered within 24 hours. I was concerned but now I have the result within acceptable time I can’t really complain.

  • Reney says:

Just found a Mr and Mrs Smith redemption that I liked on IHG. 30 day cancellation notice is a lot!

  • Anna says:

Despite the announcement, flight prices to the Balearics are still astonishingly low. Just nabbed Mallorca for under £150 each including luggage and seats for the end of August.

    • Aston100 says:

Anna, where does ‘nabbed’ sit in the hierarchy?
I’m guessing somewhere between grabbed and snagged?

      • Anna says:

Yes, and I consider it a bit of a steal compared to normal school holiday prices! Going with one of my oldest friends and her little boy, hardly seen them for the past year.

    • Beardless Hipster says:

I wonder if BA will now reinstate some of the cancelled flights for late July.

      • Anna says:

Depends where to, lots of places still have restrictions for entry which will put UK tourists off.

        • meta says:

Demand will still below in general as testing still required and people have now booked UK holidays for the summer which are mostly non-refundable now. However, that didn’t stop flight prices increasing on some routes.

      • MattB says:

My flight to menorca next Sat that I booked a few days ago was cancelled last night!! Moved onto the later flight which looks quite busy as can only get CE row 8 at the moment.

  • Gtellez says:

Does anyone know if possible to get second jab in England if the first dose was in Scotland? Or have anyone been able to get second dose in Scotland before 8 weeks and how? I got my first jab on Jun 19, so theoretically can’t get the second jab until Aug 14, but have a business trip Jul 27 – Aug 4 and would be wonderful to skip self isolation after coming back (already had to do it twice in the last month and a half…)

    • Sean says:

Remember – fully vaccinated in this context means 14 days after your second jab – you seem to need it to be just over 4 weeks since 19 June which would be a little tight.

      • Gtellez says:

It still could work for me if I can get the second jab around Jul 21, that would be 4.5 weeks before I have to fly back. Just don’t know if possible, either in Scotland or England… I don’t mind traveling anywhere if I can avoid ten days at home again (as in Scotland I can’t use test and release…). I spent the first ten days of June like that and now I’m in my day 5 of my second self isolation and starting to be quite desperate. The worst is that it is for work… my employer doesn’t care that much.

        • Tracey says:

Skipping isolation from amber countries only applies to people staying in England. Scotland hasn’t announced anything similar ….yet.
