The HfP chat thread – Thursday 17th June

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Also Hilton do 5 nights for price of 4 on points. I know you said 3 nights, not sure if the above would change your plan.

  • Maximus says:

Had an email from Solihull outlining new ts&cs: “We’ve added new wording to explain that you must not pay us more than you owe on your account.” Would this negate DT’s hack of avoiding interest for Che top-ups from Solihull (by accumulating a balance on Solihull and then paying the balance twice on the same day, then topping up Che by the value of the Solihull balance)?

    • John says:

I’m pretty sure that if you do all of this in quick succession it doesn’t matter if you top up 1 minute before paying it off, or pay it off 1 minute before you top up, for the purposes of calculating interest.

The reason to accumulate a balance is so that you have the ability to pay it off immediately, as without a balance the transaction needs to post first

    • Memesweeper says:

They’ve blocked accounts before for going into credit, so I think this is just getting g the T&Cs aligned

      • Anna says:

My donations to Che will just be going out weekly now and being paid off the next day.

    • Harry T says:

I don’t know why anyone bothers to top up Che when there are much less risky places to deposit funds that don’t require paying off quickly to avoid interest…

      • Maximus says:

Might you have an example, Harry?

        • @mkcol says:

          Monese

Ernie, Ernie, Ernie. Or any other friendly savings account. Why deal in hundreds and thousands with a risk of fee’s and account locks – when you can do low 5 figure sums monthly with ease.

  • John says:

Late to the party but were there no other suitable hotels for less than US$750?

    • CG says:

Thanks again for replies. Much as I would love to drop the kids off with their grandparents for a few more lights I think we’re probably pushing things with the 3 nights so won’t be able to take advantage of the 5 night offer. My wife is fairly picky on hotels and could find another she preferred for less.

    • Rob says:

This is Bournemouth …. Very big gap between Hilton (Exec lounge, Skybar, indoor pool, well regarded restaurant) and the rest.

Also better located – most hotels are basically on the main road which runs above the town and it is a steep and fairly long walk down. Hilton is 60 seconds to the beach.

      • CG says:

Thanks Rob just have to hope the points appear before availability goes…

        • njb says:

We have jsut moved to Lower Parkstone – an in between place for Bournemouth/Sandbanks?Poole.
Bournemouth is OK in parts – a sense of old regency style mixed in with poverty/drug rehab places.
Choose your location carefully is my advice.
If you head out of Bournemouth to Ashley Cross/Westbourne/Sandbanks/Branksome its nice.
Other areas can be dodgy – Boscombe especially.
The Hilton is probably the better location.

Uk Quarantine: we flew back from Spain to UK Fri night and flew out to Malta Saturday morning less than 24hrs. So completed all the forms clearly indicating that we are in transit.

Since then I have received a call everyday to check if we are in quarantine, every time i explain that we are not even in the country and they say “we will update system”. This morning someone turned up at the door and i had to tell him over the Ring that there is no one home as we are away.

    • Anna says:

Meanwhile there are probably people here breaching the isolation rules and not even getting a phone call!

      • Anna says:

I wouldn’t bother answering the phone any more; you’ve told them enough times and it’s up to them to prove any breach of regulations, not vice versa.

    • Paul says:

Expect a fine.. and there is no means of appealing it other than going to court. This was highlighted on BBC around a week ago. It is shameful but this is what happens when you put a serial failure in charge of a major project under a incompetent government.

      • Anna says:

Again, it’s up to them to prove that a breach. If no-one answered the door, how are they going to prove Ant wasn’t there?
If the person who turned up this morning was a police employee, they will hopefully have slightly more initiative than the people on the phone, who I’m guessing are the same minimum wage recruits as the T & T staff, and make sure records are updated as the police won’t want their officers making unnecessary calls to houses where they know no-one is going to be home.

        • Ant says:

It was definitely not police, it was just one of the new recruits. And i explained to him that we are not at home as we left within 24 hours as noted on the passenger locator form and as advised to everyone who called me in the last 5 days!

        • Ali says:

Yes the police are well known for focusing on all the right issues all of the time.

  • Lady London says:

Nutmeg being bought by JP Morgan

    • BuildBackBetter says:

Looks like Chase will offer a full suite of products. Unlike Marcus.

  • Mark says:

Rob/Rhys wonder if you can help or advise on this issue. I signed up for the Amex business platinum when the 100k offer was on, hit the spend within 3 months and still no bonus, spoke to Amex several times who advised that it will be applied to the account after having the cards for 3 months. 3 months passed and still no bonus, just called up and now they’re saying it’s 3 months after the qualifying spend goes through, so the example they have was if you spent the 10k at the end of the 3 months you have to wait an additional 3 months for the bonus forcing you to keep the card for 6 months. I went through that the t&cs only
Mention points being paid after the 3 months only to be told I didn’t understand the t&cs. Where do I go next?

    • Rob says:

If you’ve had nothing it is because your spend has been totalled incorrectly. Ask the agent how much spend the system shows you have done – will be under £10k. Lots of people are getting this issue.

      • Mark says:

I asked this exact question and he confirmed my spent is £16596 so no shadow of a doubt that I qualify.

        • Rob says:

If he added it up manually then obviously it is correct. He needs to look into the system for the carrying value showing towards the voucher. That said, I’ve never heard of one being 60% out.

    • MW says:

Also remember that the card fee does not count towards the qualifying spend.

  • Dan says:

Big thank you to Adder in the comments yesterday. I had an issue with a BA Holidays care hire only booking. You can cancel here – http://www.carhire-ba.com. You will need the reference number in the certificate (12345678GB9) not the BA reference (ABCDEF).

  • Mark says:

Anyone have a code to purchase the Wimbledon tickets and can share it?

    • Jonathan says:

It would be nice if the codes they sent out actually worked for the people they were supposed to work for.
