The HfP chat thread – Thursday 17th June

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

1st shop small credit whilst visiting friends in Scotland! The Swallow Cafe in Dunoon, if you’re passing, serves very nice ice cream sundaes and takes Amex and it works, yay!!

  • Yuff says:

I filled out the refund form at Ryanair, for a flight they cancelled, on May 11th, after a few chase ups they finally got round to looking at the refund and have given me a voucher for the cancelled flights.
I have tweeted I don’t want a voucher I want the payment credited back to my credit card, no reply yet.

  • Oli says:

I need to do a Covid antigen test in Heathrow T2 on Thursday next week at 7am before catching a flight to France which check-in closes at 8:20am. I need to do it that day as I will also be using the test on my return to the UK on the following Sunday. The choice seems to between Expresstest (£35 / results within 30 minutes) or Collinson (£40 / results within 45 minutes).
What’s people experience with this providers in Heathrow?

  • Bobri says:

Could the community kindly remind the UK number for Marriott Bonvoy to transfer the points to another account?

  • DK says:

Is it possible to cancel a reward booking for FTV and immediately use it to book new reward flights while still on the phone?

    • Pete M says:

You should be able to cancel it online, get the FTV fairly immediately (at least in my experience) and then call. Wait times have been atrocious recently, though. But from what the agent said to me earlier, your solution should also work.

      • DK says:

@Pete M Thanks. I know I can request FTV online

      • Trish says:

I did this last week, cancelled the reward booking, the agent waited for the FTV and booked the new flights. Very helpful BA representative.

    • AndyW says:

      Yes I have done this

      • AndyW says:

Should add there was a small time lag, agent just waited for me, but maybe I got an especially helpful one

My Virgin + card renewal is Aug 4th – today received an email with updated terms which will apply from that date
    They include
    treated as cash advances
    • adding money to a prepaid card, virtual card or e-money account.

    Does that mean Curve ??

    • stevenhp1987 says:

Was some talk a couple of days ago.

I doubt Curve itself (normal transactions) would be affected as they would no doubt use the MCC. But that remains to be seen…

I’d imagine anything MCC 6012 would be affected.

    • Alan says:

      Certainly sounds like it.
I need to get moving with my Ernie purchases.

    • SteveJ says:

I wouldn’t have thought so, as you’re not “adding money” to Curve

      • John says:

Actually you are, but you then use curve’s emoney to do something else within 3 seconds.

    • Jonathan says:

I used a che top up once for a test of £20 using my VACC+ (without bendy) and got hit with some unwanted charges, and didn’t get any Virgin (Flying Club) Points in return as well!

    • meta says:

Why discrimination? US hasn’t approved AZ yet.

      • meta says:

It’s also the same with Sputnik, Sinovac and others which haven’t been approved. Every country decides its own rules which vaccine is acceptable.

    • LS says:

It is absolutely OK to discriminate, as long as there is a reason for it.
The vaccine is not as good as Pfizer/moderna, especially in terms of preventing transmission.

      • Pete M says:

If this becomes a wider thing then not many Brits (particularly the older ones with money) will be going to the US!

    • marcw says:

Well, the FDA has not approved the AZ vaccine. I think this will be a major issue for re-opening the UK –> US market (also for EU –> US, but less than the UK).

      • Rhys says:

…which would be absurd. Isn’t AZ as effective as J&J which the US has approved?

Approving for use vs acknowledging effectiveness might be two different things.

        • marcw says:

You don’t have to tell me that. It’s how absurd sometimes politics is.

    • Rich says:

This is what ambassadors are for, isn’t it? And our special relationship.

I would’ve thought it won’t take much to get AZ on the approved list for tourists, even if it’s not approved for use.

  • Jimmy Mac says:

Looks like Easyjet are pinning their hopes on the domestic market.

LPL-BOH (Bournemouth), flights have now been loaded for the summer.

    • Sam G says:

that is absolutely random! Looks like Belfast and Edinburgh as well. They’re announcing 12 domestic routes today according to the Telegraph – not sure what is new but they’ve got Newquay – Inverness / Glasgow / Gatwick / Manchester / Birmingham and lots of Jersey routes on sale
