The HfP chat thread – Saturday 26th June

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Has anyone used their shangri la points at the shard restaurants ? It seems oblix is excluded, at the others can anyone say if they used a restaurant and bar voucher or just did it with their shangri la member card. Thanks

    • roberto says:

Used mine in Gong. Showed the virtual card on my phone and paid the balance with my Amex getting the cash back.

Nice view, super service, great food and drinks. You get 90 mins. 3 people was £267 inc 12.5% auto tip for seven cocktails and four plates of food.

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

Yes, twice. No problems at all – just presented my card when the bill came. It’s just Gong and Ting (and the cafe on the ground floor I suppose). The other restaurants in the Shard aren’t anything to do with the hotel.

    • stairali says:

Used mine yesterday at Ting. Highly recommend it. Service was good, food was mostly good and overall I really enjoyed it. Cheese board was particularly good in comparison to similar places.

  • Luke says:

Has there been any update on the opening date for the LHR Centurion Lounge?

  • fivebobbill says:

Has anyone head of “POV by Marriott Bonvoy”?
Have an email here inviting me to sign up.

It’s a new members-only community – you don’t seem to get anything for joining.

      • fivebobbill says:

Cheers Rob, will maybe have a look, you never know 😉

  • Gareth says:

Not sure what to do with this one. Points stay at Hilton standard reward night. Pre called and arranged £ upgrade to junior suite as have wife and baby so loads more room. Correct room shown in app but checked in today told the diamond member in the suite decided to stay an extra night… and that’s it end of. Hotel full so given deluxe room instead- bigger bed. Given me two rooms tomorrow night with interconnecting door as alternative. I did kick off quite a bit at reception to hotel ops manager but just got a it is what it is…

    • H says:

File a guest assistance case with Hilton… do you have status with Hilton?

    • TGLoyalty says:

they either took payment at the time or confirmed they would at checkin not one of the estandby things?

      Disgraceful really.

    • Muhammad Abdullah says:

      What’s the hotel?

      • Gareth says:

It’s Reading, no payment taken but room did change on app and when I arranged I offered to pay at the time but receptionist said no we will take when you check in. Gold level membership!

    • Lord Doncaster says:

Did you pay the upgrade fee beforehand?

    • Char Char says:

Diamond alone doesn’t guarantee the room stays available so they obviously made that decision at your cost.

Got downgraded at a HI once and for a full refund

    • Luke F says:

I had a similar experience at Doubletree Leeds. Eventually got 30k points as compo

  • Aston100 says:

Anyone got a referral for Igloo Energy or PFP Energy please?

  • Hilton query guy says:

UK Hilton question, please. We have tons of Hilton points. Can we book a room on points for our son without my wife or myself turning up? I guess our son could say mum/ dad will turn up later (he wouldn’t be a very convincing blagger & we mum/ dad are not in UK) – but would the Hilton possibly be difficult about our son not being the points account holder?

    Thanks.

    • Rob says:

Easier if he claims to be you. Plan B is booking for 2 with him named as 2nd guest with a note saying he will arrive first.

    • Genghis says:

Call Hilton and they’ll book it for you no problem in your son’s name.

      • Hilton query guy says:

Thanks both. I will give the call a whizz, otherwise pay. The problem is that him trying to blag it would probably fail, knowing my son – youthful & unable yet to chance it. (I took a lot more risks when I was 18, I bet some of us could tell a few stories.) Flight is early next morning & I guess he wouldn’t enjoy sleeping on some park bench so best be safe.

  • BJ says:

Seems that poor man has resigned!

    • Aston100 says:

Poor guy, will have to survive on just his MP salary of £82k plus various expenses.

      • The cyclist says:

Errrrr, you are forgetting the company directorships ( see members interests)

      • Lord Doncaster says:

82k is a pittance to many on here, yet the same peoplr are desperate for their
        free 99 Nectar points from Esso… 😂

  • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

You can buy a gift card online to spend in the restaurant. Same checkout as the boxes so I expect it would work.
