Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Thursday 24th June

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Any way of stacking offers for majestic wines?

  • MW says:

I’ve hit my 10k spend to get 100k Avios under the Bus Plat promo. So far, I had only 40k bonus. I have one 3k transaction coming back (which will still leave me over 10k after refund) – should I wait for it to return and call them up for my other 60k?

    • will says:

I only had 40k post too. Went onto chat and asked for clarity on it, insisted I applied in time but it took them some days to approve.

Been told to wait (can’t remember if it was 7 or 10 days) and to check back pending result of escalation.

There’s a note on a HfP article about this:

      • MW says:

Someone in another chat thread suggested I call rather than use chat as it seems to result in a quicker/better outcome.

I was wondering more about the issue with a returning transaction and whether that’s likely to cause any issues.

  • Max says:

Is anyone here with Igloo energy? Is it possible to just cancel the direct debt to pay the full balance with Amex each month?

    • DJ says:

I don’t think so. But you can over pay your account with Amex.

    • Andrew M says:

You can ask them to reduce the direct debit. I managed to get it down to £15 via the chat function on their website but I think someone on here managed £5. I assume it helps if you have a sizable credit balance with them.

    • FFoxSake says:

Probably best to leave the DD active and negotiate via email.
I got my DD down to £1 after overpaying the account so that I had over 1 year of bills covered (and mentioning that I was able to do that before with Octopus might have helped!).

    • Alan S says:

I put £1000 in my account via Amex and then emailed them asking them to reduce my DD to £1.

They did it no problem, with a small comment that they don’t normally do it and I need to make sure I keep the account in credit.

You obviously get the benefit of the Amex payments, but also the 3% interest on any account credit up to £1000.

    • Jane says:

I got mine down to £1 but it took quite a bit of pushing and I was 500 in credit

  • Degsy says:

Just had notification of cancellation by VS of my flight to Seattle on 05AUG – sounds like Virgin is not optimistic about the Summer opening up…..

    • Anna says:

US politicians have been making noises about not wanting Brits to bring (more, as they already have some) cases of the Delta variant, so I don’t think it’s looking hopeful until autumn at the earliest. Also they want to hold us over a barrel about Brexit, NI etc, of course.

      • Lady London says:

Why would the Americans want to do that?

      • Mike says:

The Americans will have the same % of Delta variant as the UK by the end of July. At this point any country with double figure % of Delta is pretty much guaranteed that it will become dominant.

      • Doommonger says:

That should read the Biden administration, not US Politicians. Plenty of my US colleagues are as frustrated as we are regarding travel. I have not been able to travel to my head office since March 2020. This is a do nothing President. I mean, two press conferences in six months?!!

    • Connor says:

Flight to Washington (DC) on the 14th not been cancelled. No doubt it’ll be soon though.

  • Russ says:

Not got time to go through all the comments but found ‘Spend £1,000 or more, get £200 back’ from Easy Jet on Gold card. Apologies if already mentioned.

  • Charlie says:

Any tips on making a night at the Shangri-la Shard Hotel any cheaper? Wanna use the amex offer but weekend stay still coming in at £600+ !!

    • meta says:

Stay Sunday to Monday, it’s usually cheaper.

    • Rob says:

Prices are hugely up this Summer at all smart places unfortunately. You can book via Emyr and get some extra bits thrown in:

Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability
Daily buffet breakfast for two guests per bedroom in Ting Restaurant or via in-room dining
$100 USD equivalent Food & Beverage Credit to be utilized at TING Restaurant & Lounge during stay (not combinable, no cash value if not redeemed in full)
Early check-in, subject to availability and Guaranteed 4pm check-out
      Complimentary Wi-Fi

Lot of value in the 4pm check-out if only staying one night.

    • YC says:

FHR/Virtuoso + Golden circle double pts/nights. Not any cheaper but good benefits. Split payment over multiple cards if sufficient spend for multiple Amex offers

    • Neil Donoghue says:

I’ve got a stay in August booked with Emyr for £586 on a Saturday night. The new promotion with double base points makes the return a little better but I am in a similar boat as you. In the end, I opted for transferring SQ points to Golden Circle and decided to make the most of it. Will have $500 worth of food and drink vouchers for the night including the $100 from Emyr.

  • Sina says:

is it possible to downgrade from BAPP to BA card online, the same way that upgrades are possible?

    • Andrew says:

Best to call to see if they offer you anything to stay as BAPP and take that then downgrade anyway
