We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Wimbledon tickets going on sale soon. I’m happy to be part of a test event. I’ve already got an email about silverstone.
Its as if I’ve finally found staying in uk can be actually fun.

    • Michael C says:

Also just received an email requesting deposit for our US Open seats!

      • Degsy says:

Ooh lucky you (assuming you can actually get there). We went a few years ago – fabulous experience, especially the evening sessions. Much more fan-friendly than Wimbledon.

    • Mark says:

Only 32k in front of me in the virtual queue now!

      • mr_jetlag says:

18k in front of me 🙂 going for grounds passes only, as it’s more fun to be wandering about on the finals days…

        • SteveJ says:

Darn it, only registered for myWimbledon today, so no code for me 🙁

      • Yorkshire rich says:

I had no signal at 13:10, rang my friend to log into my Wimbledon account and apparently I was 34,000 in the queue, I think I’ll just try again next year

        • Rob says:

Next year the tickets are going to the people who didn’t get tickets last year due to the cancellation. There won’t be much of a ballot, if any.

  • Harry T says:

If you need to buy 150,000 points for 1500 USD, then I don’t see the value. But I’m unsure if you need to buy that many points because you mentioned the price for 75,000 points but said the hotel costs 50,000 points per night.

    • CG says:

Thanks sorry my email was very unclear. In the promotion if I buy 75000 I get another 75000 free so I get 150k for $750. Meaning I should theoretically be able to buy the 3 nights for $750 instead of £912. Unless I’m missing something….

      • Peter K says:

Sounds like a good points deal. If you have amex platinum then you can get Hilton gold which gives free breakfast for you and one other person in your room (if chosen as your myway benefit).

        • Chris Heyes says:

Peter K. I’m Gold Hilton Three of us get free breakfast, but might be at Hiltons discretion.
But saying that we have always had it, so unsure if its per room ?

        • Dan says:

Remember to book breakfast for each day when you check in. They don’t mention it and turn you away in Bournemouth for not booking!

    • trader363 says:

There’s a 100% buy points offer on atm.

I would say it’s a good deal £912 vs ~£535 (assuming you would have paid the £304pn in the first place)

  • George K says:

Lloyds ex-Avios card data point: Called to see about retention offers and got the 12-month 0% interest deal applied. Agent felt it was an either/or deal between that and the no forex fees (I know someone said they got both) and I didn’t push further.

  • TicknBash says:

    Data point:
Have an offer on Easyjet holiday on my Gold.
Spend £1k and get £200 back.

  • Genghis says:

You say you’ve got the Amex Hilton offer? On multiple cards? Can that be used? If so, take that into account in the comparison for the cash rate.

Once done this, assuming you’d book the Hilton anyway with cash, then buying the points and then making a points booking, based on what you’ve said, could make sense. Note you do earn points back from Hilton cash bookings but probably not enough to make up the difference – but run the numbers anyway.

If buying points, points should post straight away – log out and log back in if not.

Get yourself an Amex Platinum card and then sign up to Hilton Gold for free breakfast. You can even earn a sign up bonus and then only pay for a month or two of the fees (refunded pro-rata).

    • Harry T says:

I agree with grand master Genghis. Also worth noting that if you have multiple Hilton offers on your Amex cards, hotels will usually let you split the bill across multiple cards at checkout, so you could save a few multiples of £50. Worth factoring into your equation.

    • CG says:

Thanks for all the helpful replies. I don’t have the platinum yet but have the BAPP. If I took out the platinum after having made the booking (planning to book today) would I still get the free breakfast or do I have to have had the platinum before making the booking?

      • Ikaz says:

You don’t need it before you book, but you need to apply for the hilton status and for it to be applied before you stay, I am not sure how long that takes these days

        • CG says:

          Thanks!
I purchased the points. Not in my account yet but hopefully won’t be long.

        • WaynedP says:

Data Point on length of time to process Amex Plat Status benefits:

I applied late on Saturday night (11pm) for MeliaRewards and Hilton Honours status.

MeliaRewards confirmation arrived midday the next Tuesday (1.5 business days)
Hilton Honours confirmation arrived 10pm the next Tuesday (2 business days)

Add a possible extra 24 hours if you think that any processing might have been done on the intervening Sunday.

      • Dave says:

It’s the Hilton gold that comes with Platinum you need. Having gold at time of stay would be ok.

      • Sundar says:

You dont need at booking, status is usually recognized a few days before stay when rooms get allotted. If u have before check-in that is sufficient.
However, platinum card doesnt automatically come with the hotel status. Once u register ur platinum card online, you need to request for each hotel status, website wasnt fully working sometime back. This may take some time to sort.

I see regularly-mentioned-here Wise is planning a stock market listing. £5bn valuation apparently…

  • Rooster says:

I called Amex yesterday approx 16:30 as my plat charge card is coming up for renewal in 2 months and I haven’t had a retention bonus since last renewal.
Was offered nothing & told to call back closer to renewal which I was surprised about!

    • Dan says:

I just called them on the back of this message to see what I can get. Offered 35,000 without any fuss or need for reasoning on my part. Try calling a different agent?

    • Gavin says:

I also phoned up this afternoon (account opened a couple of months ago) and was offered 35k points straight away. I was initially talking to someone abroad I think, but was passed over to another agent with a British accent.

      • Jonathan says:

I got denied on Tuesday so went ahead & cancelled. Got 2 lots of MR’s last year but the agent didn’t mention them, just said no retention offers. Had Platinum for 4 years but not worth the fee at the moment.

  • MKB says:

All my previous BA cancellations were done by phone. I’ve just done one (for travel tomorrow) through Manage My Booking.

I was surprised that, following the “Cancellation Options” link directly from the booking, it asked me to enter my Booking Ref on a fairly generic and basic webform. After clicking “Submit”, I got a confirmation screen, but I’ve received no email, and the MMB is still inviting me to check in.

    Is this normal?
