Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Monday 5th July

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Did everyone get the letter from Virgin about Che topups being classed as cash advances as of August? (Can’t remember exact date – I shred nearly all of my post).

It said something along the lines of: Transactions to prepaid debit cards and e-money institutions will be classed as cash advances

    • Roberto says:

Do we think Curve metal transactions will fall into this?

      • ChasP says:

As Virgin will be the one levying the charges why would metal be different ?

    • ChasP says:

yes been raised on here at least 3 times ( 16th June by me)

There’s some doubt as to exactly what will be charged (National Savings ??) but the date on my e mail was Aug 5th – but thats my renewal date

was cancelling anyway but now have a good reason

      • Roberto says:

What’s the reason Virgin would do this?
Do they not earn the same cut via these transactions?

        • Rob says:

Their cut is about half of what they pay for the miles ….

        • Bazza says:

What’s the reason they do this? Because you have all been promoting this to anyone and everyone for the last 2 years! Its over and you did it to yourselfs

          • Blenz101 says:

I think the logic has always been they buy the miles wholesale. They make some money from transaction fees but most is made via interest, foxex, late payment etc.

Those gaming the system via MS make a loss but do may for good figures if trying to massage spend figures and show how attractive your brand is.

Expect a lot of comments here when people have been stung come August when they can enforce the new T&Cs.

Hi all, for Wimbledon are the tests on this link the same as the lateral flow test for entry? I’m not double vaxed yet.

    • Tracey says:

Yes. If you register your result on the NHS website for reporting lateral flow tests, you will get back a text and an email that you can use as “proof”.

Evening, does anyone know how long it takes to upgrade from Blue to Curve metal ? Thanks

    • TGLoyalty says:

Your blue starts acting as a metal pretty much instantly after paying

      • Tw33ty says:

Curve metal cards get made in the USA, so they take a bit longer as they are also made and shipped in batches I’m told.

        • TGLoyalty says:

Ok but your account acts exactly like a “metal” account regardless of what card you have

  • tonyb says:

    Thanks TG

I’m looking to book a weekend at the The Fellows Curio Collection in Cambridge. Will the Hilton Amex offer work on this as it’s not part of the listed participating hotels. Thanks

  • Luke says:

Germany just dropped the restrictions put on vaccinated UK travellers. Some good news. We just need Amber travel to open up.

    • Dave says:

I just need Austria to do the same and my summer holiday might be on after all!

  • Njb says:

Good rooftop lunch restaurant in London – thing the Rooftop at St James at the moment.
