The HfP chat thread – Thursday 1st July

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

      No teenagers allowed though!

sounded like they just couldn’t scan the QR before July 1st

    • stevenhp1987 says:

      Was there last week.

Considering flying out Sat morn, coming back Sun.

About the same price as TTR (Ryanair Hand baggage for one night!) and we’d no longer isolate on our return! Otherwise I’m isolating until Thursday next week due to them being Amber last week…

Need to book Eurotunnel trip with my car – any chance for earning or spending Avios?

  • Aston100 says:

    Considering Bali for Summer 2022.
The Hilton and the Conrad seem to tick most of the boxes.
Does anyone here have any experience of those two?

Also, would 3 nights somewhere in/near Ubud feel about right?

    • Genghis says:

Stayed in Conrad in 2017 for a week. Nice hotel and good Diamond recognition. Beach v unimpressive but Nusa Dua ones are. Would stay again, however.

Been to Ubud a few times and it’s one of my favourite places. I’d go for longer if you can in a nice hotel overlooking rice fields etc. Go for walks, take a cooking class, relax.

Other tips: babi guling is delicious. Jatiluwih Rice Terrace is pleasant if you’ve never seen such things before but not a patch say on Ping’An area in Guilin.

      • Aston100 says:

Thanks Genghis. I can spare up to 5 nights for Ubud.
Might mean decreasing Conrad/Hilton down to 7 nights though.

I also plan to visit Yogyakarta for 5 nights during that same trip. Is there any overlap/similarities between Ubud and Yog?

        • BuildBackBetter says:

Jogja (Yogyakarta) can be quite humid. Plan for a visit early morning or late evening. Don’t miss the Ramayana show there. A bit touristy but a decent show. Would suggest reading the story beforehand and they have a difference compared to the Indian version.
The place is different from Ubud as it’s one massive temple complex whereas Ubud is littered with small but beautiful temples.

        • BuildBackBetter says:

5 days for Jogja might be a lot of time unless you plan to visit Borobudur.

    • David S says:

Most of the beaches in the Nusa Dua area are man made and the reef in front has long been trampled flat. You can walk out a good kilometre when the tide is out. We liked The Laguna best

      • Genghis says:

Yep. I spent an hour or so on an overcast late afternoon watch some locals walk around the sea with their fishing nets and IIRC pick up crab traps. Quite relaxing.

Not been to Yogyakarta so can’t comment.

      • Sam G says:

+1 for the Laguna though the Conrad has had a refurbishment recently and is nice if you can get in the exec wing, there is a good thread about it on flyertalk

  • VickyTM says:

Am I correct in thinking that if I am travelling to France on a Tuesday morning and then returning on the Wednesday evening, I can use the same antigen test for both flights if I take it on the Sunday and hopefully get the results back on the Monday? The UK gvmt website seems to say the test has to be taken within 3 days prior, not 72 hrs.
    Thanks

    • Rich says:

Yep. Any of the three preceding days for UK, so Sunday is fine.

  • Rory says:

What are peoples experiences with getting a walk in vaccine in London? I’m 25 working in Soho, but registered with a GP in Scotland. Would rather not fly home just for the vaccine. Anyone had any experiences?

    • Pete M says:

Do you have an NHS number? If so I don’t think it should be a problem hopefully? You may find this useful, although not entirely your case presumably: https://www.england.nhs.uk/coronavirus/wp-content/uploads/sites/52/2021/06/C1317-COVID-19-vaccination-FAQs-students-in-Higher-Education-Institutions-.pdf

      • Idrive says:

Pfizer kind of highly unavailable at walk in but you can try just in case they have no show, AZ they throw it at you but you can’t for your age band

    • Phil W says:

I tried earlier this year, but that was using the booking system. It recognised I was NHS Scotland. It might be different as a walk up.

      • Rory says:

Yeah the booking system won’t let me do anything. Update: found a walk in clinic, gonna give it a shot.

    • MJ says:

For me it was the other way round I was in Scotland and London based. I could either temporarily register at a drs surgery in Scotland (which seemed a bit of a faff) or travel to London. I did the latter.

    • Tracey says:

I work at a vaccine centre. It really isn’t a problem, if you are eligible we will jab you. The only problem I can see is getting it all on your records in a way that will generate a fully vaxxed certificate. This seems to be a headache for England GPs, who can see that you have been vaxxed but the certificate is difficult to generate. In Scotland the certificate isn’t generated in the same way, so it may not be an issue.

      • Rory says:

Thanks for the advice! I phoned the Scottish helpline and they said it’s not an issue – apparently it should be on my NHS record, and I just let them know so they can update my vaccine status.

  • Simon says:

I have the enhanced referral offer on my platinum business (30k for me, 60k for other other person) and it says it’s valid for referrals until 7 September. Is there a cap on this besides the normal annual 90k referral points limit (which presumably applies as usual)? Sorry if I missed an article on this recently!

    • Andrew says:

Just the usual 90k per calendar year cap per account applies.

      • Rob says:

Yes, as far as I can tell it is included in your 90k for the year annoyingly.

Aer Lingus AerClub tier extension email:
“We are delighted to let you know that we are extending tier status for another year for memberships due to expire between 01 July 2021 and 30 June 2022.”

No flying required. Take from it what you will re IAG attitude generally.
