The HfP chat thread – Saturday 3rd July

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Silly one but is there a guide or link to the mark-up code that can used for this comments section? Be nice to be able to use italics/quotes/ and possibly the odd smilie.

    • Andrew says:

      You can use smiles 😀

      • CarpalTravel says:

The mainstream ones I have kind of guessed at, that and the ;-). That’s about it!

        • Peter K says:

What keyboard are you using on your phone? I’m using gboard and it has an emoji section that works with wordpress 🙂🙇⛄

        • QFFlyer says:

I think emojis work natively, I’ve just typed these using my Mac’s Touch Bar…(they appear as I type this, guess I’ll see once I post it!)…🎠😂👌🏻😍🐴🦄🦓

          • CarpalTravel says:

Ah, gotcha, thanks! I more often than not I am browsing HFP on my desktop/laptop computer.

          • fivebobbill says:

If you’re using windows, right click on the bottom task bar, then click on “show touch keyboard button”. It adds a virtual keyboard to your bottom task bar and will give you access to all the smileys you’ll ever need 😜👍

  • CarpalTravel says:

    Or not…

    • CarpalTravel says:

That was meant to be a reply to myself above ^^^. Replies not working properly again. 🙁

  • Vin says:

Didn’t think I’d ever wax lyrical about a HIX but the one in Derry city centre ticks so many boxes – central location within walking distance of the walls, 13k points a night, breakfast better than other HIX I’ve stayed in on ‘the mainland’, and IHG have finally got some things right in the new version of HIX eg plug points where you actually use/need them and updated decor with clever storage space. Derry itself is a lovely city for a staycation short break, steeped in history and plenty to do and see in the vicinity.

  • BuildBackBetter says:

Ten European countries have bowed to pressure and unilaterally said they will accept the Indian-made version of the AstraZeneca jab at their borders amid mounting anger from Britons who unknowingly received the vaccine.

    • BuildBackBetter says:

Those countries include Austria, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Slovenia and Spain, and Iceland and Switzerland.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Bowed to what pressure they already recognised it before the telegraph “broke” their BS scaremongering story.

No one is checking batch numbers at borders.

    • ChrisBCN says:

What a strange distortion of reality! This was never a thing.

      • David says:

Indeed. BBB doesn’t seem to be able to engage in critical thinking and simply accepts BS pushed by the right wing little englander press.

        • TGLoyalty says:

Doesn’t building back better mean taking more British holidays. Surely it would have been better for them not to accept the 5m …

        • BuildBackBetter says:

Lol, I just copy pasted the relevant text as it was discussed here last few days.

      • The Savage Squirrel says:

Is this entire story just to let some little-Englanders feel they have scored some sort of “victory” over Europe?

    • Harry T says:

This was never an issue – it was only a frail attempt to whip up angry xenophobic gammon sentiment and get a few page views. And I subscribe to the telegraph, before anyone calls me an Islington apologist 😊

      • Jonathan says:

No, they bowed to Boris’ threat to send gunboats to Vienna, Berlin, Bern & Madrid & to personally smack Angela Merkel’s bottom with his wiff waff bat next time he saw her.

  • Anon says:

Got through on the Amex resale for Wimbledon tickets but kept getting a 5005 error when trying to pay (card details incorrect). I checked my card details and they were all right. Is it just the website being unable to cope with demand?

    • Waiting2go says:

I’ve tried every day this week to get tickets…. is there a technique?

Did you make it through to payment?

      • Sam G says:

have you been checking the link from inside myWimbledon? I’ve frequently seen tickets there all week seemed a bit random on times so worth keep checking. Could have got today but decided to stay home for the football instead!

        • Sam says:

How do you get access to this Amex resale? Is it via MyWimbledon on the official Wimbledon website?

          • Rob says:

MyWimbledon has more at the moment inc No2, No3 etc. Just need to keep checking every hour for the ‘drop’.

  • Vit says:

Not sure if this has been covered but there is Sainsbury 10% cb via smart reward on MBNA. I wonder if we can tag along a few giftcard in store.. Would like to hear if anyone have tried.

    Cheers,
    Vit

    • Sukes says:

I haven’t got sainsburys but I do have 10% at costa, subway, harvey nicks & europcar. The offerings seem to be improving.

    • Andrew says:

You can indeed. The fund return is based entirely on the statement entry, not what you purchased.

      I’ve got 5%>

    • Andrew M says:

I believe it was mentioned a couple of days ago and I didn’t have it on my card at the time. I just checked again and I have it now, so thanks! It’s the first MBNA offer that I will be able to use.

    • Andrew M says:

Maximum return is £30 so probably a $300 gift card for me. Expires on 25/07 and you have to register first obviously as you do with Amex.

  • Sandra says:

Email from Qatar this morning saying if you enter the promo code UEFA when searching a flight & booking it by 23/7 you can get UP TO 15% discount for travel by 10/12/21. Not tried it but if you are intending to book with them in the next couple of weeks it might be worth giving it a go if you’ve no other promo code. Says you must enter at search stage and if accepted it will notify you at the time.

  • Rh says:

I just spend an hour and 5 mins on hold to the 0344 493 0747 BA executive number and then they cut me off! Grrrr

I need to cancel and get a refund for an avois flight only in 5 days time, can anyone recommend another number I can call where I might get though please? I remember loads of previous comments on this but when do a search I can’t seen to find…..thanks.

    • Anna says:

Send them a message via Twitter, I did this recently and over about 24 hours the whole thing got sorted.

    • QFFlyer says:

PM to BA Refund Helper on FlyerTalk.

      • Jonathan says:

        They’re not active anymore.

        • QFFlyer says:

Oh really, that’s a shame, they were really good. They recently helped me out maybe 4-5 months ago.
