We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Any discount codes/links for Europcar bookings please? Looking to hire a car In guernsey. Thanks

    • Rob says:

Guernsey is highly likely to be a franchise where costs won’t work. That’s what I found in Jersey.

      • sloth says:

Ah ok thanks, are you aware if Europcar status match to Avis at all?

  • Munch says:

When do the enhanced Plat referrals end (70k instead of 35k)? Looking at a new Personal Plat for the end of July.

  • Hilton query guy says:

Some of you guys need to man up and just fly abroad somewhere.

    • JDB says:

Maybe, but have had too many trips cancelled so happy to wait a bit longer to travel. We were supposed to be in Sicily last week and in my wife & son in Cannes this weekend. Am consoling her with langoustines and Puligny-Montrachet at home instead.

      • Hilton query guy says:

OK that’s not so bad a rationale. But people actually scared of flying – 70% of UK population? – is not something I like to see.

Boris & team to blame – let’s scare the spritzer out of them & keep staycation money in UK, methinks.

Good for economy, good for votes, Sir Keir can kiss his own hand.

        • pauldb says:

It’s nothing like 70% “scared.” Most have decided it’s not worth the hassle (and risk of increased hassle) and have bitten the bullet – booking something domestic if they can.

          • Lord Doncaster says:

Yes most don’t want the hassle..plus the costs of testing… and quite a few have become accustomed/resigned to staying in Britain now…

          • Hilton query guy says:

People could maybe simply man up and buy an air ticket – it’s not that difficult. Got mine out of Plague Island a couple of months ago.

            Lying politicians. Fear. Police State.

            Enough said.

        • The Savage Squirrel says:

Remember most poeple are not ultra-experienced travellers in the same way as HfP regulars and don’t have the same pool of resources to fall back on – trivial issues to you may be quite big obstacles to them. It’s quite reasonable to be “scared” of problems they would struggle to manage like either the UK or your destination changing rules and requirements at any given moment in ways that you can’t predict, last minute flight cancellations, struggling to find comprehensive travel insurance, etc, etc, etc. Above a certain threshold of planning, organisation stress and uncertainty (a threshold that will be different for everyone), it’s a laborious management project, not fun leisure travel … and if it’s not fun it’s entirely rational not to do it.

          • Mr. AC says:

Indeed. A common advice on HfP is if a country you’re in suddenly is added to the Red list, “just” fly to and Amber country instead and spend 10 days there before returning to the UK. No biggie.

        • Harrier25 says:

…..and there is the problem, a Labour leader called ‘Sir’. Really in tune with the working classes of Britain…not!

          • Number9 says:

Spot on Harrier, I asked my cousin a life long labour man loved Jeremy what he thought of his new leader “ how can I in good conscience as a socialist vote for someone with the prefix Sir”

  • Sean says:

Anybody used Club One Hotels before?

    https://www.club1hotels.com/

Anything bad to say about them? I noticed they appear to be quite a bit cheaper vs direct for my holiday next year. Seemed too good to be true …..

  • Yorkshirerich says:

Anyone stayed at doubletree Ricoh arena? Paid what I consider a good price for a Friday night but got the upgrade options on the app. I can’t decide which is better, a water suite or a king room with a pitch view?

    • Hilton query guy says:

Water or King – you pays your money & takes your choice – I’d go for water but somebody else will say the opposite.

    • Grant says:

The water suite is clearly a better appointed and larger room. Depends whether you’d rather have that or a view of the pitch, which IMO is pretty unremarkable after the first 5 mins.

    • TGLoyalty says:

As above Pitch view gets boring after 5 mins. Would go for the water suite.

  • Nicky says:

Absolute bummer, I had 2 doses of AZ so even if corridor opened by September (which is when I am due to go)…..I won’t be allowed to go!!!

  • Paul Pogba says:

My doom reports are cursed. I blame the foosball this time.

  • Hilton query guy says:

I know this is not the place for politics. So it will get lost. But give it 60 minutes. Maybe a reply or 2.

Matt Hancock. He bloody worked 20 hour days for over a year. He did his best. I personally appreciate his work. Admittedly, that possibly included some Matt mates – who cares?

Who would want the worst job in a pandemic?

Admittedly, also a stupid arse to cheat on his wife of 15 years – and what about those 3 kids? What are they thinking?

Much better to get it out of your system when you are younger, I never cheated on my wife in 20 years of marriage as I got all I wanted in the previous 30 years lol.

Anyway – nobody seems to be supporting Matt the silly arse – but I think the work he did was very good & as a taxpayer I appreciate it. Not these days a natural Conservative voter as we like to keep them at bay.

    • Andy says:

If he worked “20 hours a day”, when did he have time for an affair?

      • Hilton query guy says:

Well I guess nobody has a time machine but he should have got it out of his system when they both worked on the student radio station. No blame.

        • Lord Doncaster says:

I’d guess the local tory party aren’t very pally with him at the moment..

          • Hilton query guy says:

He should have sh**ged that Gina something rotten when he was about 22 & got it out of his system then he wouldn’t have had to lose his happy family life & 3 kids, who he has made very sad & miserable, silly Matt.

    • KBuffett says:

It seems pressure of everything has really got to him.

      • Hilton query guy says:

It will feel worse when he gives his wife half his money in the divorce.

        Though I’m sure Matt’s not thinking about Gina’s millions£.

    • Arran says:

You said “get it out of his system” three times now

Did you….you know…get it out of your system?

      • Hilton query guy says:

Arran – funny you should ask that – my bro in law Arran cheated on my sister Kate with another woman doctor for 3 years – hope that’s not the same Scottish Arran.

        Just joshing.

Don’t cheat in marriage or long term relationships: would be my message. Get it out of your system when you are young & fancy free.

        • Arran says:

People cheat for all sorts of reasons though, it isn’t just about “getting it out of your system”

Sex driven cheating sure, not sure your point is valid for the myriad of other excuses people give for cheating

          • Hilton query guy says:

Sure – of course you are 100% right – but better IMHO to marry for love then continue to love and respect your partner (in possibly a different way) even when they turn into your best friend ie not exactly the sexy person you married when you were younger.

    • pauldb says:

Have you logged in as your dad again? Off to bed now, it’s a school night.

    • Andrew says:

I’m in agreement with you Hilton guy – the revelling that some people take in other people’s demise is quite astounding. I appreciate the hard work he and the rest of government has put in over the last 18 months and without a credible opposition party, they will be able to govern for the foreseeable future thankfully.

      • TJones says:

Nobody is denying he worked hard. He’s just been corrupt and incompetent. Just like Mr Johnson, the worst possible prime minister at the worst possible time. The sooner we get these corrupt, lying, law-breaking charlatans out of government the better.

        • Hilton query guy says:

But all politicians are corrupt, lying, law-breaking.

Surely the question/ choice is just: left of centre or right of centre for these corrupt, lying, law-breaking politicians?

          • Hilton query guy says:

            HS2. Any opinions?

Working from home seems to get more important in years to come. Who needs faster trains?

So far £110 billion and counting.

That’s your kids and grandchildren who will pay – we’re all be dead but the bill will not go away.

    • David says:

My god. Are you people really that that you don’t see this guy is massively trolling you!! 🤔🙄

      • Hilton query guy says:

I think most of them are savvy, I won’t say more savvy than you as it might seem impolite – but they know.

    • TGLoyalty says:

He’s a useless prat that would probably sell his mother for a couple extra quid for him and his mates/Tory donors.

      • bafan says:

        +1 TG.

      • Hilton query guy says:

But he worked long hours in a difficult situation. I can’t see that many other people would have done much better.

Very happy to see the Sajid Javid appointment – he is one of the best in that party. Future prime minister. Got balls and character and principles.

Next but one issue: social care.

        • r* says:

this is what happens when ppl have a shandy during the football 🙂
