Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 30th June

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Email from Amex about the Gold Business card. Fee is going up to £175 from 1st October. New benefits – get 10,000 bonus points when you spend £20,000 (!) in a quarter. £500 of business discounts a year- don’t know what they are.

    • Lev441 says:

Just saw this via an ad on Hfp! Surprised we didn’t get an article rob!

    • Anna says:

My card year ends in October, I’ll be expecting a very good retention offer at that point!

    • Connor says:

Hope something better is coming for Biz Plat holders soon. Might have to downgrade if not.

      • Tony1 says:

        That’s my thinking also.

No retention offers and despite having over 70 “offers” on the card, nothing that is of any interest. At least the Sweaty Offer will finish soon …

Can not use the PP, an thus the hotel status are u/s as can not travel. There is nothing for this card at the moment to justify the £600 odd fee ( apart from tax deductible )

    • Owen Rudge says:

The T&Cs on the web site suggest “Programme values quoted are based on the minimum available to customers by redeeming all of the offers available to them during a 12 month period.” – so aside from the Dell offer, I think they’re just referring to the standard offers that you’re able to save.

      • Freddy says:

Takes the earn rate to 1.5% – same as the business BA card. Thought they can charge higher fees to retailers on business cards but the earn rate isn’t that much more over personal cards.

  • Ryanfozzie says:

Rob, I remember seeing a comment about holding off applying for a Marriott Amex. Any news on that?

    • Rob says:

      Next month 🙂

    • TGLoyalty says:

Consider if its actually worth waiting if you have had a Marriott Amex in the past 2 years (100% likely you won’t get any bonus) or have had any Amex in the past 2 years (I’d say there is a 50% chance you won’t be eligible for any bonus)

Since its the product itself changing and not an additional product then all benefit changes always apply to existing customers at some point anyway.

Also consider are the 15 nights important to you this year? As they could always be changing this to something else and you’ve missed out (I really hope not!)

      • Lady London says:

Good advice TG. Sounds like making sure 1 member of a couple has a current card in case conditions change on any new release esp the 15 days

        • Reney says:

depends on when next month, because next month starts tomorrow

      • Memesweeper says:

The 15 nights are fairly new anyway…. I can’t see that changing.

        • Freddy says:

Hope the 3 points per £1 returns bit doubt it

        • TGLoyalty says:

Who knows with this lot. Maybe they’ll think they are giving you an upgrade which you don’t actually consider one.

15 nights gets you silver. Imagine if they just gave you gold instead. They may consider that an upgrade. I consider that a massive downgrade.

    • tony says:

Just had an offer come up on my BAPP. Spend £200 at Marriott, get 5k Avios.

Seems odd timing if they’re about to launch a card themselves?

  • FloriGuy says:

Does anyone know if I can refer my wife to get the Retail/Personal Amex Preferred Rewards Gold Card, when I have the AMEX Gold Business Card?

Does the referral bonus cross over that way?

She is a supp on my business card but has not held a card on her own account for over 2 years.

    • Rob says:

Technically it works, in reality the tracking often fails – but you are due the points.

      • FloriGuy says:

Thanks Rob – if it does not track is it easy to get the points with a call?

        • Rob says:

Not incredibly easy since the default call centre position is to assume you are not telling the truth about using a referral link.

    • Lady London says:

Since she hasn’t had a card for 2 years she is in the best position. Did you see Rob’s articles here on the most lucrative sequence to use for card applications?

  • Andrew says:

You can never factor in the Avios you earn there in the cost of buying something, just click through and treat it as easy come easy go.

  • Aston100 says:

I actively avoid that portal. Will only consider it if there are no other portals or codes available elsewhere.

    • Keely says:

+1 don’t bother with it at all . It’s not worth the hassle, the points never post

  • Rob says:

Wimbledon No1 Court tickets for today are still for sale on the website, 12 hours after going up. If you have never been you will never get a better chance than this year. It has the roof now so play is guaranteed.

    • KP says:

      Cant find the link online

      • Rob says:

Log in to your MyWimbledon account and there is a big Buy Tickets button under your account settings.

        • KP says:

          Thanks

        • AJA says:

Rob, had a wonderful day. Watched 4 matches including Dan Evans progressing well. Sadly Venus Williams didn’t do so well but was great to see her. Thanks again for letting us know.

    • AJA says:

Hi Rob. Thank you. Just bought 2 tickets. 😀 Been to Wimbledon before but never the show courts.

  • Rupert says:

Re Malta – Proof of double vaccination via letter, test prior to return, and day two test when back in the UK?

    Is this correct?
