We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Curve question…

Is it permitted to pay your company’s VAT bill using Curve or only personal HMRC bills?

    • Ian M says:

Just to clarify, I mean do Curve permit you to use your Curve card to pay VAT bills for your company ltd company?

    • John says:

yes, I pay my company’s VAT & CT bills using Curve, then reimburse myself

      • Ian M says:

Do you settle the credit card bill directly from your company’s account or from your personal?

        • KBuffett says:

Do not do this. People will say they’ve never had an issue. But if you are ever investigated (small chance) and it picked up, it will be an issue. Use personal funds to personal credit card bill. Claim back as an expense from your company.

    • Memesweeper says:

      Check with your accountant.

I pay mine by using curve creatively, both cards personal, and adjust my director’s loan accordingly.

      • Freddy says:

I was thinking of getting the Capital On Tap business card with curve to pay CT and VAT. Would that work?

  • Yuff says:

Anyone know the process if one of the government test providers does not return the results to the tests?

    • Sam G says:

I read of someone waiting on a day 8 test to end isolation and the call handlers calling and checking they were isolating sent them a NHS one instead

    • AndyW says:

Really depends what test. If it’s a day 2 or day 8, email them, and carry on with life as long as you have done what you are supposed to do would be my view (and of course don’t have any symptoms etc)

      • Yuff says:

Plenty of emails, some response but no results.
I wanted to book my wife and daughter an in person TTR yesterday with same day results but don’t know if that’s possible.
But RT diagnostics have shocking reviews so not expecting anything from them and it is impossible to contact them by phone.

        • Yuff says:

Sorry it was a day 2 on Tuesday

          • Yuff says:

Just read the government website it doesn’t say anything about needing a negative day 2 result to book the TTR

    • Tracey says:

Phone 119. If day 2 is sufficiently late they may send you an NHS PCR test as a substitute.

      • Yuff says:

        Tracey

        You are a ⭐️
it is impossible to talk to anyone about this except 119, who said no problem just drive straight there and back

    • Aaron C says:

My understanding is that all you have to do is send off the test and when the result comes isn’t your problem. For example when I came back from Portugal last month the day 2 test wasn’t resulted for nearly a week (it was negative).

It shows what nonsense this is since I’d have been spreading it around for a week if I’d been positive. If they were serious they’d be using the NHS labs which are properly equipped and not these tinpot private labs.

      • Rob says:

It’s not clear you even need to take it – just buy it. Anyone reckon there is a check on which tests are returned?

  • SteveJ says:

Probably obvious question. The bonus c.back awarded on the platinum c.back card for adding a supplementary card holder, does that post as a statement credit the next month, or is it part of the c.back balance that only becomes payable once annually?

  • Chrisasaurus says:

VS Rewards+ Upgrade question – is this a phone call to redeem?

I am planning an upgrade to UC on a flight to JFK, my thought was to pay cash for premium and upgrade that, is collective wisdom the same?

    • Gary says:

Yes, booking that involves an upgrade redemption/ voucher requires a phone call.

  • Bill says:

    Stobart have appointed liquidators

    • Chrisasaurus says:

Telegraph article at the weekend had the lead in paragraph:

“Police have been alerted to potential irregularities in relation to the planned acquisition of Stobart Air and Carlisle Lake District Airport by a bitcoin investor based on the Isle of Man….”

Is it safe to hit the Amex Platinum spend target by booking a refundable hotel of 3k for Dec 2021 to be eligible for the 50k points. In no rush to cancel the hotel booking before Amex recognises. Else i need to buy Aldi gift cards and other options.
I have paid council tax and all other utilities till next March.

    • Ian M says:

I’ve booked a fully refundable hotel before on an Amex. Received the points and bonus, paid the bill. Then closed the account a month or so later. Then after the account was closed I’ve cancelled the hotel booking. Then called Amex a week later and they’ve offered to refund to my bank, but I opted to have the credit applied to one of my other Amex cards.

Personally I wouldn’t do something like that again as I’m in it for the long haul and want a good healthy long term relationship with Amex, so wouldn’t want to do anything that risks that. But I had no issues with it at the time.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Bonus will be clawed back with the refund. Whenever that is. So unless you transfer out and cancel card or you spend £3k elsewhere is the 3 month period they’ll be lost.

Has anyone stayed in DoubleTree by Hilton London Kensington, what has experience been, toying between here and Hilton Hyde Park

    • Andrew says:

There was a discussion on here about Hilton Hyde Park yesterday evening – see page 7 of yesterday’s chat: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2021/06/11/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-11th-june/

    • IanM says:

I think it’s okay if a little tired although haven’t stayed in 18 months. Nice and close to Shepherds Bush Underground and Westfield for shopping.

I stayed at Hilton Angel yesterday and it’s pretty much back to almost normal – Exec Lounge open and buffet-ish breakfast. Very good prices as well and decent access to Northern Line underground. Nicer rooms than Kensington.

      • GERRY says:

I looked at Angel, didnt realise it had exec lounge, may check that one out, beats sitting in room working on an eve

        • IanM says:

It’s a step up from Kensington in quality and much closer to the City, I got a deal for £80 a night over 3 nights. Exec drinks in bar rather than lounge as they are short staffed and still not too busy with guests. But lounge still open for coffee and soft drinks. It was 100% better than IC at Park Lane which was totally dead!
Nice terrace outside where you can sit and have a drink.

    • Lou says:

I have nothing but great things to say about DT Greenwich. The staff are absolutely amazing, nothing is too much trouble. The building itself is gorgeous

    • Yvo says:

Ah…I missed yesterday’s Hilton Hyde Park chat, I’ve been staying once a week because I volunteer at the Marble Arch vaccination centre and it gets me closer to Platinum. Plus it was legal to do so during lockdown.
Always upgraded as gold, rooms at the back don’t get the Hyde Park view but are quieter if that matters to you.

      • Rob says:

I know both hotels – I live around the corner from the DT and I did a LOT of day room bookings last year at Hilton HP. The DT is in FAR better internal condition, having been redone 4-5 years ago, has a HUGE private garden and has these cute domes you can eat in. Literally opposite Gloucester Road tube for District / Picc / Circle lines.

Hilton is obviously walkable to Selfridges and you get the park views. Rooms are dated in my view but servicable.

DT has a lounge if you are Hilton Diamond and is the all-round better hotel unless location swings it for HP.

  • Reney says:

DT are you around? Yesterday you suggested that Amazon CC could be used to pay Virgin CC, I wanted to check there was no fees (cash transaction or interest) and how do amazon rewards get paid out? Do they drop it directly into your account or email you a gift card that you can applied to any accounts? Thx

    • DT says:

No fees on the Amazon card, you need to link it to your Amazon account when you sign up, there’s usually a small sign up bonus as well. Every £4000 you spend you get £10 Amazon credit dropped into you Amazon account at the end of your statement period. The earning rate is incredibly poor but when it’s free credit it feels better!

      • Reney says:

Ok will apply for one today. The stack suggested looks like would work very well.

        • lumma says:

It’s a decent return if you’re a prime member and make purchases on Amazon with it.

My parents like to make lots of purchases using my account for free delivery so I get a decent return!

        • DT says:

If you have Prime it’s 3 points per £2 spent on Amazon which makes the earning rate better, not sure what the earning rate on Amazon is without Prime, outside of Amazon it’s 0.5 points per £2.

When I signed up I think I got £20 SUB in the form of Amazon credit. Though they started me with a ridiculously low credit limit of £1500, took 6 months before I could increase it

          • Reney says:

I stopped prime recently, not buying enough, don’t need one day delivery so local locker serves my need. Mainly interested for the stacking opportunity.

          • lumma says:

It’s 0.75% back at Amazon if not Prime. £30 sign up bonus currently too. I started off with £1000 limit, got increased to £2k a few months later but no more since

          • Reney says:

I got a much bigger limit than those indicated here. Not sure if it is due to income or credit records?!

          • 747_Brat says:

@DT Do you need a Metal bendy for Amazon card or can it work without one?

          • DT says:

@747, no it doesn’t require Curve at all, I think you can go Virgin (Curve) -> Amazon -> IHG -> Revolut -> Amex if you prefer. Though I tried this so long ago that I can’t remember if it worked or not

          • Yorkie Aid says:

DT… So effectively Virgin must think the Amazon card is a debit card I assume? Just to be certain is this is the card issued by Newday? Thank you.

          • 747_Brat says:

            Thanks DT

      • Bobri says:

Wort trying to pay Seagulls with it?

        • DT says:

Earning rate is too poor for it to be your main MS card paying off Amex, use it as the back end of your stack to pay off whatever card you already use to pay Amex
