We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Zoe says:

Just got Centre Court tickets for tomorrow other courts are likely to appear shortly. Remember each person can only buy one set of 2 tickets.

    • Alex says:

One set however you can attend multiple times if someone else shares/assigns a ticket of their set.

      • Zoe says:

Yes, I bought our Monday ones, my husband has bought the ones for tomorrow.

      • AJA says:

I thought it was one set of tickets per household, meaning people at the same address can only have one set of tickets?

        • A says:

One per person, email or credit card

Can do more than one pair per household subject to above

    • Phil says:

Where are you buying these tickets? Can’t find a link on the official site to tickets

      • Rob says:

Register for MyWimbledon, go to your account home page, there is a big Buy Tickets button.

    • YC says:

Did anyone see Sat Centre Court availability? I see they are now appearing but ‘sold out’. Just wondering if they had actual availability and have been quickly snapped up in the last hour?

      • Tony Soprano says:

My brother managed to nab a pair around 8pm. I had a look myself and it looks like single tickets for Centre on Sat are intermittently appearing. Keep trying!

        • babyg says:

just picked up a pair of centre court tix for saturday… w00t – same day as zoe again!

          • Tony Soprano says:

Just checked still available, good luck.

          • babyg says:

they seem to come and go.. suspect they are doing it manually… got some really good tickets compared with normal… right behind the royal box!

          • Zoe says:

Hi babyg I’ve actually got tickets for tomorrow rather than Saturday, it’s amazing! I’ve just sorted another picnic.

          • Babyg says:

ah, wont “see” you saturday then Zoe, enjoy tomorrow…. i need to order more champagne now!

        • YC says:

Awesome got a pair! Could be the last time to see Federer live!

  • Alex M says:

Still no qr code for my Wimbledon ground ticket for tomorrow- should i be worried?

    • Paul says:

you should get an email with a big button ‘Access Tickets’. You press this and then it converts your profile to one that has tickets. It’s a very strange ticketing system.

    • SteveJ says:

QR code shows up in the app on the day

    • The Lord says:

Mine not showing either. Shared my second ticket with my wife and hers not showing in the app? It is showing when logging into her mywimbledon via a browser

      • Zoe says:

You might need to allow an extra hour and go to ticket resolution at gate 1D. Its the first gate if you walk from Southfields or car park 6.

        • rams1981 says:

are people buying for more than one day using different email and addresses (as well as payment card)?

        • babyg says:

my household has purchased 4 tickets in total, 2 email address, 2 credit cards, 2 names…

  • S says:

Interested in the IHG promos and the Amex offer for IHG hotels. Looking to book the Staybridge Suites in Vauxhall for a couple of nights and then the Kimpton Fitzroy for the next couple of nights. That should hopefully be enough to get a free night.

If I get Ambassador and I stay at the Kimpton that should be enough to get another free night.

Are the Ambassador benefits solely for Intercontinental hotels or can they be for Kimpton too?

Also what are some good redemptions for the free nights certs?

    Anyone stayed at Staybridge/Kimpton London?

Any and all comments would be most welcome!

    • Anna says:

Elite status is more recognised at Kimptons than Ambassador, though up till 31/12 you can use the Ambassador certificate at Kimptons on any night of the week. Have to say that Ambassador rates are not great at the moment due to standard rates being considerably lower recently.
Hard to say re the free night certificate as points prices are all over the place at the moment!

    • Sandra says:

Not renewed Ambassador since it ran out last year as have no IC/Kimpton stays booked in the UK (or anywhere else!) at the moment. The free night certificate we usually use for a long w/e in Europe and had some decent recognition, IC in Budapest was excellent with a brilliant view of the river, castle and chain bridge from our upgraded room a couple of years ago. The free night certificate normally only allows you to book a standard room and you have to politely negotiate directly with the hotel after booking, for example to keep the higher grade room you might have had the previous night(s), keep lounge access on the free night etc. Generous hotels don’t mind, others ask you to pay a supplement.

  • Keith says:

My sister has a companion voucher. I am going to travel with her. She is short by around 50,000 avios for our desired destination and cabin. What is the cleanest way for me to put 50,000 of my miles towards the trip. I would rather not have her in my household account as the redemption would take a proportionate amount of miles from our accounts – whereas what we are looing to do is spend all of her miles and 50k of mine. Any (cheap ideally free) ideas?

    • Andrew says:

Are you BA gold? If so transfers are free.

    • Anna says:

Is she eligible for any referral/sign up Amex bonuses? It’s quite easy to get 50k avios within a few weeks at the moment, if she is.

      • Keith says:

She holds a BA (free) and a Amex Rewards Card (The See Through One) so I don’t think so. Thanks though.

    • YC says:

Avios is on sale around 1p. That would be clean if you are happy to have a cash outlay

    • Genghis says:

Could put her in HHA, transfer others’ avios to aer club / IB to leave only your sister’s avios and your 50k in the HHA.

    • TGLoyalty says:

What about booking somewhere for 50k Avios and minimal £ thinking business class with £1 option then cancel for an FTV

She should be able to put that towards and 2-4-1 booking if you’re travelling

      • TGLoyalty says:

To be safe book the flight for HER … it’ll then be her 50k Avios flight.

Someone correct me if they can see an issue?

    • Peter K says:

I suggest you move all of the miles from all the accounts in your family group into avios.com accounts (veuling or aer lingus) for each person, apart from the exact amount (50k ish) you need in yours.

Get the other person to move all except the exact amount they need for the redemption out of their account.

Make the other person a member of the household account. Spend the miles for the redemption. As you will have the exact number of miles you need for the redemption the correct number will leave each account.

Move the person out of the household account as soon as possible afterwards.

      • Yorkieflyer says:

Is there a danger of the avios immediately expiring if you haven’t had earning/redeeming activity in the prior 36 months in avios/AerClub account?

    • pauldb says:

Spend all bar 50k of your avios on a dummy booking before she joins; make the desired booking; cancel the dummy (phone req’d) for free within 24hrs.

  • Ian says:

Look forward to a single non sponsored post tomorrow.

    Three out of three today!

    • bafan says:

Someone has to pay the bills!

      • Rob says:

Yes …. got a problem there. Someone turned up this morning and offered us a decent sum in return for an article tomorrow. And Avios already has one booked for their ‘buy Avios’ deal ending. So that means two ….

Nothing next week (although we have put an offer out to someone so it might happen).

They are, however, all relevant. We’re not pushing cereal bars or whatever.

Need to pay for Rhys’s tour of the Balearics somehow …!

        • Ali M says:

          Rob I wouldn’t explain as much…
I have found articles useful & I am sure lots of people have 😅

        • Harry T says:

If he’s staying at the St Regis, you’ll probably have to sell your house to pay for that 😂. Let’s hope Rhys doesn’t doom another destination to the Amber list!

        • babyg says:

are cereal bars the new printer cartridges? if so I’m very interested

        • ChrisBCN says:

I actually like Rob’s explanations, it’s refreshingly honest! And makes sense.

        • Yorkieflyer says:

          Every little helps 😎

    • A says:

Do you think the editorial approach is materially affected by the sponsored article? I don’t at all – so I’m not sure what the issue is. Mostly the sponsored articles cover things Rob would cover anyway – perhaps just the timescale moves a little. Doesn’t seem worth whinging about to me

      • Rob says:

We still write it. You will probably find sponsored stuff less sarcastic. We wouldn’t accept it if we fundamentally disagreed with the message. For non travel partners who want to do stuff – and we have one in discussion at the moment – we push them towards funding a competition rather than paying us, which goes down better all round.
