The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 15th June

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Finally ordered a physical Revolut Card.
    A premium one.

What turned up was a piece of cardboard with a chip embedded.
I’ve got my Amex Platinum in my other hand and am shaking my head in disbelief.

Have Revolut cards always been like this, or have they started cheaping out recently?

    • The cyclist says:

Don’t be silly, its not cardboard, as soon as it got wet or you dribbled on it it would go all limp and be useless in an ATM.

      • Aston100 says:

        How do you know?

        • Blenz101 says:

Because those who have the card know. It is plastic with a brushed matt finish, silver embossed MC and Revolt logos. No embossed card numbers. Can be seen on the website.

A metal card is also offered by Revolt for the kind of to**er who would shake their head that a credit card was made of plastic / mistake plastic for wood.

          • Aston100 says:

Do I know you from somewhere?
            Your rudeness is surprising.

    • Toby says:

They’ve always seemed a bit flimsy to me!

    • TGLoyalty says:

      Can’t be cardboard lol

  • Chelseafi says:

I’m sure already mentioned on here but just seen DVLA Road Tax accepting Amex again.

  • Hbommie says:

SLH offer £100 off £300 combined with a 3 for 2 last weekend at Monkey Island Estate.
Very nice place, SLH member benefits recognised which I would imagine Emyr could get if you’re not a member. Most of the rooms are pretty small but room 215 is a good choice,

    • Rob says:

Thanks. Keen to try this. Hyatt is doing triple points for late July-Sep so, put together with the £100 credit, makes this very interesting as it will also apply to SLH bookings made via hyatt.com (which are the same price as slh.com if you don’t want to prepay).

      • Hbommie says:

Breakfast was good, didn’t try the Brasserie but I’d really recommend the Greene Oak at Oakley Green for Sunday lunch ‘‘twas excellent.

  • Rhys says:

Question for the hive mind: does anyone have any experience with renting out a driveway with Parklet/Just Park/ Your Parking Space?

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

(Random but) I spoke to the vicar of a church that did rented out there car park on match days, they had no complaints

      • Ed says:

I’ve rented spaces from a church near Chelsea and Westminster hospital before, worked well.

    • TGLoyalty says:

      I’ve rented out spaces before.

Can’t say I have ever had an issue as a customer so can’t believe their are many as a seller as long as you’re not anal about things.

    • Mark says:

We used to rent our se London drive spot on just park. Good service overall, although take up was so low (we live by a station but have some free parking on the road) that we stopped checking the account and had random cars park on our drive every few months!

      • chabuddy geezy says:

I rent mine through your parking space, much better than just park.

    • Simon says:

Yes — I rent two spaces out near Shoreditch via Parklet. Excellent so far, especially if you later need to re-let, whereupon they do all the donkey work.

  • Scallder says:

Received an email from Creation with some changes to terms, which includes:

    “Accounts in credit
We’ve added new wording to explain that you must not pay us more than you owe on your account. See 7.7 for details.”

“7.7 You must not pay us more than you owe when you make payments to your Account or transfer funds from another credit or store Card if this creates a credit balance on your Account. If ever there is a credit balance on your Account we may apply it to any recent transactions not yet shown on your Account or to transactions made after the date your Account goes into credit. We may also return any credit balance to the Account from which the money has been sent. We do not pay Interest on any credit balance or take them into account for the purpose of any reward scheme.”

So I guess people going in to credit balance to fund Che could be getting caught out

    • SwissJim says:

I guess if this is a change they need to give cardholders 45 days notice. But it doesn’t fundamentally change anything. Rather than going into credit to ensure 0 interest, just pay same day as topping up Che (may still work i.e. 0 interest, may go into credit – someone will be able to advise, not sure when the top up & credit post) or immediately you see the charge posting to clear it (and pay pennies therefore interest…).

      • thehornets says:

Suspect you’ll end up with a small interest payment covering the 3 or 4 days between topping up Che and the payment actually hitting your account.

    • Anna says:

That’s quite annoying. I wouldn’t put my account in credit if they didn’t charge interest on certain transactions!
In reality their IT is so flaky I wonder if they’ll even notice.

    • BP says:

I frequently was putting mine £10k in credit but would quickly spend the excess.

    • Reney says:

Sounds like you can still top up and pay it off right away. because they will apply to transaction not yet posted.

    • Andrew says:

Depends on how they implement it. I’ve found that John Lewis Financial Services (HSBC) reject faster payments if it exceeds the statement balance.

    • Chrisasaurus says:

I believe this is purely because they’re not a bank and aren’t allowed to hold balances by regulation.

  • LS says:

    HSBC premier question:
Has anyone got in trouble or got their account downgraded for not paying their salary in to their account? I don’t really want to go through the faff…

    • Lula says:

I’ve had the premier account for a while, and have just transferred my salary from another account each month. No problems at all.

    • Norm says:

I don’t pay my salary into it, just the minimum for the benefits, and it hasn’t been downgraded in over 3 years. You’ll be fine.

    • mutley says:

I get paid into Barclays Premier, and then transfer threequarters into HSBC each month. Ensuring I get the benefits of both accounts. To answer the question though, I’m sure that even if it’s not a salary transfer a decent throughflow of funds from wherever will see you right.

      • BuildBackBetter says:

Hasn’t Barclays closed some accounts for this?

        • Doug M says:

It’s been said in comments. But I always wonder if you have the whole story with many things like this.

    • BP says:

My salary gets paid to Prem and transferred out same day. No problem with this. I do think they expect to see your salary coming into the account.

    • Chris K says:

I was asked to promise to pay my salary into it after they opened it. I duly did so for 3 months, my job finished and then I had no salary for a while. Nothing happened. Currently have my salary go into another account, still nothing has happened.

I qualified by savings rather than annual income so it may be different.

The only time I’ve had any contact from them was about using my £500 free overdraft for too long. So I stopped doing that.

      • Reney says:

I was told when I opened my account that I would get a 6 month warning of I fell below one of the criteria so I will have time to rectify it. If what they said is true, you will get a warning in advance.

EU Set to Lift Travel Curbs for U.S. Residents This Week

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-06-15/eu-set-to-lift-travel-curbs-for-u-s-residents-this-week-kpxnj53y

    • Anna says:

Not much use to the EU though unless the US reciprocates!

      • BuildBackBetter says:

Why? Huge numbers of US citizens waiting to travel abroad. Portugal trying to offset drop in demand from uk.

        • Anna says:

There’s been nothing stopping them travelling abroad for months. EU still carries a warning re travel from the US. How many Americans holiday in Portugal anyway?

        • meta says:

Americans are already descending on all European hotspots or have booked it for July/August/September/October. My friend who owns Airbnbs in Croatia and Greece is fully booked till end of October, mainly Americans and Germans. Both countries already accepting vaccinated tourists without restrictions.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Finally US citizens might leave the USA for once!

  • George K says:

Test & Trace experiences…. Have had a phonecall every day so far AND a house visit (but they asked for my wife) after all of us returning from amber-list country. Do they carry on doing this for the duration of the 10-day period? Got no issue with it, but surprised that it’s been so full-on.

Also: Is it possible to opt in TTR if you didn’t book it in advance?

    • Yolo says:

What time of the day are they calling you and visiting?

      • Freddy says:

I’d do everyone a favour and not answer the phone. You don’t want to speak to them and they ain’t really bothered about speaking to you either

      • George K says:

Calls started early morning, moved to early afternoon. Visitor came around 4.30pm.

    • Anna says:

I suspect they’ll have to spread themselves a bit more thinly in July and August. Someone else was having a similar experience much earlier on today’s chat thread.

    • Triath5 says:

Which city are you based in? I’d suspect London if they paid you a visit – can’t imagine them doing this any slightly more remote places.
