The HfP chat thread – Friday 2nd July

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Does anyone know anything about Europcar car rentals at Lyon?
I’ve heard rumours that they’ve closed shop for July but can’t get through to them and haven’t received any notification about my rental

  • Sam says:

Hi all, I’m not double vaxed yet but looking to go to Wimbledon. A bit out of the game but know the system has changed, in previous years I’ve purchased a resale ticket after queuing in the grounds but don’t think that is happening this year. Are tickets released on a daily basis?

I know I need a lateral flow test but is that the same as a PCR (so far not had to take any covid tests) and it’s all a little confusing.

    Thanks!

    • Cats are best says:

Lateral flow – cheap/simple/quick test you can do yourself – the packs of free NHS tests are lateral flow.

PCR – needs a lab to process, takes longer, costs more, more reliable results.

    • Rich says:

Lateral flow tests – you can pick them up for free from your local pharmacy. You do the test yourself at home, then register the result online, which then sends you an email/ SMS confirmation of the result.

Not the same as a PCR test, which needs to be sent to a lab.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Or anywhere you see a sign for tests for those without symptom.

    • Sam G says:

Tickets – either myWimbledon account under “manage benefits” – I don’t know if there is a specific time they are releasing them there but I’ve frequently seen centre court or court 1 available in the morning this week

There are also some amex ticketmaster tickets that go on sale every day at 10am you can try for

      • AJA says:

They seem to be releasing tickets around midnight the night before which are still there in the morning if not snapped up.

        • Rob says:

There was 1 solitary No1 ticket for tomorrow there 45 minutes ago because I checked. Went when I refreshed. It is clearly a manual process.

          • Sam says:

Thanks all. Is there no way of obtaining resale tickets (or does it mean queuing outside the grounds in the hope someone sells/gives you theirs)?

          • Rob says:

            Tickets do not allow re-entry.

You would need to buy a £30 Grounds Pass, when they pop up on MyWimbledon, and then hang around the show courts from 6pm and try to get a ticket off someone leaving.

        • Babyg says:

the midnight thing was for the first batch days ago – i have not seen midnight releases since then…. now its dribs and rabs.. a bunch of people manually cancelling and then adding by the looks of things..

    • Babyg says:

loads of tickets available now for tomorrow…

  • Mrs_Fussy says:

Hi – someone mentioned that they are in Antigua currently. I know they only accept in person administered PCR test. Can you please confirm whether the letter needs to specify as such ?

  • r* says:

If you have things booked on a gold amex and then cancel the card, does s75 still apply after the card has been cancelled?

  • Jody says:

WaynedP, how was your MSC cruise?

  • Aaron C says:

Coming back from Iceland on 21 July. What are the chances of the day 2 test being scrapped? Trying to decide whether to book now or to wait and book while there.

    • Rich says:

Nothing lost by leaving it as late as possible. You could buy the tests and fill in the PLF on the morning of your return flight, if you want. (Give yourself a good half hour in a quiet room to do it though!)

      • Aaron says:

Ta. Done the forms before and they are a pain aren’t they!

  • Reney says:

Hello, some advice / help. I have Kimpton St Honore Paris booked for the end of August when Rob wrote about a really great deal and I had two IHG vouchers (Us version, max 40k per nights) to use up. The vouchers have been extended to year end, But the points price has sky rocketed to 80k+ pn so I don’t know if I can move the nights if i don’t want to go at end August. I am also very confused as to whether I can go to Paris if I was willing to travel. I would be double jabbed by then, not sure about how all the testing would work? Also no one ever mentions what happens if you actually get covid whilst away, I assume I won’t be very sick but will a hotel be willing to house you for 2 weeks even if I have insurance that will pay up? I’m confused. Return quarantine is not a problem for me re work, I should be able to work from home.

    • Harry T says:

No one knows whether the UK government will permit travel to France in august. There’s not much point in wasting time and energy worrying about the entry requirements might be at present – the situation is dynamic and constantly changing.

The hotel might move your stays if you ask nicely but the points price of the hotel is usually 65k plus these days, so they would be entitled to ask you to pay more points.

I think it’s best to hold fire for now and see what happens over the next month or so.

      • Anna says:

Travel to France is already permitted by the UK government, however I think from the French side you currently have to have an essential reason to travel there from the UK.

      • Lady London says:

I would wait as HarryT suggests .

If I wanted to move the date then the sort of deal I might be hoping to make with the hotel would be for my paid night I would pay the difference but for the free night they let any difference be forgotten and leave it in place.

Is there any reason for the end of August date? Paris is not really Paris at that time…

    • Reney says:

thanks all, basically wait a bit. I might try to move the stay if possible.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Align it to the 3 week review.

Last one was Announced 24th and implanted 30th June.

So you’d probably want to travel back after the 11 August or 1st September

  • Mick Severn says:

Hi – is it possible to use the Barclays Upgrade voucher when using a partner airline, eg Qatar?
