The HfP chat thread – Thursday 8th July

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

If you signed up for the BA data breach claim, you won’t be pleased to know that all hell broke out on Flyertalk last night after the settlement figure was published.

Suffice it to say that anyone who believed the numbers being quoted by the lawyers (as opposed to our prediction) was taken for a ride. No guarantee that what was published and now deleted was correct but there was enough accompanying detail to make it sound genuine.

    • Doug M says:

I don’t find the amount mentioned surprising, but the expectation it wouldn’t be like this is surprising.
It’s interesting BA can completely screw up looking after the data as they did, see the fine imposed reduced to a trivial sum for them, and then force what little they pay out to be concealed behind NDA. I’d like to see much tougher rules regarding NDA, using them for commercial reasons is almost always unacceptable.

      • Lady London says:

I have absolutely no idea why BA would even bother to try to enforce a “mass NDA”. It’s a contradiction in itself. Just looks bad, and impossible to ensure it will be effective.

Like…”first payee’s wife blurts out the amount, and that triggers BA to pay nobody because the NDA has been breached? Really?

    • yorkieflyer says:

TBH the figure sounded reasonable and my name is on the list

      • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

Approximately how many Greggs sausage rolls would it buy?! Is it even enough for a decent travel kettle?!

        • Richie says:

Thirty of those cheap kettles as mentioned in the May half term review.

      • Lady London says:

Well I don’t prostitute my personal data for… say… £ 3 0 0. There is *no* amount that would be sufficient for me given the longterm consequences of my data being out there.

        • marcw says:

Don’t store your data with them then, then you don’t have to prostitute your data for anything.

      • Number9 says:

Mine to, and I’ve always taken the view if it’s say enough for a takeaway for Sunday night great, if it’s a little bit more will be spending money when I take grandson to WWE at O2 if it’s high 3 figures it will go in holiday spending money pot.

  • Sina says:

I know this has been asked billion times, but can anyone recommend a fast & cheap Lateral flow & day 2 & 8 test for Eurotunnel?

Also, do you know if I enter Belgium by land for transit, do I need to do PCR?

    • Nick Burch says:

Qured are £33 with the BA etc discount for lateral flow, supervised by video call, PDF normally within an hour. Randox are pretty cheap and normally decent for 2+8

  • T says:

Last question about London hotels (at least for a while). I find feedback from HfP readers more valuable than ratings on Tripadvisor etc.

    Thoughts on Hilton Paddington?

    • Ja says:

Depends what your reason for being there is. I have stayed single nights and it is perfectly reasonable but nothing exciting. It’s clean comfortable but probably wouldn’t want to stay if I was to spend a week in London

    • The Lord says:

Decent location, easy walk to Hyde Park and Regents Park. Easy stroll into Soho and Oxford Street. Not on the nicest street though, pretty average.

  • N says:

Anyone else got a fancypants personalised video from the Amex business team, but where your business name is completely wrong?

  • yorkieflyer says:

The transport secretary’s travel update in the House of Commons is due at 11:30 BST. Amber quarantine rules the expected subject

  • Mco says:

I need to get from LGW area to Kings Cross tomorrow. What’s the cheapest taxi company? Uber?

    • John says:

What’s wrong with a 45 minute train for around £10

      • Mco says:

Two suitcases and strolley. Can’t manage on my own. Is it a direct train to kings cross area?

        • Optimus Prime says:

Yes. It’s the train to Bedford via London Bridge.

          • Mco says:

Yeah can’t be changing trains. Prefer to just taxi it. What’s the cheapest option?

          • Lady London says:

no there are through trains to St Pancras (adjacent to Kings Cross) too.

What’s your ultimate destination? some changes to trains going further North are on same platform at St Pancras

          • Optimus Prime says:

It’s a direct service, “via London Bridge” is just how it’s announced. So that you know it doesn’t go through London Victoria like other services.

        • Gavin says:

@Mco, it’s a direct train, no changes. It’ll be much quicker than a taxi, too! 45 mins for train, about 1 hr 30 mins for taxi. Pre-booked minicabs seem to be about £65 from Gatwick to King’s Cross.

        • John says:

I’ve seen many people carry more than that. Just go after 9.30, can pay by contactless

  • TheInsiderFly says:

If you enter Portugal (Porto) with only one jab, do you have to see out your 14 day quarantine or could you quarantine at a villa for 5 days and then fly home?
