We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I’ve seen several people made the point about enough amex offers to justify the fee. With the exception of the waitrose and marriott offers last year which were exclusive to plat card, are the offers really better on platinium? Could you not get similar offers on a card with a lower fee? The best offer I have had recently (and actually used) is the SLH one and it was only on my nectar card.

    • Rob says:

No better. We get more offers on my wife’s Gold than any other card – usually around 70-90 at once.

      • TGLoyalty says:

There are exclusives. For example the Harrods spend £200 get £50 only on Platinum, plus my 3 supps 🙂

    • meta says:

@Reney let’s see for me, – £400 at Marriott, £300 to spend in Waitrose, then again £175. Amex Travel £50 off, double points offer and Tesco £5 offer (was only on my Plat). That’s before I even go into savings on other offers, permanent Add Lee monthly £10 off (even if I use it every other month, that’s £60), retention bonus last and this year.

My thinking is, if I don’t manage to get at least 3x the annual fee back in offers then the card is not worth keeping. I had the card now for 6+ years and it’s the only one I never churned.

  • TGLoyalty says:

Stock reply is usually only 1 lump sum points retention offer in the last 12 months so expect to get nothing. Worth a phone call though.

  • Imran says:

Trying to book a rental car, but the best CDP I could find online is 15% off. Does anyone have a Hertz CDP they are aware of which is more than 15% off?

    • Phil W says:

Aegean were giving out a 20% CDP a while back to its loyalty members.

    • Jonathan says:

Where are you renting? I’ve heard reports of Hertz in US asking for proof of entitlement on CDP’s due to abuse.

    • Aston100 says:

I’ve found better prices through Alamo (Enterprise) even after taking Avis and Hertz status / offers into account.

      • C says:

Same with Sixt in my case. Hertz pricing has recently been uncompetitive.

  • Zoe P says:

    Hello all
I need some help please. I need to send 500 euro over to my partner’s brother in Ireland. Does anyone know the easiest way or doing this. Avios would be a welcome bonus but not the be all and end all.
    Thanks

  • lev441 says:

I got 50k last week. Last retention offer was in August last year.

After they post I really will downgrade to gold this time around..

    • Sandra says:

Has anyone had a decent Gold retention offer recently? I’m waiting for my bonus points and the first annual fee to go on the account then going to call and wondered what I should be aiming for.

      • Aston100 says:

Sandra – I got 10k on two PRG cards. Others here have received 20k.

        • Sandra says:

Thanks Aston will report back once I’ve called, probs in a couple of weeks. Fee is due to hit in the next day or so and then hopefully my bonus will show.

      • ankomonkey says:

10k on PRG just yesterday just for saying I was thinking of cancelling.

  • Mikeact says:

  • SimonP says:

assistance please – BA API – partner has dual nationality – Avios flights to US booked in the name on the account which is the UK passport name, but wants to enter US passport details in API using maiden name – (a) does API affect access to US etc? (b) if it is advisable to change the information, which number is best? Thanks folks.

    • AJA says:

I think API info has to match the ticket so I would keep UK passport details in the booking. But dual nationals have the right to enter their other country of nationality using that country’s passport (and most countries insist that you enter using that passport).

    • Jonathan says:

I’d try & change the name to the same as US Passport as that will be what she will be using to enter US (& convince BA to let her board the flight). Best number to call is the standard BA CS number for whatever status level you have.

The various geographic numbers posted here occasionally don’t bypass the queue as they all feed into the same call handling system. 95% of the time the Gold/Silver lines will turf you off if you don’t have appropriate status. Try first thing in the morning (8AM) or between 5 & 7 tonight when a lot of the population will be otherwise occupied.

      • Jonathan says:

You would probably be fine on the day if you don’t change it but will take time & may require sight of marriage certificate to prove it’s the same person so turn up at least 3 hours before. I would definitely try & resolve in advance though as US review passenger lists 24 hours before departure & potentially would flag for denied boarding at this point.

    • John says:

When she next renews her British passport HMPO will insist that she changes the US passport to the same name. (The US doesn’t care.)

A UK passport in the API won’t be able to check in for a flight to the US without an ESTA.

Fortunately covid means that there is a US CBP liaison stationed at LHR who could resolve this. But the issue will be convincing BA that the ticket holder is the same person as the passport holder, probably not an issue with a marriage certificate

  • Manya says:

Hi all, I have 2 x BA 2-4-1 (booked in 50% off) flights booked for this July. Out to Mex and return via LAX. Both Mexico and USA are currently on amber list and unlikely to move to green by time of holiday.

I would like to keep the hol but would like to know if anyone can provide an estimate of what the add on costs would be for all the PCR tests. 2 adults and 2 kids (5 and 3).

    • Anna says:

Costs vary quite a lot between providers but the main issue will be whether you’ve spent enough time out of the UK, if that’s where you’re travelling from (14 days?) before you enter the US.
Kids won’t need tests AFAIK to re-enter the UK (it was over 10s last time I checked). I also don’t think you need any to enter the US, so that would cut it down a bit!

      • Manya says:

Thanks – you are right. We would get into Mexico ok but USA has restricted travellers from UK. 🙁
