We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Totally off topic, but I just saw the full Matt Hancock video and it has put me off my lunch. Keep away and make sure your children keep away 🙂

    • Harry T says:

It’s very cringeworthy. I managed to watch about five seconds.

    • TGLoyalty says:

      really accentuate his bald spot.

    • Save East Coast Rewards says:

BA to put it on all the screens in the lounges to cut down on their food bill? Although I’m sure alcohol consumption would go up as people try and forget what they’ve seen

    • Richie says:

      Was he forgetting about Karma?

    • Babyg says:

hats off to the bloke that he managed to find two women willing to kiss him…

      • Harrier25 says:

How is he still in his job today? The fella is a complete disgrace.

        • The cyclist says:

Good lord, has the world fallen in, I’m in complete agreement with Harrier:)

        • AJA says:

The reason is because his indiscretion is minor in comparison to his boss’s. It would be a bit rich to sack him for this especially as it is not a sackable offence. Having refused to get rid of him having called him f**g useless if he was forced to go now he could go to an employment tribunal and would win.

          • Harrier25 says:

Can cabinet officials go to an employment tribunal when sacked? After all, their main job and income comes from being an MP, which can only be taken away from him by the voting general public.

          • AJA says:

@ Harrier I don’t know as HR is not my speciality but seeing as being a cabinet minister attracts a salary of £67k on top of the pay of £82k for being a basic MP and being a minister of state is a further £32k I would think that you could claim for the loss of £99k if wrongfully sacked. We seem to have a strange morality though where we hold politicians to higher account than anyone else despite them not really being any better than the rest of us. People have affairs and don’t lose their jobs so why should he? His problem is that he was caught on cctv. I suspect his wife will divorce him and do nicely in the subequent financial settlement so he will pay for his indiscretion.

          • TGLoyalty says:

It’s not about an affair .. who gives a crap

It’s about his complete disregard for the rules he pushed through parliament and what’s probably a misuse of public funds/office

          • TGLoyalty says:

@AJA you’re completely missing the point.

It’s not about an affair it’s about the rule breaking. Rules his department advocated and I’m sure he had a big part of setting out.

Anyway he won’t win any tribunal as a relationship with a direct report or concealing a relationship with someone you work directly with is against most employers rules around conflict of interest

The ministerial code, states that politicians heading government departments are responsible for avoiding a potential conflict of interest.

According to points 7.1 and 7.2 in the code, “ministers must ensure that no conflict arises, or could reasonably be perceived to arise, between their public duties and their private interests, financial or otherwise”.

There is a clear conflict of interest.

          • AJA says:

@TGLoyalty my point was that BoJo won’t sack him but it’s irrelevant now as Hancock has just resigned. Saving BoJo the trouble.

      • AJA says:

🙂 He plainly has something that attracted the two women, can’t have been that useless. Reminds me of the wonderful Caroline Aherne as Mrs Merton asking Debbie McGee: ‘So, what first attracted you to the millionaire Paul Daniels?’ though in his case it might have been the other way around.

    • Luke says:

Just goes to show, you never know what’s in your smoke alarm. 🙂

      • Pete M says:

I would also be interested in the policies the government has on, ahem, romance in the workplace. I have seen 4 people at two separate companies sacked for getting it on in the photocopier room, so to speak, and getting caught.

        • Harrier25 says:

The Sun will release the photocopying room photos on tomorrow’s front page as their Sunday exclusive 😂

  • Ansy says:

Flying from heathrow to Edinburgh tomorrow at 12:40. Should I leave longer than usual to check in (taking check in luggage as well as carry on) or is the terminal pretty quiet at the moment?

  • Andy says:

What’s T5 like at the moment? Taking my first flight for months tomorrow up to Edinburgh. Checking a bag in as well. Would usually arrive an hour or so before but wondered if things are much slower checking in wise than usual due to Covid?

    • Optimus Prime says:

What time are you flying? It was empty last Saturday at 5am.

    • Save East Coast Rewards says:

On a domestic flight the bag drop procedure should be normal. You don’t have to show any evidence of tests or complete forms. My advice is if you have status remember that as well as being able to use the desks associated with your status you can also use the regular desks too. Although it’s normally quicker to use the F/J desks I have seen on occasion these areas busy but the regular desks empty. My tactic was if I had a bag to check and was coming from the station I’d walk towards the first class check in area but if I seen it quiet at the regular desks I’d drop my bags off there.

  • Keely says:

Morning anyone else having trouble with seat selection on MMB ? This is for a flight to Malta and I’m wondering if they are changing the size of the plane ….?

  • Save East Coast Rewards says:

I’ve got tickets to Silverstone booked many months ago when it looked a good bet that things would be closer to normal. So the F1 is going ahead (controversially!) my flights BLQ-LHR have not (yet) been cancelled but things are a bit of a pain. As well as the UK yellow zone quarantine + tests there’s also quarantine when you arrive back in Italy from the UK due to Delta variant.

I can work anywhere so my options could be to fly to the UK sooner and hope I’m negative on the day 5 test, otherwise could I persuade BA Holidays to change BLQ-LHR to IBZ/PMI-LHR and then have a holiday island hopping before coming to the UK as a green arrival.

Coming back to Italy the quarantine is only 5 days so isn’t major

    • TGLoyalty says:

Can think of worse things that being forced to spend 11 days in the Balearics but considering it’s on the watchlist Malta is probably the better bet.

  • DaveL says:

Morning all. Not my usual read but this article about the ‘invention’ of the wheelie suitcase was, I thought, fascinating: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2021/jun/24/mystery-of-wheelie-suitcase-how-gender-stereotypes-held-back-history-of-invention

    • Lady London says:

      Good read.

I still remember those little trollies we had to strap suitcases to when travelling by train. Any unbalanced suitcase kept falling off. Then when I used them in airports people often asked me for directions because in my little skirted blazer suit (often navy) that I wore for business in those days they thought I was crew.

For me the 4-wheeled spinner suitcase has been the great revolution. I’ll take the vulnerability of the wheels for the convenience.

    • AJA says:

I read that too. And like LL I had the folding luggage carrier though combined with the floppy sided suitcases fashionable at the time it was somewhat awkward. I never got asked for directions in airports though. I’m happy with the two wheeled design Tumi came up with. I also still have my cabin bag sized wheeled laptop/suitcase carrier that I bought in 2001.

  • Relaxo says:

Hi folks. PayPal related question. I’m buying something off a friend but wanted to pay him using credit card instead of cash through PayPal. I know you can send small amounts to friends & family for no charge. Does anyone know what the threshold is before a transaction might get flagged or rejected by PayPal?

    • TGLoyalty says:

There’s no threshold it’s all based upon PayPal’s systems and how they view it vs your other spend.

You’ll have someone say I send £1k to my wife every month no problem and another day PayPal locked their account for send a £100 to Rupert for his birthday

    • Will says:

Long history and regular purchase spend help a lot with this in my experience.

A warning though, I’ve had 1 previous card account withdrawn and another stern warning from amex for this so tread carefully.

If your playing games with it, do so knowing you may lose your card / PayPal eventually.

  • TGLoyalty says:

*another say PayPal locked their account for sending £100 to Rupert for his birthday
