The HfP chat thread – Thursday 17th June

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

no code but have been in the LTA waiting room for 38 minutes and it seems only 20% of the way there – are others in same boat?

    • Sam G says:

absolute dogs dinner – I imagine it’s because so many people are in the queue either a) not realising they needed a code or b) like me – never received the code. So the capacity isn’t being freed up quickly by people actually managing to buy tickets.Twitter is flooded with complaints

      • CG says:

Worked ok for me once you got to the front but you won’t be able to purchase without a code. My email with the code came in at 1.02pm so just after sale opened. Codes can only be used once.

        • Sam G says:

I queued and waited around in case the code came through as I had seen on Twitter people were getting them well past 1pm but no luck!

          • Sam G says:

If anyone from Wimbledon is reading this please immediately fire whichever overpriced agency came up with a plan to send presumably 100,000s of emails to new to you email addresses all at once to a tight deadline…. I imagine Rob & Rhys would be happy to give you some emailer tips in exchange for some nice tickets 🙂

          • Rob says:

We already have some nice tickets 🙂

          • Sam G says:

Nice! Enjoy! I’ll be at home grumpy watching on the TV

    • Olivia says:

Received code before 1pm, other half has just received his right now (14:29)! Managed to get nice court 1 seats together but nothing available once I got through for centre that was together.

      • mr_jetlag says:

got my grounds passes for day 12, but Ticketmaster is the devil incarnate.

  • ankomonkey says:

Data point for anyone who cares – applied for new British passport on Thursday of last week and it arrived today. Having read of delays and it possibly taking 10 weeks, I rushed to do it after half-term break, but received fastest turnaround of passport I’ve ever had.

  • Rhys says:

Interesting detail in the Public Health England stats released today: cases are up in all age groups, hospitalisations are marginally up, but deaths are still decreasing….

    • Steve says:

Since deaths lag cases by ~ 8 weeks, and 8 weeks ago it was still a lockdown, this doesn’t seem surprising?

      • Steve says:

(although I agree they will go up less than they did last year compared to cases, because of vaccination)

    • Anna says:

In the boroughs which were first identified as Delta variant hotspots, the rise in cases is slowing down noticeably, so hopefully the same pattern will be seen in other areas in coming weeks.

      • Lady London says:

Yes and interestingly a few days ago here, someone said that in areas where younger people are being vaccinated, overall cases of any age group are going down.

    • TGLoyalty says:

The most interesting bits are the vaccine stats.

90% of over 50’s have had both doses, with London being the lowest at 82%
62% of over 25’s have had both doses, with London being the lowest at 48%

96% of over 50’s have had a 1st dose, no where is notably lower.
84% of over 25’s have had a 1st dose, with London being the lowest at 75%

However, many other regions show more than 100% coverage of age groups which could account for why london is lower.

@Steve the delta variant has been circulating in the community since mid April yet deaths continue to fall

      • Steve says:

Sure – but unless I am wrong about the expected lag of cases -> deaths, we’re only just seeing deaths now from people infected around 8 weeks ago. Hopefully deaths are becoming decoupled from infections, but death stats now aren’t telling us anything useful about recent delta infections.

        • TomG says:

Death is 2-8 weeks after showing symptoms, not starting at 8 weeks.

      • John Gallagher says:

        More than 100%?

        • TGLoyalty says:

ONS estimate of ages in regions might not accurately reflect the actual situation right now

Or as I said lots Londoners are actually from other parts of the U.K. and May have gone back home etc

      • Tracey says:

London has a more transient population, a sizeable portion are registered but not actually here.

    • TJones says:

The interesting thing that Whitty said was that a map of areas worst affected by Covid and a map of areas with the highest child deaths in 1850 would look very similar. Covid is worst in deprived areas, and these places have suffered health problems for years.

  • Reney says:

Platinum amex question, first supplemental Plat card is free, then I think you can choose free gold or green ones. Do the gold ones get the deliveroo offer?

    • DJ says:

      No, just different colour.

    • Andrew says:

We wish – imagine that 5x£10 per month deliveroo credit! The benefits relate to the Platinum charge card insurance for these supplementary cards and do not include any of the benefits of the gold credit card product which has the deliveroo offer on.

  • Pete M says:

If you want to bring your second vaccine dose forward, but haven’t because you have to cancel your appointment first… you can use the new availability checker before you cancel to make sure you’ll get an appointment sooner: https://twitter.com/fordie/status/1405281727761711109

    • Sam G says:

you have to click the first “cancel” button and then it’ll show. It only shows your current vaccine centre though which is a bit of a shame but I know these guys are working hard on this stuff and it’s been a miracle it’s all worked so well really, so no complaints from me!

      • idrive says:

not for me, i select any random postcode (near office) , left options empty and could select at least 5 different options.

    • TicknBash says:

Cancelled and brought my second dose forward by 4 weeks yesterday.

  • Rory says:

Anyone had any experience with getting their first (or 2nd) dose of the vaccine outside the Uk? Currently in the USA and they’re giving them out to anyone, but not gonna be here for 3 weeks. Anyone had their first dose in the USA, then 2nd in the UK?

    • Wollhouse says:

This would be great to know! As I wrote to my doctors office about 8 weeks ago to ask that very question. I asked if I came in with my vaccine card completed would they be able to upload it onto the system. Still waiting for a response…

    • MW says:

A friend of mine who has been yoyo-ing between the UK and Cyprus for work for the last few months had this issue, brought it up with his UK GP (was hoping to get his 2nd here) and was told it was not possible.

He ended up getting both of his vaccinations in Cyprus (which he was able to do before his age group was vaccinated in the UK).

      • Wollhouse says:

And do you know if his doctor’s office was then able/willing to upload his info so he can have it digitally?

        • MW says:

He has got some kind of cert now (paper?) but I don’t think it’s been added to his NHS record.

His main gripe about it as it doesn’t mean anything in the UK so he has to isolate and do “catch and release” test on Day 5 to escape.

    • Colin MacKinnon says:

Son is studying in Colorado. Has had vaccines there, but was offered vaccine over here in Scotland.

Called to cancel the appointment, and was told he’d be marked as a “refused” because there was no box for “vaccinated somewhere else”

      • Wollhouse says:

Ah, that probably answers my question. Guess it will be a piece of card then!

    • Tracey says:

Lots of people have done this. It’s relatively easy to get your GP to note the vaccine on your record, it’s harder to get a certificate generated.

    • TGLoyalty says:

U.K. is now giving them out to everyone too. Is it really worth the hassle?

  • Sam G says:

Lots of J Male seats just been added

    • TJ says:

+1 Wide open availability in 2022 in J. Just secured a couple of seats.

      • Babyg says:

i was tempted (lots with 4+ J seats), but Ive only got hilton currency ATM, and conrad has taken water villas off redemption for the start of the year, and nothing at WA really…

    • YC says:

Has BA waived change fees like VA?

      • Sam G says:

        Yes (under book with confidence)

        • YC says:

I have a lloyds voucher booking and CS was saying it does not cover BWC… Anyone got them to waive change fees for this type of booking?

    • Toppcat says:

Thanks so much for this – just booked 10 days in April 22!

    • ashraj says:

Thanks for the heads up booked for February 2021

  • bill says:

    Hilton.com/ConnectingRooms

apparently you can make a confirmed booking for connecting rooms

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

Excellent news. Why all hotels couldn’t have implemented this 20 years ago in an age of computersied inventory is a mystery. to me.
