The HfP chat thread – Thursday 24th June

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Starling and Virgin Money Current Accounts both have free overseas ATM withdrawals – does anyone know if they are the exact same using the MC rate, or is there a difference in the exchange rate (i.e. once of them add a fee?)

  • Jack says:

Can I book an ihg hotel for my son with my points. He will have his family with him so not ideal booking him as second guest and sneaking around all weekend. Thanks

    • SteveJ says:

Yes, you should contact the hotel directly after booking to tell them. IHG have always been fine with this in my experience.

      • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

I agree, but NB T&C’s are that you need to call up to book a reward night for a third party.

Thanks a lot! I am in Lisbon and was going to quarantine for 10 days in Scotland from next week, I managed to book some decent BA flights back for the end of my supposed quarantine before the price went up by almost 3x

  • @mkcol says:

@meta Can’t think why your comment disappeared.

Having read what you wrote: “Just to repeat it for posterity. The new Curio and Conrad are on one of my favourite beaches in Europe. It’s just really beautiful with the tower and white sand. Three years ago, my partner and I decided to do the cheapest possible holiday as had the expiring 241 voucher. We stayed 10 nights at HI Cagliari near the airport for 10k points at the time. We rented a car and drove around and it was one of the best trips we’ve done. There is so much to see – from prehistoric ruins (nuraghi), small cities to sandy, mostly white, beaches.

We’re now thinking going again, now staying in bit more luxury.”

I can confirm I shall be heading to the same area with my hubby, you’ve helped seal the deal.

  • Anna says:

France has bowed to Frau Merkel and reintroduced quarantine for UK arrivals. Oddly enough, they both have imminent elections!

    • Luke says:

      Does this include the vaccinated?

    • The Lord says:

She’s not going to be happy when she sees Mallorca on our green list. Isn’t that number 1 German holiday destination?

      • Anna says:

Spain, Portugal and Greece are going to be rubbing their hands, she’ll be threatening to claw back the bailout money next …

      • Luke says:

I personally think we should call it a day and put Germany on the red list… 😉

        • meta says:

Portuguese president just announced that they will likely be following Merkel. Belgium also added UK on the red list. Hong Kong puts UK on the very high risk country.

          • Anna says:

She’s obviously been on the blower and mentioned the bail out money. Their recent outbreak was in Lisbon, the vast majority of UK tourists were in the Algarve.

          • meta says:

New local restrictions in Algarve as of today as well.

          • meta says:

From tomorrow, to enter or go out of Algarve you need a negative test. All restaurants and cafes must close by 3:30pm over the weekend and supermarkets every day only till 7pm. Reviewed weekly.

          • Anna says:

Also probably connected to Portugal not going back on the green list this time.

          • Anna says:

Portugal required a negative test up till a couple of weeks ago though? I can’t really understand why they dropped that of their cases were starting to rise.

          • David says:

Anna (and others), with the greatest respect, this type of insulting language is getting a bit pathetic really.
It’s hardly surprising: our numbers are rocketing and other countries want to keep spread as low as possible. Its not rocket science, and it’s also not some great political wheeze to punish the UK for Brexit or something else. It’s sovereign nations making their own public health decisions… if you disagree fine, but maybe stick to why rather than deviating into tabloid sabre rattling and conspiracy theories?

          • Lord Doncaster says:

I’m curious but are Frau Merkel’s clothes seen as fashionable in Germany? She never wears anything else….

          • Rhys says:

Are the Queen’s clothes seen as fashionable here? 😉

          • David says:

Thinking of getting some, Lord D? I suspect she looks far better in them than you would.

  • Anna says:

Also confirmed that double jabbed and their children won’t have to quarantine on return from amber countries but no date confirmed.

  • Aston100 says:

I seem to have a 15k MR (for me) referral offer (instead of the normal 6k) on my Amex PRG.
I presume others also have it and this has been covered at some point recently?

Sorry not been keeping up with all the comments this week.

    • Aston100 says:

      Ignore.
I see this is the 15k for you and 32k for a friend that has done the rounds recently.
Not sure why I’ve only just spotted it on my card. Pretty sure it wasn’t there earlier this week.

  • Craig says:

Starting to look a bit more promising for my cruise next month. Royal Caribbean are providing free testing through Eurofins, but will credit us if we make our own arrangements. Randox at East Midlands is £60 and the cruise line will add £100 each to our account. It’s not just about the money but the reliability and convenience. Any thoughts from the collective?
