The HfP chat thread – Thursday 17th June

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Craig, have you heard anything about your Royal Caribbean cruise you won. It seems most of the cruise lines have overbooked, assuming restrictions would be lifted on 21st June. Because they haven’t been, they’re having to cancel passenger numbers over 1000.

MSC made an announcement yesterday and started cancelling people, P&O have done it today, and also people reporting emails from RC asking if they’ll move free of charge to cruises in August.

    • Craig says:

Just had an email offering to switch from the 4-night to later 5,6 & 8 night cruises. None of the dates work so sitting tight at the moment and hoping the offer of a free 8 night cruise works for lots of people who had booked. I’m not overly optimistic but I have checked in, fingers crossed at the moment. If we can’t go I’ll be looking for last minute IHG hotels on the south coast.

      • Jody says:

Hopefully others will want to move. I would if I’d been lucky enough to win one, but then I don’t have to worry about leave as I’m retired. Most emergency services workers will struggle to move their leave at such short notice.

Really hope enough people can move and you still get your cruise.

        • Craig says:

Thanks Jody. I hope so, at the end of the day there are worse things that could happen in life and we will salvage something.

Can someone go for their vaccination while on the 10 days quarantine having returned from Spain?

    • Mark says:

      …with a negative Day 2 test.

    • Colin MacKinnon says:

Essential medical care allowed – and the powers that be seen to be stating the that vaccines are pretty essential.

      • Yuff says:

My wife was explicitly told last week she could not have her 2nd jab in exactly that scenario.
She got it on Tuesday and was made to feel like royalty as she was the only one there having the AZ jab……🤣

        • Yorkieflyer says:

Have you been abroad to a yellow list country in the last 10 days not being a question you’ll be asked at an appointment

    • Yorkieflyer says:

      Yes it’s a medical appointment

I was lucky enough to get Wimbledon mens Centre Court semi final tickets for 9/7 – I was refreshing page for ages before. Then the link didn’t work till 13.03, didnt read info about a code as too excited, code came through at 13.02 – had 17000 in front of me – then found code before I timed out!
Any suggestions for hotel stay – thinking possibly Indigo Kensington ( currently booked for 33000 points0 but happy to change.

    • Rob says:

Hotel works fine – walk out of the door, straight into Earls Court tube and you’re in Southfields in 10-15 minutes.

Going to Porto for a week. Is it worth getting Ambassador for the IC Porto and are there family sizes rooms available with the weekend cert?

  • Andrew says:

Jersey (Channel Islands) has changed entry requirements (again) and all of UK is Red from 29 June so only sensible to travel if fully vaccinated.

There is a reasonable chance we will be able to travel more freely between the US and the UK by the end of the summer, America’s chief medical adviser has told ITV News.

Asked by News At Ten Presenter Tom Bradby if by this September, people could expect to travel more freely between the two countries again, Dr Anthony Fauci said he believed this was “a reasonably good prediction”.

Nothing concrete but better than nothing for those of us looking for UK-US travel sooner rather than later.

    • James Vickers says:

September has always been my guess if you’re considering where rates of vaccination will be by then and time to establish what’s required for travel

  • Joe says:

Plenty of business seats to Mauritius dropped over the last couple of hours (alongside the Male ones posted earlier).

    • Rob says:

If you want to know who has the May 2022 Bank Holiday week seats, it’s me 🙂

      • Joe says:

Haha! Someone stole my dates just as I was confirming payment, but I’ve got my second choice !

  • FM says:

Was due to stay at Heathrow Staybridge suites in August but (points) reservations have just been canceled. Genghis, you mentioned you got some compensation in the same situation, would you mind if I asked what they gave?
