The HfP chat thread – Monday 14th June

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Yes – took the subscription with Avios bous on the 8th June and had the credit post on the 12th.
At the time when I took out the subscription it seemed like it would not stack (Avios + Amex Offer), but eventually did 🙂

  • Ja says:

If I have a couple of credit cards that I don’t use, should I close them or keep them. I’m asking with regard to what it does for your credit rating

    Thanks

    • Rob says:

You keep your longest held card open, because longevity with one institution is seen as a good thing on your credit file.

In terms of benefits, most long-term HfP readers will regret cancelling a card which is no longer available to new cardholders, only to find that it is now far better than any other card on the market. My old Marriott and IHG Premium Mastercards fall into this category.

      • Mr(s) Entitled says:

        I miss you Hilton CC!

      • Chris Heyes says:

Rob Yes I agree Credit Cards get worse not better as years pass, but another problem is you can keep the Card not just Credit Cards Tesco Clubcard comes to mind Grandfathered rate but withdrawn even for existing holders

  • Lloyd Buck says:

Wondering if anyone else is unable to log in to Heathrow Rewards at the moment? For a couple of weeks I’ve been getting an error saying that ‘the service is temporarily unavailable…we are working to resolve this…check back soon’.

    • Rob says:

Yes, has been down for a while. App still shows your balance.

    • Joints&Piles says:

Been down for at least 6 weeks now. Much longer and my points will expire before I get chance to transfer out. Not impressed.

  • Waddle says:

Got an email from VS saying my vouchers have been extended.

  • Ste C says:

Just had an email from Virgin saying they are extending my vouchers again:

“we want to give you peace of mind by further extending your Flying Club vouchers, giving you a full 18 months extention in total. As before, all these changes will be applied to your account automatically, there is no need to do anything or contact us. ”

I cant remember how long they were extended for in the past though so not 100% sure as to when they now expire.

    • WaynedP says:

Around 20th August last year, they were extended “by a further 6 months, giving a full year extension in total” for everybody, I believe.

3 weeks ago, I got an email advising a 3 month extension to Tier Status, and “further extension to vouchers, giving a full 18 months extension in total.”

I wasn’t sure if that was for everybody, or targetted at me because I had just triggered another voucher.

    • TripRep says:

Got the same email from VS extending vouchers for a further 18 months

Let’s hope BA follow suit in the next few days.

  • Josh says:

Does anyone know if BA cancel your flight, which was booked on a 2-4-1 during their avios sale, will the voucher be reinstated? Been on hold now for 1 hour and I’m losing the will to live

    • Rob says:

      If still in date, yes.

    • pauldb says:

But do you really want that: when does your voucher expire? You can check under Manage My Account -> eVouchers. No point getting back an expired voucher.

You may be able to push back a 50% off booking but BA don’t make it easy.

    • Anna says:

If BA has cancelled your flight you should be able to get a refund online via MMB. You will only get the avios you paid back though, so you might want to try moving the dates instead. If this isn’t an option, a FTV will extend your 241 until April 2023 if it’s due to expire before you can use it.

  • Mark says:

Bendy (Solihull) to premium bonds – has it stopped working?

    • Magarathea says:

Tried yesterday and it failed but tried again today and it went through fine.

      • Mark says:

Hmm thanks. Will try again. Curve app shows that it has gone through but not the case really.

As authorisation of your debit card was declined you may wish to contact your card issuer.

        • Mark says:

Also showing as ‘pending’ on my Creation app. Not sure how that will affect my CC limits if I try again tomorrow and it goes through.

    • Aston100 says:

Worked for me over the weekend.

  • KS says:

Anyone able to try out the Amex FHR prepaid booking and whether it credits towards hotel nights? I suspect not, but looking for a confirmation either way before I make a few bookings.

    • TGLoyalty says:

They are booked via Expedia so it is almost certain they won’t.

      • KS says:

Thanks, I agree. Just tried booking a stay and got this line on checkout page: “Please note, most hotel loyalty programmes cannot be used on a prepaid, third party booking.”
